Posted Aug 24/13 - Comes down to Saturday

The stage is set for a battle for second place with Richmond at Latrace, after the Buzz cameup with a 6-4 win over the Legends in the rematch Tuesday in South Surrey. Ward pitched 5 shutout innings, as the Buzz built a 6-0 lead, and Tony and Kevin combined in relief to preserve the W, as a Legends late inning rally fell short. Nice to see a full bench again, with 14 , after the scarce buzzard lineup the previous game. Good luck in Richmond boys, you can do 'er, with a chance for a bye into the semi-final playoffs.

Posted Aug 19/13 - Buzz "short" in South Surrey

A small band of Buzzards battled hard in a 9-6 loss to the Legends Saturday morning in South Surrey. All the Buzz runs came in the first inning, powered by a grand slam to center off the bat of Keith Robertson, but we could score no more. Keith's homerun is the first non-Courtenay Buzzard dinger in a a few years.(since  Klaus ?) Tony and Kevin were battery mates the entire way, Tony started, then did the switcheroo with K.G. They pitched well enough to keep us in it, but again, no production after the fast start.  Thanks to the Legends for accomodating our low numbers, so we could at least have a real ballgame, it was fun. Not sure we want to play with 2 OF's in the late innings too often though, thanks anyway. Ah well, It kept Wardo and Lee busy. Looking forward to the rematch Tuesday night.

Posted Aug 10/13 - Happy Anniversary for Buzz

The Buzzards celebrated the gala LMBA 20th anniversary weekend, by defeating the Delta Stars 12-3 in South Surrey. Pitching was impressive, Kevin G. K'd 6 (including the side in order in the 4th), and Tony closed with 2 solid innings on the hill to preserve the big lead. Offensively it was well spread around, Jimmy Romer and Dave Mac each had two hits and scored twice, Mike reached 3 times and came around twice, Ward got on base consistently, Darren had 2 ribbies and a good defensive play, Keith R. chipped in with a pair of basehits. The Buzzards improve to 9-6 as we battle for playoff positioning in the LMBA 45+. Kudos to Commish Taylor and all the teams taking part in the anniversary festivities in S.Surrey.

Posted Jul 18/13 - Old ways creeping back into games!!!!

We started off really well with a 4 run 1st inning.........but that was all she wrote!!!! Credit to the Eagles as they nipped away at the score with timely hitting and base running............along with a few of our errors thrown in to help them along. We were able to get 9 innings in at ol' Central Park with both teams fighting the sun on the left side. The strikeouts continue to mount as it was in the early season....which is not a good sign, but hopefully we can remedy that fact before the playoffs. Next up.....the Royals on Saturday who we are now tied with....a better performance is needed ,boys!!

Posted Jul 13/13 - Streak snapped

Buzzards lost for first time in 5 games, 7-4 to Richmond. They cameup wth 4 in the first, and we never caught 'em. Randy Coutts had 3 runs scored, and 3 steals. Darren and Dan had two hits apiece, Darren adding two ribbies on the day. Tony drove in a run with a gapper in the 9th but the rally fell short. Unfortunately a few more K's than BB's dot our side of the scorebook.. Ah well, still a competitive ballgame on a fine day, and a chance to start a W streak anew Wednesday at Central vs. Eagles. Bring your shades for the OF boys.

Posted Jul 7/13 - Pitching trio do the job

The Buzzards have won 4 in a row, and 5 of their last 6, after downing the Legends 5-2 in a good one at Robbie Burn. Perfect weather and a tight, well played, well pitched ballgame. A pair of add on insurance runs in the 8th, fnally put it away. All 3 Buzzards who took the mound performed well, Pete L. went 3 allowing just 2 hits and a walk, Kevin Gordon racked up 8 K's in 5 innings of work (to go with his triple at the plate.. Coutter even wanted him to try for home!)  Wardo closed well, in the 9th..Solid OF play from the "Daves", & Les also helped the cause. Not tons happening offensively, but enough given the nature of this game, Les scored twice & had 2 steals . Good to see Rexy ride his bike over, and nice to see the club on this little mid-season roll..

Posted Jun 28/13 - Courtenay Yew Bat Tournament

The combination of the Buzzards and Eagles sucessfully defended their title at the Courtenay Yew Bat Tournament over the weekend. The scores were 8-0 ,11 -3 , 13 -5 , 11 -1 and the final was 18 -3........I think we have to consider moving down to the 30 over to get decent competition. Our team was completely dominating offensively and defensively! Our team batting average for the tourney was 493 with Buzzard Les Byers leading the way going 10 for 12 at the dish followed by Ward at 6 for 9 with a lot of walks. A few dingers by Couter(2) and Dean Mc(1) lifted the butts out of seats. Overall,  as usual, the weekend was full of  a lot of laughs, especially when Howard was picked off second!!!!!! Till next year!

