2009 SEASON PREVIEW

The 2009 version of the Nanaimo Premier Pirates will have an “old school” feel to the program this year. Former Premier Pirate, Pete Entwistle takes over as head coach this year and will be joined with another former Pirate player and coach Mike Rogers. The coaching staff will be rounded out with Parksville Royals alumni Justin Millward, and Daryl Robson.

A strong class of senior's will reunite with a strong group of first year players and will define what Premier Pirates Baseball is all about.  They are a hard working group with a lot of grit and passion for the game. Team chemistry couldn't be better as players play for each other and pick each other up. There is a lot of skill and opportunities for this group to develop into clutch players. We have a smaller roster this year which will lead to a lot more playing time for some players.

As a coaching staff we are looking forward to watching the team and players develop into complete baseball players. We truly have some "Difference Makers" on the team; they have the ability to change an outcome of a game in a single opportunity.  We are a team that will leave it all out on the field and get after it every game.

Pitching

On the mound the Pirates will welcome back Steven McKinnon, Cody Chartrand, and Darren Kolk. Both McKinnon and Chartrand will continue to build on strong seasons last year, while Kolk will be looked upon to increase in his innings on the mound this year. Derek Garrow a Ladysmith product has looked impressive this spring. Garrow is a welcomed addition who has looked right at home in the Pirates Program. Jordan Clarkson comes to the senior squad this year after being named the Junior Pirates Top Pitcher in 2008. Jordan Kornberger and Jay Huggins have look strong on the mound and will see some valuable innings out of the bullpens this year.

Corner Infield

Jay Huggins will be making the change from 1st base last season to 3rd this season. Jay shows great patients at the plate and will look to improve upon his hit total of last season. Cody Andreychuk, Steve McKinnon, and Cody Chartrand will share time at 1st base and the DH spot this year. McKinnon is one of the top athletes in the province, while Chartrand will provide excellent leadership. Andreychuk who has worked hard in the gym during the off season will build upon his strong finish at the plate during the 2008 season.

Middle Infield

Jordan Romine will be our starting shortstop this year. His speed and athleticism is a great asset up the middle. The coaching staff will be looking for him to develop as a leader on the infield. Curt Schulenberg, Jordan Rogers and Shayne Kelly will be battling it out for the starting spot at 2nd base. All three are great players and it will be fun to watch them battle it out for the starting spot.

Outfield

Blake Robson, Darren Kolk, Shayne Kelly and Jordan Kornberger will be patrolling the outfield this year. Robson will look to spark the offense at the leadoff spot, and has the opportunity to change the game in the field with his ability to track down a fly ball. Kolk and Kelly will be solid hitters in the middle of the Pirates order, while Jordan Kornberger has looked impressive this spring playing multiple positions.

Catching

The Premier Pirates are once again strong behind the plate with Jordan Rogers and Jordan Kornberger. Both will have runners on there toes as both like to show off thier arms. Rogers and Kornberger will be pushing each other to become better the entire season.

The 2009 Premier Pirates are a tight group of competitive players. This group has been together for a long time and will look to finish there final season together strong.

 CONGRATULATIONS BRYAN DUMESNIL

World Baseball Classic adds Nanaimo Premier Pirate Alumni

www.tsn.ca

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The stellar pitching staff that might have been was long ago pushed out of the equation for the Canadian national team, leaving manager Ernie Whitt to squeeze all he can from the unsung staff that is at the World Baseball Classic.

Ace Scott Richmond, a hopeful with the Toronto Blue Jays, and reliever Jesse Crain, a key setup man for the Minnesota Twins, headline a list of 13 arms filled with already-weres and yet-to-bes named to the final 28-man roster unveiled Tuesday.

Minus the injured Jeff Francis, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard, and without Ryan Dempster and Eric Gagne who declined to play, an area that might have been a strength for Canada in the 16-country tournament instead looks like a liability.

"We know some of our pitchers are lacking experience but they're not lacking capability," Whitt said on a conference call. "How are they going to perform on the big stage?

"Only time will tell."

The Canadians can only hope the pitchers give the offence an honest chance to outslug opponents. With Justin Morneau, Jason Bay, Russ Martin, Joey Votto, Matt Stairs and Mark Teahen leading the lineup, scoring runs shouldn't be an issue.

"We're hoping our offence will carry our team," said Whitt.

Joining Richmond and Crain on the staff are: veteran national team stalwarts Chris Begg, Mike Johnson and Steve Green; Dave Davidson, part of Canada's Olympic team in Beijing; Vince Perkins, who pitched in the 2006 Classic; and prospects Phillippe Aumont, Scott Diamond, Christopher Leroux, Bryan Dumesnil, T.J. Burton and Brooks McNiven.

