Posted Mar 16/10 - Longhorns 7 at Blue Devils 12 Recap
No one would dare take anything away from the Unicoi County Blue Devils Baseball Program, but any game recap concerning a game played at Baxter Field has to include the small dimensions of that ballpark.  The Blue Devils hit six home runs off of Longhorn Pitching on Tuesday afternoon.  Four or five of those homers would have stayed inside our park here in Johnson County.  It's very tough on a pitching staff when you know that anything hit in the air has a chance to go out.  In saying that, the Longhorns hopefully earned a little bit of respect and gained some confidence as the 2010 season gets underway.  Johnson County had a 7-2 lead on the defending conference champions going into the bottom of the 3rd.  Senior Second Baseman, Zack Hayworth, hit a three-run bomb in the bottom of the 1st scoring Sawyer Ward and Eric Cullop, who reached on base hits.  Austin Humphrey hit a towering solo home run in the top of the 3rd to create the 7-2 score.  The Longhorns actually had runners at 1st and 3rd base, when Coach Charlie Baxter brought in defending conference pitcher of the year, Logan Rice, to put out the flames.  Johnson County did not cross the plate again on the afternoon, and the Blue Devils continued to take advantage of the dimensions of their ballpark, because they are a very good baseball club.  The 7-2 lead turned into a 12-7 defeat, but not without making many who visted Baxter Field, think twice about our baseball club.  Starting pitcher, Sammy Hampton helped his own cause, going 2-3 with a 2B and 2 runs batted in.  Junior, Sawyer Ward, had two hits for Johnson County, and Tyler Fenner, and David Lunceford also contributed base hits.  See the "Schedule" page for a box score of this game.  The Longhorns travel to play the Hampton Bulldogs in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30, with a JV game to follow.