Bit of an up and down one for our first win (as the homeside) at Robert Burnaby this season, and third W in last 4 games. Buzzards  opened up a 7-donut lead on the Royales, fell behind 8-7,&  won it 10-8 wih a 3 run 6th inning. Rick Morrow started and went 4 strong., Tony bridged the middle innings for us, (over some troubled waters at times, but hung in there) and cool customer Pete L. did a nice job closing. The guys generally showed good patience at the plate, and are generating some offence. Dave R. Neil, Jerry, and Jimmy Romer all with two hit games. The Buzzards, are 4-4, heading into next Saturday morning's meeting with the Stars in Ladner,as we give the wheel back to Wardo.

Posted Jun 3/13 - Combined ONE HITTER!!!

Kudos to Ward, Jerry Lynch and Rick Morrow for the combined one hitter!! We were able to complete the full nine innings out at Latrace on Saturday evening. We also were finally able to put together some timely hits along with several stolen bases to get the necessary runs to win the game. Overall, it was team defense that won the game. Great game guys!!!

Posted May 25/13 - Good game...but still a loss!

Well, it wasn't a win but it was a decent outing. New member Jerry Lynch went 2 for 3 ( robbed of another by a diving catch in right) and handled himself well at first ( especially when Neil throws them a little high across the diamond!) Mike and Neil also went 2 for 3 at the dish.  We had our chances to move some runners, but couldn't get the timely hits......have heard that line a few times!!!! Ward and Tony pitched well through 7 innings of ball. Could have held the score closer had Ward and Neil's  3rd base encounter (well discussed and planned pick off play during a time out) in the 5th gave the Stars an easy 2 runs.... next time!!

Posted May 11/13 - Boys on mound lead way

Wardo preaching "fun fun fun" (till Daddy takes the T-bird away), led by example working 5 strong innings in a 5-3 Buzz win over the Legends in South Surrey. Tony ambled out of the pen for 3 very solid innings of relief, between them they k'd 6 and had good control to go with it, walks were very scarce.  Dave Reeves had a good day, a running catch in deep LF, and helped generate offence in a game where runs weren't easy to buy.. Mike did a nice job behind the plate, and JImmy Romer had a couple hits, one a drive into the gap in left center early in the ballgame. Neil's sac fly plating Rick Morrow in the 8th, gave us an insurance run. A "fun" one, and we pick up our second W, in a tight ballgame. Rexy we miss ya, get well (and back) soon. Buzzards are slated to practise Wed. at Central, but  have next weekend off. Good effort boys.

Posted May 4/13 - A nice day at least

As Jimmy Buffet once crooned: "The weather is here, wish you were beautiful". The Buzzards hung in for 6 innings against the Eagles on a warm May Day, before the wheels wobbled.  Make the final 14-1 for the White Rock variety of birds. Eagles parlayed good sticks, and help from us into what became a lopsided ballgame. The Buzzard lineup was stretched thin, as we had to be creative to get all 9 positions filled in the late innings, it was a bit like Rocky Balboa tryin' to go the distance. Props to Rexy and Dave Reeves for taking the hill, with some of our regular pitchers unavailable. They helped get the ship into port at least. Les's line drive double plated Ward with the Buzz shutout breaker in the 8th. The Eagles at one point fielded an all southpaw infield, it was that kind of day. Good to see Keith F. back in action for them, but there was not much joy in Buzzardville over this outing at RB. Buzz now 1-3, visit White Rock Legends next Saturday morning.

Posted Apr 28/13 - Buzz tough mudders

It was what Dan Jukich would call a sloppy track, and at times a sloppy game, but Buzzards prevailed 11-8 over the Royales, who finally got a ballgame played. Said to Neil after;"not a pretty game", he replied: "not a pretty day".. About sums it up, the conditions probably toughest on the chuckers and catchers for both teams, a lot of BB/HP/WP/PB decorate the scoresheet.  Jimmy Romer continues his hot start with two hits,  Mike Bryan also had a couple. Lee(who?) provided some entertainment, caught leaning on a full count, 2 out (automatic go) pitch, D. Jonesy throws away pickoff, gift not good enough for lp,  still gets thrown out in a mudslide (literally) at third. Sorry 'bout the missed Ribbie Tony. The Buzzard dugout must be the place to be, cause the same D. Jones dropped by to spend an inning "hot stoveing" with us. Buzzard sticks seem to be on the  up(swing), Ward and Rick  got  er done on the hill, and we'll take the win. I think Mr. Morrow is enjoying this division's special brand of humour. Welcome to  new Buzzard  Keith Robertson yesterday.  Eagles visit Robert Burnaby next weekend, lets hope for some sunshine to greet Howie and Co.

