Posted Mar 18/10 - Varsity and JV Have Their Way With The Bulldogs From Hampton
Cody Greer earned his first victory of the 2010 high school baseball season on Thursday afternoon at the Hampton Bulldogs.  The senior right hander pitched a complete game (five innings due to the mercy rule), while striking out six against only one walk, and allowing only four hits.  We hope this is the beginning of a big season from Greer.  Austin Humphrey led the way offensively.  The slugging corner outfielder went 3-4 with a 2B that plated two runs.  Danny Herman, getting his second straight start at designated hitter, went 2-3.  Herman scored twice and had an RBI.  Centerfielder Eric Cullop went 2-4, with an RBI, run, and a stolen base.  First baseman, Tyler Fenner, had a hit, knocked in a run, and scored a run.  He put some better swings on the ball against Hampton.  We hope it's a sign of things to come from Tyler.  Sawyer Ward continued his blazing start to the season by picking up 2 RBI, scoring 2 runs, and leading off the game with a 2B.  Catcher, David Lunceford, hit a deep double, and Sammy Hampton, playing the shortstop position, recorded a hit, and knocked in a run.  Cody Greer helped his own cause by scoring twice, reaching base with a base hit and a walk.  We did what an up and coming team is supposed to do, and that's easily handle a team that we are physically superior to.  We did not have much of an intensity letdown coming into Hampton after traveling to Unicioi County on Tuesday.  That's a sign of a mature, veteran ball club.  The Longhorns travel to Holston, VA on Friday, to battle the Cavaliers.  A JV game will follow the Varsity game.

Our JV Club opened the season with a 16-9 victory over Hampton.  Harley Reece settled down on the mound after a rough first inning to earn the win.  We do not have official numbers from the game, but Judd Hammons and Jacob Henson showed why the sky is the limit as far as their high school baseball careers are concerned.  Chad Hodgkiss showed that he truly is one of the most improved players, Varsity or JV, in upper East TN.  Hodgkiss played a very good second base.  Freshman Ryan Mahala, Daniel Helm, and Ryan Smith, all played solid in their first extended high school baseball action.  Zack Storz, Kyle Miller, and Caleb Boudle, also contributed for the Longhorns.  Andy Woods pitched the final inning to finish the game.  We are very excited about our JV Program.
