Posted Dec 28/11 - Panthers remain undefeated, advance to Mansfield Rotary Inviational championship with 57-52 semifinal win over Amarillo; will face Mansfield Timberview in Thursday's title game
MANSFIELD, TEXAS-- Behind another big double-double from senior Itiana Taylor who registered 22 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, No. 3 state-ranked Pflugerville stopped No. 24 Amarillo, 57-52, in the semifinals of the Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournament Wednesday night. The win was P'ville's fourth at the Invitational in two days and vaults the Panthers, 25-0, into Thursday's (Dec. 29) championship game against Mansfield Timberview. The Panthers are No. 3 in the most recent TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine, while Timberview (17-4) is ranked No. 12 in the poll. That title game takes place at 7 p.m. at Legacy High School. Senior guard Ari Booth (14 points) and junior forward Diana Omozee (10 points) joined Taylor in double-figure scoring. Omozee also added seven rebounds and had team-highs of five steals and three blocks. Junior guard Taylor Ross (six points) finished with a team-high six assists. It was Taylor's 14th double-double (double-figure scoring and rebounding) game this season, and her third double-double in four Rotary Invitational games.

Pflugerville led by as many as 10 points late in the game and took a 48-37 lead into the final period. In the final minutes, Amarillo finished with a three-point flurry and out-scored the Panthers 15-9 in the quarter to cut into P'ville's lead and give the Panthers a five-point final margin of victory.

This is the second consecutive year the Panthers have played in the Mansfield Rotary title game. Last year, head coach Nancy Walling's Panthers also defeated Amarillo in the semifinals (59-51) before falling to Canyon in the championship (57-41).

Pflugerville's 25-game win streak is the second longest in team history. The longest Pflugerville win streak took place during the 1992-93 season when Walling's Panthers won its first 32 games en route to a Texas UIL State Tournament (Final Four) appearance where it lost in the semifinals.

Mansfield Timberview advanced to Thursday's title game with Wednesday's quarterfinal win over 54-34 over Arlington Bowie before squeezing by Canyon, 37-34, in the semifinals.
