Posted Feb 7/12 - Pflugerville closes out regular season undefeated (37-0) as it beats District opponent Leander 69-47 to set school record for most consecutive wins; awaits State 5A playoff pairings
LEANDER, Texas -- The No. 2 state-ranked Panthers used a 23-5 run in the final 6:40 of the game and forced nine turnovers in that stretch to close out the regular season undefeated with a 69-47 victory over District 16-5A opponent Leander Tuesday night. The win lifts the Panthers - who are ranked No. 14 nationally in the USA Today Super 25 poll - to 37-0 overall. The Panthers finish District play with a 12-0 mark. Pflugerville now awaits the pairings and times for the State 5A playoff Bi-District competition, which will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The Panthers will meet the fourth-place team from District 15-5A (Austin) in bi-district play.

Three Panthers were in double-digit scoring, led by senior forward Itiana Taylor's 17 points. Taylor logged a double-double as she pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. She also had a game-high five steals. Junior forward Diana Omozee (14 points) and senior guard Jasmyn Booker (10 points) followed Taylor, while junior guard Brenisha Payne chipped in with nine points.

The win for the Panthers also set the school record for most consecutive victories (37). The former record was a 36-game winning streak set by the 1977 team, playing in 3A competition, which won its first 36 game before falling in the state regional finals to finish 36-1. Pflugerville had tied that 36-game win streak with its 52-30 victory over District foe Georgetown on Feb. 3, a win which gave the Panthers their 22nd District championship.

The Panthers also are ranked No. 13 nationally in the MaxPreps Freeman (computer-generated) rankings and are No. 24 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national poll (human voting).

The Panthers led by 11 (46-35) after three quarters before Leander closed to within four, 46-42, with 6:40 to play. The Panthers then clamped down on defense, forcing Leander to turn the ball over in seven of its next eight possessions and out-scored the Lions 13-1 during this stretch to push its lead to 16 (59-43) on a Booker layup with 4:22 to go.

Leander committed 33 turnovers in the game and finished its season 17-17 with a 4-8 record in District play.

The Panthers had 21 steals to the Lions' eight steals.

Check back on Wednesday, Feb. 8 for details of Pflugerville's first State postseason playoff game.
