MANSFIELD, Texas -- The Pflugerville Panthers continue their winning ways at the Mansfield Spring Creek Barbeque Invitational Tournament, as head coach Nancy Walling's squad advanced to the championship game Saturday evening against Flower Mound Marcus. The championship game between Pflugerville (20-2) and Marcus (16-1) takes place at 8:15 p.m. The game will be streamed live via the internet by Premier Basketball Media (PBMtv). Pflugerville won their first four tourney games, including a 65-50 victory over No. 6 state-ranked Arlington Bowie in the Saturday afternoon semifinals while Marcus advanced to the title game with a 55-54 win over Mansfield Timberview in its semifinal contest.

The Panthers are ranked No. 7 in the Texas Girls Basketball Coaches 5A state poll and stand No. 16 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) poll. Marcus is No. 4 in the TABC weekly rankings. Bowie, now 13-2, holds the No. 6 spot in the TABC poll.

Pflugerville has had great success as of late at this annual 32-team tourney and is playing in the championship game for the third time in a row. P'ville did not play in last year's tourney as they participated in the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando, Florida which it won en route to its 2012 UIL State Tournament semifinal appearance. In 2012, the Panthers earned the Mansfield Invitational crown with a 54-51 victory over Mansfield Timberview; in 2011, the Panthers were Invitational runnerup.

Posted Dec 6/13 - Pflugerville Invitational Tournament news: Delayed start to Friday's games due to weather conditions

Due to icy conditions and school delays in the Central Texas Region, there will be a two-hour delay in starting the Friday, Dec. 6 competition at the Pflugerville Girls Basketball Invitational Tournament taking place at Pflugerville High School. Competition will begin at 10 am Friday morning, not 8 am as originally planned.

The three-day tournament features varsity, junior varsity and freshman tourney brackets. Play began on Thursday; pool play continues on Friday before moving into the championship rounds; on Saturday, the tournament concludes. All games are being played at Pflugerville High School's gymnasiums.

In the varsity tournament, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers improved to 11-2 with two victories in Thursday's pool play. The Panthers defeated Lake Travis (75-27) and a team from Austrailia, the South Australia County Red (66-47). On Friday, Pflugerville concludes pool play against Concordia Lutheran with an approximate start time of 2 pm, due to the weather delays.

The varsity tournament features eight teams. In addition to Pflugerville, Lake Travis, South Australia County Red and Concordia Lutheran, the other four squads include Round Rock Stony Point, Dallas Skyline, Pflugerville Connally and a second Australian team, South Australia County Blue.

STATE TOURNEY NOTES

THE STATE TOURNAMENT 5A FIELD: Pflugerville is making its sevent State Tournament appearance in program history. Three of those were prior to head coach Nancy Walling's tenure at PHS, and this is the fourth time her Panthers have advanced to the illustrious 5A "final four", with 2013 marking the third time in the last nine seasons.

Duncanville is the defending 5A champion and the undefeated Pantherettes (39-0) are ranked as high as No. 2 nationally. Pflugerville's semifinal opponent, Cibolo Steele, is a newer school. Cibolo Steele has now impressively advanced to the State Tournament for the fourth time in its seven-year school history.

Unbeaten teams at the 5A State Tournament are a rarity. Pflugerville and Duncanville (39-0) will enter the state tournament with unblemished records and both teams will be looking to become the first Class 5A programs since Rockwall in 2007 to finish the season with an undefeated record.

LIVE STREAM OF GAMES: The Pflugerville and Cibolo Steele game, along with the other State Tournament games, are being livestreamed by FOX Sports Southwest.