The Buzzards jumped into a 3-0 lead at Robert Burnaby, only to fall 8-4 to Richmond. The Monarchs cameup with 5 runs in the 4th inning to take charge. Rick Morrow pitched 3 scoreless innings, Tony had a pair of hits, including a double to the left field corner. lp with two singles, Darren was robbed of a second hit by Dave D.'s diving grab at second.  An improvement on opener (wouldn't be hard), some signs of life offensively, just need more timely hits, and our A' game defensively. It'll come, another chance to crack the W' column next weekend.

The good news is, we got the game in, the not so good news...we got the game in. The Buzzards drop their season opener 9-2 to the Delta Stars, in Ladner. The field was surprisingly playable given the recent weather, but the Buzz never really got rolling in this one. The pitching of Kevin, Pete, and Ward was actually pretty decent, we weren't exactly mid-season tight defensively behind them, and the Stars found the holes. They had some hits that had "eyes."Offensively, we took 7 walks, but as many K's, Jimmy Romer's late inning 2 run double provided our scoring. It's early boys,it's only one, onward and upright, er upward.

The Buzzards closed the 2012 regular season, with a 13-4 win over the Eagles in South Surrey.  One of our better games with the sticks, the Buzz producing 19 hits on the day.  Wardo and Tony split the pitching duties, and had strong outings. Tony working 3 scoreless innings to close it out.  Lotta offensive contributions;Dave Mac a pair of doubles and 3 Ribbies, Jim Romer with 3 hits including a double. Dave R. walked twice and scored 3 times, Les went 2-2 with a couple walks, two stolen bases , and 2 runs scored. Ian W. also 2 fer 2, Neil & Mike chipped in a couple hits each too. Good way to enter the playoffs guys, the quarter-final game is slated for 7 Wednesday night, also at S.Surrey.

Tight one in Ladner, as the Buzzards lose a nailbiter 9-8 to the Delta Stars.  Lot of swings in momentum, the Stars got the walkoff hit to win it this time. A sunny day but as always in that park, a windy one, the buzz' shutout string of 13 innings, ending with a thud, with 5 for Delta in the 4th. Tony pitched well for 3,  until the ol' base on balls got him in trouble.  A Buzzard comeback had us briefly back in front, but we couldn't hold them off in the last inning. Both clubs had their share of offense (guess so, 17 runs on the board). C Mike Bryan led the way for us, 3 for 3, including a double in the gap, and two ribbies. Jack Allen delivered 3 RBI's, with a couple of timely hits and a sac.fly.  Dave Reeves scored twice and stole 3 bases atop the order.  Good ballgame, tough one to lose, but so she goes. Buzzards now 7-6, in another tight divisional race, heading into August.   No game on the long weekend, and no practise this coming Wednesday. Back at er' vs. the Royals Wed. Aug. 8th. 6:15 start at Robert Burnaby.

Pete L. and Wardo combined on a  shutout as the Buzzards blanked the Monarchs 5-0 at Latrace in Richmond. Pete started ,pitched well through 5, Ward with 4 solid innings out of the "pen", as the duo scattered 6 Richmond hits. Offensively, we didn't need tons really,  but after leading 3-0 much of the way, added a pair in the 9th for insurance.  Rex and Tony had long drives, Rex doubling on a shot to left,  Tony's deep  single drove in Dave Reeves with one of the add on runs, late in the ballgame. A tip of the cap to Dave R. for his dee as well, filling in nicely at second base. Showed good range, made some nice plays, looked at home there.  Kept 2B warm for Jack and Jimmy Romer (the burger baron was off enjoying "Kits days", and we mean enjoying.)Buzz improve to 7-5, & visit the Delta Stars next Saturday.

