Posted Jul 17/10 - Luke Falcons win big against Marines

The Luke Falcons varsity baseball team took on Marines from Camp Pendleton, San Diego, in a doubleheader Saturday at the Goodyear Ballpark.

As the first game started things didn’t look good for Luke as the first Marine batter hit it home. The Falcons quickly took control of themselves and the game with some strong plays.

The first inning was over quickly with only one Marine scoring and the Falcons failing to get a runner on base.  The trend of no runners on base continued through the second inning and into the third.

As the Falcons came to bat in the third, the pace of the game was flying. First batter Rick Janzer stood ready behind home base. With a solid crack of the bat Janzer hit the ball between the short stop and second baseman managing to get on base.  It was short-lived, however, as the Marines got a double play and struck out the next Falcon up to bat.

As the game progressed, the Marines scored one more run in the fifth inning before a double play by the Falcons stopped the Marines from scoring again.

Hope was running low for the Falcons until the seventh inning when both Jeremy Rojas and Paul Madrid made it on base. With two on, Mike Ortiz stepped up to bat. He hit a ball into left field, and was plucked up by the Marine left fielder. He threw to first but overcompensated making the ball skip by the first baseman. Rojas and Madrid were able to make it home, tying the game, while Ortiz ran to second during the confusion of the play.

With the game tied, both teams fought to gain the lead but were unsuccessful. The first game ended in a tie 2-2.

“The second game is where we took them,” said Nichalos George, Luke Falcons coach. “The Marines were not happy about the tie the first game. That’s when we really won. They lost focus and their team unity just wasn’t there anymore.”

The second game began much like the Marines started the first but this time the first batters from both teams made it home. Keeping up the momentum made the difference for the Falcons.

To the dismay of the Marines, the Falcons took a quick lead scoring three more runs in the second. After that, the Marines were able to hold off the Falcon fury for two innings before the Falcons scored yet again.

The Marines were not able to score after the first inning until the eighth inning when two Marine batters made it to first and second. The Marines third batter brought the first two home, but in the process, got himself out.  The Marines continued the inning with two more runs bringing them to yet another tie at 5-5.

The Falcons up to bat told the Marines how they felt about the tie. The first Falcon batter struck out while the next three batters, Dennis Bettcher, Gary Nelson and Heath Wimberley all made it home, ending the game. The Falcons won 8-5.

“It was good to beat the Marines,” Coach George said. “They bested us last year. It was sort of a miracle, because our team hasn’t played together for a while. But the Marines play all the time. This meeting didn’t make them happy.”

The Luke Air Force Base "Falcons" located in Glendale, Arizona is a men's varsity baseball team comprised of active duty, reserve, and retired military members.

The Falcons roster also includes dependents, DOD Contractors, and civilians with Luke AFB affiliation. Individual players range in rank from 0-4 to E-2 and encompasses many different career fields. Our breadth of military and baseball experience is large. The uniqueness of the Falcons is that we have a variety of experienced players who have played at all levels of baseball from high school to Division I college baseball.

The Falcons main objective is to boost the morale of many fine USAF Athletes and display professionalism while showing off the athleticism of the Air Force personnel. Our team will act as ambassadors and give not only a professional view of the United States Military, but also portray the commitment to excellence on the field. Due to great Arizona weather, the Falcons play year-round and are scheduled for 60+ baseball games a year. That includes preseason and postseason tournaments.

Along with Luke, other Air Force Bases that have varsity baseball teams are Andrews AFB, Davis Monthan AFB, Elmendorf AFB, Lackland AFB, Nellis AFB, Tinker AFB and Kadena AB. We hope that baseball becomes an official Varsity Sport for the Air Force.

Posted Jul 28/09 - Luke splits double-header with Marines

Luke Air Force Base shortstop, Danny Anguiano, prepares to slap a tag down on Raul Gonzalez, U.S. Marine Corps, in game two of the varsity baseball double-header Saturday at the Goodyear Ballpark. Falcon second baseman Jacob Ross backs up the throw as Gonzalez steals second on the play.

When the Luke Air Force Base varsity baseball team played their first-round playoff game three weeks ago it felt like a blur. They had to stomach a 9-3 loss to a team they beat by 15 runs three weeks earlier. After the loss, head coach Nichalos George said if they split their upcoming double-header with the Marines from Camp Pendleton he would forget about the playoff loss. Coach George can smile now as his Falcons won game one 3-0 Saturday at the Goodyear Ballpark. The Luke team pulled to within a run late, but fell 10-7 in game two. The win marked the first time the Falcons topped the Marines in more than two years. Last year Luke lost twice in a tournament at Nellis AFB, Nev., and then was beaten up on the Marines home field 15-1 and 14-3.“We came out with a fast start and were aggressive in the first game and I was very surprised,” George said. “This was one of the first times all year I’ve actually had to tell this team to slow down.” The game-one shutout came thanks to starter Paul Mezzetta’s gem. He gave up just one hit and three walks over nine innings. He also picked up ten strikeouts. The Marines managed just six base-runners. Coach George was happy to see Mezzetta bounce back from being starter in the playoff loss three weeks ago. “During the playoff game he was the same pitcher we saw today but he got rocked,” George said. “For him to come back and play an even better team and shut them down over nine innings when we normally only play seven, it’s the Mezz I know.”Jose Perez’ ground-out to second base in the fourth brought in a run and was all the Falcons would need. Chad Jennings and Gary Nelson also singled in runs. Paul Madrid picked up two singles in three at-bats. The Marines looked like they would run away with game two. Down 8-2, the Falcons scored a run in the fourth and then four more the next inning. Luke appeared to tie up the game when Henry Cotto stole third. A wild throw from the catcher ended up in left field, allowing him to score. The home-plate umpire called interference on the hitter, sending Cotto back to second. That is as close as the Falcons got. After an uneventful sixth inning, the Marines scored twice in the seventh. When the Falcons failed to tie it up in the bottom of the frame, the game ended because they reached a predetermined time limit. “The end of game two was what Luke baseball is all about,” George said. “We hit the ball very well and we came back.” Half of the Falcons will head to Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma for the Air Force Bash in two weeks. The other half will play the first two games of their summer league in Peoria that same weekend. “We’re getting toward the end of our season,” George said. “We finish in the beginning of November with maybe one tournament after that. All around, this is one of our better years.” Story and photo by 2nd Lt. RYAN DECAMP 56th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
