AUSTIN, Texas -- Behind a strong defensive effort, triggered by junior forward Itiana Taylor (pictured), No. 10 state-ranked Pflugerville posted a 50-29 victory over Del Valle Monday night in the bi-district playoffs at the Delco Center in Austin. Taylor finished with team-highs of 11 points and seven rebounds and added a game-high five steals to lead the Panther attack on both ends of the floor.

The win moves Pflugerville to 27-6 overall and into the State Area round of the playoffs.  Pflugerville, ranked No. 10 in this week's Texas Association of Basketball Coaches/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine poll, will face  Spring Dekaney High School (32-4) in the Area round. That Area contest takes place on Thursday, Feb. 17 at James Earl Rudder High School in Bryan, Texas. A 7 p.m. tip is scheduled.

Dekaney is No. 12 in the 5A state TABC/Texas Preps rankings and won the 13-5A district title. The Wildcats beat Lufkin Monday night in their bi-district game.

Del Valle, which finished its season 20-12, employed stall tactics from its opening possession. The pressing Pflugerville defense, however, forced the Cardinals into 24 turnovers, including six in the first quarter where the Panthers outscored De Valle 11-4.

Pflugerville took a 25-12 lead into intermission behind five points apiece from Taylor, senior guard Curtiesha Woods and senior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi.  The Panthers dominated on the boards in the first half, out-rebounding the Cardinals 22-7. De Valle was held to a four-for-11 field goal shooting effort and made four free throws in the half.

In the third quarter, the Panthers closed out the period with a 5-0 run in the last minute to push its lead to 34-18. In the fourth period, Pflugerville completely put the game out of reach by rattling off eight unanswered points, triggered by three Taylor steals and two layups, for a 42-18 lead with 5:28 left.

Pflugerville finished the game with 12 steals, with both Taylor and Ebomwonyi collecting four apiece. Ebomwonyi finished with five points and had six rebounds. Senior forward Shoneice Yett (five points) also had six boards.

The Panthers dominated the boards, out-rebounding Del Valle 34-18.