We present "an evening in Central Park", not exactly Bard on the Beach, or Theatre under the Stars, but fairly entertaining, we guess.  After sweeping the mud away, and trying to read Howie's chicken scratch lineup, the makeup game(no, not that kinda makeup) got underway about 15 mins late. Eagles picked up 3 in the first, we answered with 4 in the second.  See saw game, they ended up on the top of the teeter totter, 9-6.  A few Buzzard bright spots included a 3 hit game for Darren Turik, who was quite thrilled (not) when leaving for a pinchrunner concluded his night. Mike scored twice, Dan J. had a pair of hits including an RBI single. Dave Reeves reached twice, Tony boomed one to the fence in his only at bat, legging out a one bagger. Wardo was robbed of a likely double in the top of the 8th,by Eagles CF Dean"shopping cart-rage against the credit card machine- Mr. Blackfin -McVeigh." Whew, that's a long handle.  The lowlights of this one, some Barnum and Bailey under the BigTop baserunning by a couple Buzzards, who will remain anonymous for our purposes here.  It's ok guys, stuff happens. We kid cause we're kidders, and we've all been there. Eagles got the clutch hits, they get the win, whatcha gonna do? Real nice that Howie renewed his relationship with the strike zone against us, they had become estranged during the "Beagles" final game win in Courtenay last month. That snaps a 3 game W streak for the Buzzards, hope to start a new one Saturday in Rich-mond.

Les B. had a 2 run single earlier in the ballgame, and Darren Turik turned in a 3 hit day.  Mike Bryan doubled and scored once, went the distance behind the plate, stole 2 bases, and set a new (unofficial) LMBA record for longest time spent in a rundown. Dave R. and Neil H. each came around twice at the top of the order, Neil adding an insurance RBI sac. fly in the last inning. Ward and Pete shared the mound duties, a couple of DP's (and a nice catch by Rex in CF) helping the cause defensively.  Buzz improve to 6-4 with the W.

Posted Jul 7/12 - Another walkoff special

The Buzzards are 5-4, escaping a 6-donut hole, to win 7-6 over the Richmond Monarchs, thanks to a 3 run 9th. Buzz maybe a little drowsy(rusty) in the early going, credit to Richmond's skeleton crew of 9 for jumping ahead. The bats wokeup midway in the game, setting the stage for some lateshow drama.  Several  guys had multiple hit games, Darren Turik a pair of singles, plus the leadoff walk to trigger the 9th inning rally. Tony Maz is back in the saddle, 2 for 4 including the winner, an opposite field drive scoring Wardo easily from second. Tony was also behind the plate, the whole way on a warm day at the yard.   Dan J. a two hit day of his own, and reached base 3 times.  Neil chipped in a pair of hits as well, & was active at the hot corner. Ian Williams cameup with a nice running catch in foul territory to help keep the Buzz within reach, Dave Reeves was solid in center.  That Jimmy Romer guy.. not bad either, pair of doubles and 3 ribbies, including a key one in the decisive 9th.  Kudos to Pete L. for his ultra steady 5 shutout innings on the hill, allowing just 3 hits in that stint.  Exciting comeback guys. Summertime finally, and we're heading into a busy stretch of games starting next Saturday morning at S.Surrey vs Legends.

Buzzards, playing a home game in a road park, were spinning their wheels for 7 innings, with just two hits, but scored deuces in the 8th and 9th for a 4-3 win over the Delta Stars.  Timely two baggers did the trick.  Jack's two run double in the 8th, tied it at 2-2, plating lee and Mac, after Mac doubled himself. Despite surrendering a run in the 9th, the Buzzards prevailed. Darren T.smacked a double to left,  Dave Mac's(walkoff) single scored Darren, after Neil singled to keep the inning alive. Been itching to use the term "walkoff" in a writeup. Some mild controversy in the 9th, Rod Van D. (who along with Wardo pitched very well on the day), walked, and called for pinch runner Dave R. The Stars questioned the validity of the move, although RVD assures us he had trouble walking after the game, because of a sore calf muscle.  Also, Delta (last time we checked) were still allowed to get 3 outs before the winning run scored. Good ballgame, tough outcome for them. The W puts the Buzzards in a  logjam in the standings at 4-4.  Off to the Island for a Buzz/Eagles  group in the Yew bat tourney this weekend, then home to Royals on Sat. 23rd.

