Backdoor game Coastal cup
After losing a hard faught game vs Whalley Celtics in the semi-finals of the coastal cup, Richmond had a second life as they were to face Abby Mariners (who also lost their semi-final) in the Backdoor game in the Coastal Cup for the final spot in the Provincial Cup. On a rainy day in Richmond, the boys came off to a quick start with an early goal to take a 1-0 lead to shock the Abby players. After starting off the game on the right foot, Richmond Utd drew a free kick approximately 20 yards outside the 18 yard box. The Richmond kicker made no mistake with a cross right to the striker who did his job running in the box with speed and bagging another one. Just like that it was 2-0 with the game not even 20 minutes old. The slippery and windy weather was quite a factor in this ganme, but the home team faught off all the odds by playing disciplined soccer through out the match to maintain their early 2 goal lead. Abby scored a very late goal to make things interesting, but the Richmond defense was to strong for the opposing squad as they held on to their lead to make the final elimination in the Coastal Cup and pocket the final spot in the Provincial Cup. Richmond will now take a well deserved break and will get back at it in the near future. After all the hard work, all the goals, all the saves, all the stress, all the pressure and all the work rate, effective immediately, Richmond Utd is finally on the road to the Provincial Cup in Kamloops,BC. See you then.
Round Robin Coastal Cup
As game one vs Surrey Utd finally came upon us, the boys were ready to show the opposing squad that they were to be no competition in this round robin game of the Coastal Cup. Surrey also knowing that this is a single elimination game, came in looking for a victory. Richmond started off strong scoring in the early period of the game, contributed by a solid team effort. Until the end of the first half, Richmond did not look like themselves by playing sloppy, giving the ball away and not going hard into challenges. After the feeling of a first round knockout had finally melted into the boys mind's, they stepped it up a notch in the second half showing Surrey why they were league cup champions. Richmond caught Surrey Utd by surprise, scoring in the third minute of the second half and never turned back scoring another goal in the half. Surrey tried to make things exciting by scoring one of their own on a defensive miscommunication by Richmond, but any kind of momentum was quickly shut down by another Richmond goal to seal the deal. Richmond Utd marched to a 4-1 victory over Surrey Utd, ending the oppositions season early. Richmond will look to keep their playoff sucess alive next Saturday vs a tough North Delta squad in the quarter-finals of the Coastal Cup.