Who pitches when remains undecided, according to Whitt.

The national team hosts Pool C at Rogers Centre and opens play March 7 versus the United States. Does Whitt load up his pitchers for a chance to take the down the Americans in a repeat of the thrilling 8-6 win at the 2006 Classic, or does he save the big guns for an elimination game later on?

Venezuela and Italy are also in Pool C and meet March 7, too. The two winners play for a spot in the second round while the two losers clash to avoid elimination. Another match follows between the loser of the winners game and the winner of the losers game to determine the second team that advances.

The Americans and Venezuelans are both fairly stacked, while the Italians are the pool's minnow. Trying to map it out is no simple task.

"We really haven't had a formal decision on how we're going to align our pitching staff," said Whitt. "It's really a roll of the dice."

Aumont, selected 11th overall by the Seattle Mariners in 2007, is intriguing because he may have the best raw stuff on the team. But he's just 20 and comes with tight restrictions on his usage due to lingering elbow soreness from last season.

He can only throw 25 pitches or one inning in his first outing.

At least Canada has a lineup capable of doing the heavy lifting.

Morneau will start at first; Pete Orr and Stubby Clapp will share duties at second; Chris Barnwell is the shortstop; Teahen is the third baseman with Shawn Bowman and Corey Koskie, recovered enough from his concussion issues, backing him up; Martin will handle the catching duties with Luke Carlin and Brett Lawrie, picked 17th overall by Milwaukee last year, behind him; and Bay, Stairs, Adam Stern and Nick Weglarz will play the outfield.

Votto, a first baseman, will likely DH but could end up in left field.

Whitt said he's been kicking around several batting orders and plans to use the team's training camp starting Monday in Dunedin, Fla., to make decisions. Canada also has exhibition games against Toronto, Philadelphia and the Yankees in which to experiment.

"Everything is in pencil right now," said Whitt. "I want to see who's swinging the bat well.

"The bottom line is to win."

Whitt also floated the idea of Teahen playing second, something he's experimenting with at Kansas City Royals camp. Should Koskie show signs of being able to play every day, that may become a viable option.

But Koskie, who hasn't played since July 5, 2006 when he fell on his head chasing a fly ball with the Brewers, would have to show that he's capable of handling that type of activity. He was initially added to the roster simply to be a bat off the bench.

"He's going to get some at-bats (in the exhibition games)," said Whitt. "I really want to see how he's swinging the bat."

University of Evansville http://www.gopurpleaces.com/news/2009/2/21/BB_0221093637.aspx?path=baseball

Johnson City, Tenn. – The University of Evansville Purple Aces baseball team scored five runs in the top of the third inning, but could not hold off a ninth inning rally by the host East Tennessee State University Buccaneers on Saturday, falling by a score of 9-8 at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tennessee.

East Tennessee opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by Paul Hoilman.  The lead would not last long, as the Aces would explode for five runs in the top of the third.  After Jim Viscomi doubled to right field, Viscomi proceeded to steal third base and home to notch Evansville’s first run of the game.  The Aces used the long ball to score the remaining four runs in the inning, on a three run home run by Cody Fick and a solo shot by Greg Wallace, to increase the lead to 5-1.

After ETSU closed the gap to 5-3 by scoring a run in both the third and fourth innings, Alex Acheson smashed a triple to left field to score Tom Heithoff to widen to lead to 6-3.

The Aces surrendered home runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, as Ben Allen would launch a two-run shot in the sixth and Bo Reeder would send a solo shot out of the park in the seventh to put ETSU up 7-6.

Down by one run entering the ninth, Evansville rallied for two runs.  After Acheson and Viscomi hit back-to-back singles, Andy Smith would knock in Acheson on an RBI groundout.  Andy Pascoe would follow with a single up the middle to knock in Viscomi, putting the Aces on top 8-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Bucs tied the game in the ninth, scoring their first run on a double play groundout and the game winner four batters later on a bases loaded walk.

“We competed well again today,” said UE head coach Wes Carroll.  “I thought that we did a good job of executing at the plate, and guys really battled hard and I liked the energy and enthusiasm that the team played with.

“We still need to learn how to win though.  The good thing is though is that it is early, and if we continue to play with the same type of energy and enthusiasm that we did today, the wins will come.  I am sure of it.”

Evansville (0-2) and East Tennessee (2-0) will conclude their series Sunday.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

UBC Thunderbirds http://www.gothunderbirds.ca/sports_team_story.asp?id=2&storyid=3059

OAKLAND - The UBC Thunderbirds (8-1, 4-0) completed the four game sweep of Patten College today with wins of 4-1 and 3-2 in a double header on the opening weekend of NAIA regular season play.

