Nate Went 3 for 8 and a walk in the 15 inning marathon game against the Brownton Bruins. Nate had a clutch bottom of the ninth 2 out single that scored two runs to keep the game alive for the Blazers. The blazers had a runner at 2nd every inning of extra play but were unable to get a clutch hit, spoiling the relief efforts of AJ Rasmussen and Nic Haller, who combined for 8 straight scoreless, and Nate Hallers heroics at the plate.

Well the much anticipated opening weekend finally came, two weeks late. It turned out to be a dissapointing weekend as far as the Win-Loss column goes for the Blazers, but ultimately showed promise for this very young 2011 season. Had it not been for 3 rainouts in the last two weeks, the Blazers most likely would not of even played on Saturday against Cologne. But, it was decided to gut it out even though conditions were not good. Both teams battled, but ultimately it was a ugly game. Cologne capatilized on a few fielding errors early in the game and took a 4-0 lead. Mayer bounce right back with 5 runs without an out recorded, capped off by a towering homerun by Mike Roth. That is when Nic Haller left the mound, having turned in a quality 1 earned run start in 6 innings of work. This dd not go as well for the relief. Luke Buttenhof and Koty Hensel combined with the Cologne pitching had control issues, delivering walk after walk. It went from ugly to worse as the Hollanders eventually slipped away with a 15-9 victory. New players, Mike Roth and Brett Skoog, fit nicely into the line-up and the Blazers look to be able to but out their best offensive line-up in years. Sunday produced much better weather, but not better results. The Blazers were missing a few key players due to school, but remained close through 6 innings of baseball. Jeff Appel struggled early, but eventually found the groove and kept the Blazers in the game. Just as Saturday the Blazers appeared to be a 7 inning team playing a 9 inning game. Late inning walks and timely hitting led to the Blazers demise against Glencoe. Glencoe's bid for revenge was granted as they bounced back from a two game losing streak against the Blazers to ten run them in 8 innings. Although the Blazers walked away with an 0-2 record, there was a lot of positives. The Blazers will still have to find a way to get 9 solid innings on the mound, but their offense looks primed to support any decent pitching effort.
Welcome players, fans, coaches, and people who were googling to find a sports coat made by some dude with the last name Mayer. I hope this article does not fall on deaf ears because it looks to be in the running’s to win the Pulitzer. This is the Season Preview edition for the 2011 season. In this you will find predictions, developments, expectations, and ripping of players and coaches in general. There are many questions that arise when discussing the upcoming season for the Blazers. The obvious ones are of course: Will the Blazers find more pitching this year? Is this the year that some of the younger players hit their peak? How does the addition of Waconia affect the strength of the league? Can the Blazers improve on the 4 win mark? Is just another year with a core group all the Blazers needed to put it all together? With these questions come answers that vary in many ways. But, these are the obvious questions. I am here to give you the in-depth preview so let bring up some of the other questions that come up when you think Mayer Blazer Baseball: Nelly and Jeff "The Big" Appel both were blessed with the birth of a child, will their wives let them play a full season? Will they have some extra weight still left over from the pregnancy? Will Drew continue his streak of infield singles? Or will he finally lose a step off that 8.86s 40 time? What will he wear to batting practice? What time will he get to batting practice? Rumors have it, Nate has been playing a lot of basketball to get in shape, I even here he is in the Xbox live leader boards, will it pay off? He claims "this year" is "the year" that he puts it all together and vastly improves his Ball: Strike ratio on the mound, is it? 3 key players went on to have their first year of college. Did they get a Freshmen 15? Could Nate quick go do freshmen year 5 times in the next month to gain 75 pounds to bring him up to a very solid 150? Aleks vows a move to the outfield. Will this pan out? Luke is coming off a solid first year. Will he have a sophomore hangover or can he stay hot at the plate? Nate drove Nic into a Tahoe. I know, bold strategy, but will it be just what Nic needs to get that fire in his eyes and bring the average back up after a career low? Blake is in his first year of med school. In the past his goal has been to get his batting average as high as his GPA. It being med school, is it a lofty enough goal? Let’s see..... 2.50 GPA = .250 BA. Yep, in fact we may need a more attainable goal, you know, to bring up the moral of this fella. Will Joe B. continue to get better with age? Is his kid old enough to join the club? Will Paul hit his weight? Will Chris remain a Blazer even though his address as well as his heart may be in Cologne? Will Coty's experience at the next level be a huge help? Will AJ continue his success out of the bullpen? When will he be at batting practice? Will Boyle return to bring a consistent presence behind the plate? Will new talent arrive at Hoese Field? Will Lucas Radde be available for any of the summer? Will Brady attempt to break Neil Willmsen's unofficial record of 5 base on hit batsmen record in a single game? Can Coach Haller stay off the field and in the dugout and coaches box? Will the addition of one game or possibly more force Coach Haller to lay off the umpires to ensure he does not go over the 2 game tossed limit? All these questions are what the true Blazer fan looks to answer. With these answers you would be much more able to predict how the Blazers will finish this year. With the return of the core group of players and possible additions it looks as though the Blazers fire will burn a little higher and further into the post season. The Blazers open the season in what hopes to be a battle of two teams on the rise when they host the Cologne Hollanders on May 1st at 2pm. Things look bright for these young men....and J.R., Joe, Nelly, and "The Big". Come out and support your Blazers as much as you can this season. Predictions and Potential are just that. What the Blazers promise to bring to the ball park every game is a group of Men working hard together towards a common goal. The motto of the season - "Under Construction - Building Championship". Go Blazers!
