It bothers me to see so many pitchers being asked to start, and go deep in games, on only two days of rest. In our two district tournament games we made sure Sammy Hampton was on three days rest on Friday, and Cody Greer was on four days rest on Sunday. As a baseball coach I can understand bringing a pitcher out of the bullpen on two or even one days rest to get out a big jam and allow them to throw 20-30 pitches, but much more than that is not good for their arms. There is a valid reason that major league teams have five man pitching rotations. Each arm needs proper rest before starting again. Relief pitching is different than starting. That is just my philosophy, but one I will follow throughout my career when I have the ability to influence or pick who pitches. I refuse to put winning a baseball game over the health of a player.