"Overall, it was a bad day for our offense with only 12 hits in 16 innings but two wins is the key," said UBC head coach Terry McKaig who saw his T-Birds put up 18 runs yesterday in a pair of games against Patten. "Pitching and defense dominated the weekend and we only gave up five runs in four games."

Earning the win in the front half of the double header was Taylor King who went four and two-third innings, giving up just one run and five hits while striking out two. Eric Brown got the unconventional save, pitching two and one-third innings as he gave up no runs and no hits.

The T-Birds had an equally impressive performance from their pitchers in game two with rookie Danny Britton-Foster getting the win in his first NAIA start. The Ladysmith, BC native went six strong with four strikeouts while giving up just a single run and four hits. Shawn Hetherington got the save throwing a scoreless ninth inning after Josh Brink pitched two innings giving up one run.

Nic Lendvoy provided the majority of the T-Bird offence today, notching four RBIs, including three in the first game as he hit a two-run homer to pace UBC to victory.

Ryan Pilgrim was also solid at the plate, especially in game two, as he went 2-for-4, with two RBIs and a double.

The offence may have stalled a bit today but McKaig kept the 'Birds aggressive on the base paths, with UBC notching 12 stolen bases on the day.

UBC moves to 4-0 in the regular season and continues NAIA play next weekend on the road, taking on Concordia in Portland.

The T-Birds fell behind early, giving up three runs in the first inning, and were unable to make up the difference late in the game. UBC scored a single run in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but their comeback effort ended when Nic Lendvoy hit into a game ending double play.

Jon Syrnyk had pulled the T-Birds to within one with a single in the top of the ninth that cashed in Sammie Starr from second.

FPU brought in Brian Oliver to face Ryan Pilgrim who singled up the middle to move Syrnyk to second but the Sunbird reliever got out of the jam with the Lendvoy double play ball.

Both Syrnyk and Pllgrim finished the day with a pair of hits, as the T-Birds had seven on the afternoon. Bob Foerster and Starr had the other UBC RBIs.

Eric Brown got the start for the T-Birds and went five strong with four hits and five strikeouts while giving up four runs, but only one earned.

Taylor King and rookie Dan Britton-Foster combined to give up just one hit in relief and picked up three strikeouts.

Matt Mazzoni picked up the win for FPU, even though he gave up the Syrynk RBI in the top of the ninth.

Fresno Pacific notched eight hits with Case Rigby getting a team-high three.

UBC continues their California swing tomorrow with a match-up against Concordia-Irvine at 2:00 p.m.

Canada close to finalizing roster for WBC

By Shi Davidi, THE CANADIAN PRESS

Canada has only a few more decisions left to make ahead of the Feb. 22 deadline for participating countries to submit their final 28-man World Baseball Classic rosters.

It is believed the national team staff has settled and secured the necessary approvals for 13 pitchers and 13 position players, with final choices on one more of each still remaining. Many of the position players have been obvious all along.

Likely to be named to the Canadian squad when all 16 teams are officially unveiled Feb. 24 are: catchers Russ Martin and Luke Carlin; infielders Justin Morneau, Joey Votto, Stubby Clapp, Pete Orr, Chris Barnwell and Shawn Bowman; and outfielders Jason Bay, Matt Stairs, Mark Teahen, Adam Stern and Nick Weglarz.

Piecing together the pitching staff has been a much tougher challenge for Canadian officials, especially after injuries forced Rich Harden and Jeff Francis to the sidelines while Ryan Dempster opted against playing.

Scott Richmond is the de facto ace, Eric Gagne and Jesse Crain will anchor the bullpen, while national team mainstays Chris Begg, Mike Johnson and Steve Green are back for another go.

Others said to be joining them include: Dave Davidson, part of Canada's Olympic team in Beijing; Vince Perkins, who pitched in the 2006 Classic; and prospects Scott Diamond; Christopher Leroux; Bryan Dumensil; T.J. Burton; and Blake Hawksworth.

Meanwhile, the Canadians got some good news from recent reports that New York Mets ace Johan Santana likely won't suit up for Venezuela at the Classic.

Canada will host Pool C in Toronto and compete against the United States, Venezuela and Italy and its predominantly left-handed lineup might have had to face the left-handed Santana in an elimination game.

The Canadians begin play March 7 with an afternoon tilt versus the United States, while Venezuela takes on Italy that evening.

Play continues under a double-knockout format, with the first two teams to two losses going home.
