Posted Dec 27/11 - Pflugerville opens Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournament play with wins over McKinney Boyd (60-30) and Mansfield (64-57) to move to 23-0 and into the tourney quarterfinals
MANSFIELD, TEXAS-- Undefeated state-ranked Pflugerville opened play at the annual Mansfield Rotary Invitational Tournament Tuesday with two victories, defeating McKinney Boyd 60-30 Tuesday afternoon before upending state-ranked No. 22 Mansfield High School 64-57 Tuesday evening. The wins move Pflugerville, ranked No. 3 in the Texas Basketball Coaches Association (TABC)/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine poll, to 23-0. The Panthers next face another state-ranked team - No. 18 Cedar Hill (15-3) - in Wednesday's 1:15 p.m. winners bracket quarterfinal contest. The 32-team tourney continues on Wedneday and Thursday, Dec. 28 and 29. The Panthers are one of eight teams to go 2-0 Tuesday and advance in the winners bracket. Junior forward Diana Omozee led the way in the wins over Boyd and Mansfield as she notched team-highs of 15 points and 18 points, respectively.

Mansfield falls to 16-5 with the seven-point loss to the Panthers.

In the win over McKinney Boyd, Omozee grabbed seven rebounds in addition to her 15 points, while senior forward Itiana Taylor notched another double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Junior guard Taylor Ross added 12 points while senior guard Jasmyn Booker chipped in with nine points. Taylor led the Panthers with team highs of six assists and four blocks and helped P'ville to a big third-quarter push. Up nine at intermission (28-19), the Panthers pushed their lead to 24 (49-25) with a 21-6 run in the third quarter.

Against Mansfield, Omozee was joined in double-figure scoring by junior guard Brenisha Payne (15 points) and Ross (13). Taylor fell one point short of another double-double, netting nine points, but pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds and added six steals. P'ville led the Tigers at the half by six, 36-30, despite Omozee and Taylor sitting long periods in foul trouble. The Panthers then outscored MHS 15-8 in the third quarter to take a 51-38 lead into the final period.
