Columbus, Georgia was originally named in honor of Christopher Columbus and is located on the very end of the navigational portion of the Chattahoochee River. The city's commercial importance increased in the 1850's with the arrival of the railroad. In addition, textile mills began springing up along the river. By the 1860, the city was one of the more important industrial centers of the South. Today, Columbus is home to Aflac, the provider of worldwide supplemental insurance policies and TSYS, a global payment solutions provider . Neighboring Phenix City is home to Mead Coated Board. Columbus is also home to professional sports organizations to include Columbus Lions, and the Columbus Cottonmouths. The Columbus Lady Wings Semi-professional Women's basketball team, is the first women's semi-professional team in Columbus, Georgia.

The Columbus Lady Wings Semi-Pro Women’s Basketball team is proud to announce its return for the 2012 season.  The Lady Wings are the first semi- professional women’s team (of any sport) to represent the city of Columbus, Georgia.  The Lady Wings are proud to represent Columbus through league play; local events; educational and charitable opportunities; and through our generous sponsors.
