Posted Nov 6/12 - Panthers open season with 71-33 victory over Connally
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas - Behind three double-figure scorers, the state-ranked Pflugerville girls basketball team opened the 2012-13 campaign with a 71-33 home victory over cross-town opponent Connally Tuesday night at the Panther Gym. It was the season opener for both teams.

The Panthers were led by senior forward Jonelle Smith who finished with 14 points while senior forwards Brenisha Payne (13 points) and Diana Omozee (11 points) also scored in double figures. Eleven of the 12 Panthers who took to the floor scored.

Omozee had team-highs of seven rebounds and four assists, while Payne finished with four steals.

Head coach Nancy Walling's Panthers are ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine preseason poll. P'ville led by eight after the first period (16-8) and extended its lead to 33-18 by halftime as the Panthers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half (14-for-28) while holding the Cougars to a seven-for-17 shooting effort.

The Panthers started hot in the third quarter with back-to-back layups by Smith in the first minute which pushed the lead to 42-18. P'ville led by 33 (57-24) after three quarters.

The Panthers have a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, Nov. 13 when it travels to Bryan, Texas to face A&M Consolidated. JV, Freshmen open with victories

The Pflugerville junior varsity opened its season with a 64-25 victory over the Connally JV while the Panther freshmen squad won its game, 65-28, over the visiting Cougars. Top Panther JV scorers were freshman guard Mykiel Burleson (18 points) and sophomore guard Alyssa Washington (16 points). The Pflugerville freshman team was paced by 16 points from Maykala Brathwaite while Delilah Mooney and Alasia Chester each finished with 15 points.