The Mayer Blazers took the first of a three game playoff series against the St. Boni Saints with a score of 7-3. Jeff Appel gave the Blazers a great showing on the mound going 6 strong innings giving up 3 runs. Luke Buttenhoff came in to finish the game by getting the final 9 outs without giving up any runs. Luke also had a big day at the plate with 3 hits, a 2B, and an RBI. St. Boni jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but Mayer battled back for 2 runs off a few St. Boni errors and a timely hit by Buttenhoff. The Saints responded with a 2 run blast from Ryan Bollinger to take a 3-2 lead. The Blazers weren't done yet however as they plated 4 runs in the 7th. Nate Haller scored on a base hit to right, followed by Blake Noennig advancing from first to home on 3 passed balls. Later in the inning Joe Berrios came through with a big 2 out, 2-run hit to give the Blazers a 6-3 lead. The bottom of the 7th is when it got interesting. A walk and a hit gave Boni runners on first and third with just one out. The Blazers intentionally walked Ryan Bollinger to load the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Fortunately Luke Buttenhoff got a ground ball to Nic Haller at SS, who teamed up with Aleks Strehlke for a huge inning ending 6-4-3 double play. It turned out to be the nail in the coffin and the Blazers went on to win 7-3. Next game Saturday in Mayer at 2 pm. Go Blazers!!!
The Mayer Blazers dropped one to Watertown Wednesday night by a score of 10-0. A few mental errors got the Blazers in trouble early, and Watertown never looked back. The blazers offense struggled against the Red Devils Ace, Justin Kohls scattering three hits by Nic Haller, Joe Berrios, and A.J. Rasmussen. Nic Haller started the game and went 4 innings. Brian Adams and Koty Hensel also saw time on the hill. Mayer looks to bounce back against Plato this Sunday at 2pm.
The Blazers wasted no time in taking care of the New Germany Dutchmen on Sunday. The Blazers started out by pushing across 3 runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a few walks along with hits by Bryan Adams, Nic Haller, Luke Buttenhoff, and Drew Rasmussen. The Blazers also got a run in the second inning off a Nic Haller single to score Bryan Adams, after Koty Hensel moved him to third on a single to right. It was the third inning that Bryan Adams and the Blazers let up their only run. Bryan Adams continued his brilliance on the mound getting the complete game win, allowing just the run in the 3rd. Mayer scored another run in the 4th on another Nic Haller single to left. This put the score at 5-1 which is where it stayed till the 8th inning when Nic Haller delivered his third homerun of the year to right center making the score 6-1. The Blazers added 3 more in the ninth. Bryan Adams led the way on the hill for the Blazers pitching 9 innings allowing just 1 run. Nic Haller led the way for the Blazers at the plate going 5-6 with 6 RBI and a Homerun, only a triple short of the cycle.
Congratulations to the Mayer Lutheran High Scool baseball team, especially our very own Luke, Koty, and Aleks on placing 3rd at State! Mayer won their first game Thursday, lost to the eventual state champions Thursday night, then defeated Deer River 7-4 on Saturday to take third. Congrats on an excellent season!!!!
