Posted May 13/10 - Sullivan East wins the District 1 AA Championship
The Sullivan East Patriots did the unthinkable, they beat Unicoi County on back to back nights, with sophomore pitchers on the mound, to win the Three Rivers Conference-District 1 AA Championship.  The Patriots won by the score of 2-0.  On Wednesday, East threw sophomore left handed pitcher, Aaron Boling, who had only threw eight Varsity innings all season.  According to Coach Breuninger's quote in today's Johnson City Press, Thursday night's starter, Kyle Harris, had threw less than that for the Patriots this season.  Many of our Longhorn players and parents will remember Harris, because his dad, Curtis, coached the South Holston Red Team during the summer of 08, when we were playing Senior League Baseball.  Kyle Harris pitched into the 7th inning on Thursday night before giving way to right hander, John Buchanan.  The Blue Devils started a well rested Logan Rice.  Rice pitched a great baseball game, but his offense did not hit many balls hard for him on Thursday.  Unicoi County had runners on 1st and 3rd in the 7th with one out, when their batter bunted a ball back to Harris.  Harris hesitated, looked at second base, and then threw to first.  The runner was safe.  The Blue Devils now had the bases loaded with one out.  Coach Breuninger made the change.  The bearded Buchanan was brought in to close the deal.  The Blue Devils had Holden Tolley in the box.  Tolley had a great season, and made the all tournament team for Coach Baxter's ball club.  If he played for the Longhorns he would have been taking until he got a strike, as they were down 2 or more runs past the 5th inning, and a new pitcher was on the hill.  Tolley did not take.  He popped the first pitch up in foul territory to the East Third Baseman.  That made two outs.  Conference player of the year, Logan Rice, was up next.  There was no on else Unicoi would have wanted up to bat.  Rice did not come through, he grounded out to second base to end the Unicoi threat, and the game.  The Sullivan East Patriots earned the 2010 Three Rivers Conference District 1 AA Championship, by beating Unicoi County on back to back nights, behind the pitching of two soft tossing, sophomore, left handed pitchers.  Unicoi County will now travel to South Greene on Monday to play the Rebels in a regional semifinal game.  The Patriots will host Greenville.