The Buzzards are 2-2 with a 16-4 victory over the Legends in surprisingly sunny South Surrey. A full team effort, lots of contributions...Dave Mac stinging the horsehide, including a double. Jim Romer lit up a bases clearing shot to the fence in the 7th, to really put it away.  Dave Reeves reached 3 times and scored 3 times at the top of the order.  Neil Hendren delivered one of the longer RBI singles in baseball history, a drive over the centrefielder's head, Neil wisely opting not to chance the extra 90 feet.  Game was very well pitched by starter Rod Van Dorn,(who chipped in a 2 run single down the line, kicking up the lime, or whatever they use to line the field now) Middle man Pete Langford, and Wardo closing also solid. Pretty good dee overall.  Nice of lp to pump weatherman- chucker Russ Lecate's tires with an 8th inning  swinging K.  Good job boys, not too many hiccups, and the Buzzards even their record at .500, still in the early May days.  We host the Richmond Monarchs next Saturday 9 AM. Buzzards ran into a free swinging Eagles team, (sans Howie) and dropped a 10-4 (breaker breaker) decision at Rob Burn.  The Eagles launched a 16 hit attack breaking open what was a close ballgame with 6 late runs.  A rejuvenated Keith had a day, among others for the visitors, but (more than) enough about them.  Darren Turik continued his torrid start with a pair of doubles.  Tony had a couple of hits, Neil, Rex, Jack and Les chipped in with the bat,  Ward had a nice placed bunt single. The Buzzards generated pockets of offence, but are still looking for timely hits with runners in SP, scoring position. All in all, some good things, but 10's more than 4 and we've got work to do at 1-2.  We visit the Legends next Saturday at 8:40 in the blessed a.m. at South Surrey./

The Buzzards are 0-1 after an 8-5 loss to the Delta Stars, at Dugald Morrison.  Tony M. and Rod Van D. split the pitching with Wardo cruisin' the Carribbean, and Pete Langford breaking curfew. Actually Pete was the recipient of a surprise party.  The stars were recipients of a few unearned runs in the ballgame,Buzzard miscues (the 'E' word), hurt the cause on opening day.  Offensive bright spots were Dave Mac's early two run single, and a double to left off the bat of Rex Swett, who hopefully is healthy enough to continue those sweet swings this season.  Darren Turik showed good patience at the plate and had a solid game at short, (if only he'd been safe at home). Lp, not so brilliantly put himself(0-fer) in the cleanup spot. Wardo returns to the helm for Saturday's meeting with the Royals at Robbie Burn. as we bid to even our record at 1-1.

The regular season is in the books for the Buzzards, with a 10-5 win over the Legends at Robbie Burn.  Warm day, our pitching was solid again, from Rod, Tony and Ward, in that order.  Our pitching staff, which also includes Pete Langford, held opposing hitters to a .260 batting average this season, and gave us a chance to win most games. We've also shown pretty dependable defence. This time, there was more run support on the table...keyed by a 4 run 7th inning.  Dave Mac, Tony Maz and Darren Turik helped spark the offence, with Wardo adding a double to left.  Jack Allen also delivered something we've been craving as a team...a bases loaded Ribbie! Buzzards, with the victory, finish above .500 at 8-7-1, a nice bounceback season.  On to the playoffs now... in what's been an extremely tight division this year.  (Practise Wednesday at 6 at Robert Burnaby)

In our second to last regular season game, played on a fine South Surrey evening, the Buzzards dropped a tight lowscoring decision to the White Rock Eagles.  The game was a pitcher's duel; our solid tandem of Tony and Wardo, vs Eagles southpaw Dave Harris and Howie (the sandman) Sandrel.  Offence was in short supply,(mosquitoes weren't) and our supply was a little shorter than theirs.  Les Byers with a pair of singles and Darren Turik accounted for our hits.   Hopefully we can rev up our bats for our regular season finale vs. Royals Saturday at RB, and carry that into the playoffs.

We had this coming to us!!! Richmond came out with solid hitting and very good pitching and took the lead. We finally started to come around half way through the game but just couldn't string some hits together to produce some runs and left many stranded on base. Also, on the defensive side, the throwing errors were contagious as we committed way too many to even think we could come back to win!!!!!!

The Buzzards sit at 4-2, after a soggy 9-5 loss to the Royals at Robert Burnaby.  The good news...we got the game in, thanks to the field prep of those same Royals who were home team for this one.  Dave Mac provided the defensive hi-lites wth 2 nice catches in center, running down a gapper, and diving for another.  We hit the ball hard at times, but didn't group our hits well enough.  Dan Jukich drilled a ball to right in the third for a double, might've been a dinger at Central or South Surrey, but Robbie Burn. held er' in.  Ward G. racked up 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases, (and at least 6 cellphone rings).  Thanks to the Commish Dan Taylor, and Klaus for riding to the rescue, so we could finish with 9 on the field.  (Some of the boys had to leave early).  Dan T's legendary comeback featured some work at second base in his brand new (Burlington) cleats, and a couple decent AB's. Rod Van D. worked 4 solid innings and threw in a smokin'single to left to boot.  We had our moments, finished wih a makeshift lineup, but ended up on the wrong end, in a winnable game.  Definitely some things to work on and get together, if we can grab a dry Wednesday for practise this week.
