HOW THE WEST WAS WON!!! TRI CITY INDIANS UPSET HEAVILY FAVOURED RUTLAND ROCKIES TO WIN 2009 BANTAM AAA WESTERN CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP

The Tri City Indians went into the gold medal game of the 2009 Bantam AAA Westerns as heavy underdogs against the Rutland Rockies. The Rockies had demolished everyone in their path out scoring the opposition 38-2 in 4 round robin games, including a 9-1 win over Tri City Thursday night. Sunday's final would be very different.

The Rockies started their ace Johnny Bauer, who dominated Tribe hitters on Thursday. The Tribe countered with 1st year Macoy Erkamps in what could have been a great pitching matchup but that was not the case.

TC jumped all over Bauer in the top of the 1st scoring a 3 spot on just 1 infield hit while the Rutland defense made 2 critical errors. BC's strong offense responded with a 2 spot in the bottom of the 1st on a couple of walks and a double by Jesse Long. The game stayed 3-2 after 3 innings as both pitchers started to settle in.

In the top of the 4th, the Indians got to Bauer again with 3 straight hits to begin the inning: singles from Taylor Lawrence and Vinnie Martin, combining with a double from Josh Fregin. All 3 would eventually score. A 2 RBI double by Connor Noble knocked Bauer out of the game. Luke Cooke came in relief of Bauer and only allowed 1 run in 3 2/3 IP.

From then on, it was the Macoy Erkamps show as he held team BC hitless for the rest of his outing. After a leadoff walk and with his pitch count maxing out in the top of the 7th, Erkamps was pulled in favour of Mitch Stewart. Stewart came in and with a strike zone that appeared to become smaller and smaller, the strike throwing machine failed to find his grove. After 2 hits and 2 walks, Ryan Hunt was called on to close the game out. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Rockies CF Dallis Senger 1 bounced the fence in right field setting up a very questionable play at the plate where Rockies runner Matt Bryan was throwing out on a Didyk/Waddington/Martin relay at the plate. Questionable play as Bryan's run didn't really mean anything and ran himself into the 2nd out of the inning. After a walk, Dawson Yates represented the tying run. On a 2-2 pitch, he flied out to Ran Rufh in CF and the Tri City Indians had won the 2009 Bantam AAA Western Canada Championship by a 9-6 score.

There were several players who had trememdous weekends for the tribe. Macoy Erkamps was given the Tournaments Top Pitcher Award while Connor Noble took home the Tournaments Most Valuable Player Award.

In all, the Tribe decided to play their best ball of the season when it counted. As a coach, I pointed out to the team several times that every season has peaks and valley's and we had yet to reach our peak. Looks like we picked the right time to reach it.

I would like to thanks the 6 pick ups that joined our team for the tournament. Chris, Orson, Connor, Macoy, Vinnie and Ryan; you guys were great additions to the team. Every one of you blended in perfectly and did not look out of place at all. Thank you very much!

As for the rest of the team, you guys worked all year to get to this spot. Starting right from the first workout in January, we prepared for this moment. Every single one of you should be proud of your accomplishment.

Taylor, Josh, Danny & Cody: You 4 were chosen to lead this team at our last tryout and you did not dissapoint. The way the team came together at the provincials and in Rutland was attributed to your leadership skills. Your 2 years of playing Bantam AAA have paid off. Good luck in 2010.

Russ, Mitch, Troy & Jamie: You 4 came onto the team new to AAA Bantam. All of you have very strong baseball skills and you guys showed them during the season. Good luck in 2010.

Willie, Hunt, Mose, Cole, Max: You 5 were the young guns of the Tribe. You 5 are special ball players and working hard this year will only make you better next year. I hope you all come back next year and we can make a run at the National Gold Medal.