The Mayer Blazers barely put together a 9 man roster Wednesday night in a 17-1 7 inning loss. Unfortunately it was against one of the toughest teams in the Crow, Green Isle. In a game that saw only Joe Berrios in his regular fielding position, the Blazers struggled through 7 innings against the Irish. Chris Schwartz got the start and Joe pitched respectably in relief. The defense for the Blazers was interesting to say the least. John Haller (no, that's not a misprint) started the game at first base and it wasn't hard to tell that he's still got it. In his first game back from a hamstring injury, Blake solidified his new home at second base fielding every ball and turning a stellar double play with Nic. Nate caught the second half of the game and was a brick wall back there to say the least. Also, Nelly thought it would be a good idea to bring back the glory days as an all-star outfielder and played most of the game in CF. And at least everyone got a little enjoyment out of Paul playing right and Nate wearing catcher's gear. Hopefully we can get everyone back soon and get back to playing competitive baseball. At the plate, Nic had the lone RBI with a towering drive over the left field fence.
It was a rough 0-2 weekend for the Mayer Blazers as they dropped games to Cologne and Watertown, Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the boys in black fell behind early to the Hollanders and could never quite catch up. The Blazers battled tough through 8 innings and entered the 9th trailing 6-4. However, the wheels fell off in the 9th and thanks to a few too many walks, errors, and hits, the Hollanders put up 10 runs. The Blazers put up 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th, but the hole was just too big to dig out of and the final score was 16-6. Mayer was led on the mound by Nic Haller who worked through 8 innings throwing 160 pitches. The biggest bright spot was the hot bat of Luke Buttenhoff. Luke went 4-5 with 2 singles, a double, a HR, and 3 RBI!!
On Sunday the Red Devils of Watertown visited Mayer and found themselves in a pitcher's duel from the beginning. Watertown struck first and took a 1-0 lead, but Nate Haller got a clutch hit to tie the score up at 1-1. A few innings later Watertown got what proved to be the winning run and went ahead 2-1. The Blazers just couldn't get a timely 2 out hit in this one as they left the bases loaded twice and had 10 runners LOB. Just like Saturday, the Blazers played tough through 8 innings. But Mayer saw their 9th inning woes continue as they gave up 3 more runs to the Red Devils. Brian Adams threw a great game going 7 strong innings and giving up only 2 runs to one of the top teams in the North. At the plate, Nate Haller had the lone RBI.
Congrats to Koty, Luke, Aleks, and the rest of the Mayer Lutheran baseball team for advancing to the State baseball tournament! The Crusaders won back-to-back must win games Thursday afternoon over West Lutheran at Midway Stadium in St. Paul to advance to the next round. Game 1 was 6-4, and game 2 was 3-1. The Crusaders are now 2 wins away from playing at Target Field! Their next game will be Thursday at 12:00 in Chaska. Way to go guys! Keep it up!
The Mayer Blazers beat the Glencoe Brewers for the second time this year in stunning fashion. The Brewers took an early lead off newly acquired Blazers pitcher Jeff Appel, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd inning. The Blazers got 1 back in the 4th when Nic Haller was hit by a pitch to reach first. Nate Haller followed that up by ripping a double down the left field line, advancing Nic to third. Chris Schwartz followed that up with an RBI ground out. Jeff Appel kept the Brewers off balance for a few innings causing them to continuously pop up. Brewers got 2 more runs across the board in the 5th to make the score 5-1, which it stayed, till the 9th. The top of the 9th inning was a sight to see. Down 4 runs the Blazers drew 3 straight walks to bring the tying run to the plate with no one out. Following a pitching change the Blazers saw the next two batters record outs scoring only 1 run. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs and down 3 up comes Koty Hensel. Koty hit a grounder to 3rd base. The third baseman fielded the ball and proceeded to make a high throw over the first baseman bringing both runners into score and advanced Koty to second. Nic Haller was the next batter to the plate. With the tying run on second and two outs, the Brewers chose to intentionally walk Nic bringin Nate Haller to the plate. With a 2-2 count Nate struck out on a curveball in the dirt, but the ball got past the catcher and Nate reached first safely, advancing the tying run to 3rd (Koty), and the go ahead run to second (Nic). Chris Schwartz came to the plate next and worked his way to a full count. With a full count and the runners moving on the pitch, Chris blooped a single into left center bringing home Chris's 2nd and 3rd RBI's and giving the blazers a 1 run lead. Drew Rasmussen sealed the deal in the next at-bat with a two RBI single. Brian Adams then threw his 3rd consecutive scoreless inning in the Ninth to seal the deal for the Blazers. The win gives the Blazers a 2 game lead in third place of class C teams in the North Division. The Blazers next game is Saturday at Home against the Cologne Hollanders followed by a game @ Watertown on Sunday. Both games are at 2pm.
