Posted Apr 22/11 - Horns Rebound Vs. Sullivan Central

If you can imagine a school boy getting beat up by a bully on Thursday and coming back on Friday looking for revenge, and getting it, that was Longhorn Baseball on Friday.  A day after getting humiliated by the Sullivan Central Cougars by the score of 13-0, we hosted them on Friday, and Sawyer Ward pitched a complete game 3 hitter (Central had 17 hits on Thursday).  Ward, who improved to 3-1 on the season, had his slider working from the first inning on.  He struck out 2 and walked 2 and threw less than 85 pitches in the complete game gem.  This was a unique situation in the schedule.  It was similar to a college baseball schedule, because rarely in a high school season do you play the same team on the next day (although due to rescheduling we travel to Elizabethton on Monday and host the Cyclones on Wed.).  Sullivan Central threw a left handed pitcher on Thursday who did not have a lot of velocity and we did not show patience, wait on the ball, and hit it where it was pitched.  We struggled with our approach at the plate and struggled to make adjustments during the course of the game.  On Friday our pregame batting practice focused on using the entire baseball field on offense and not just looking to pull the ball (hitting it to the left side for a right handed hitter).  We had a positive BP (batting practice) and that seemed to carry over to the game.  Sophomore shortstop, Judd Hammons, led off the game with a single to right field and our offense was sharp from there.  Hammons added another hit on the day that knocked in 2 runs.  He also scored a run and stole a bag.  Sammy Hampton hit a double, in the two hole, Sawyer Ward added a single from the three spot in the batting order, Mark Jennings knocked in a run on a single from the cleanup spot, Austin Humphrey had two hits, including a double from the sixth spot in the batting order, Danny Herman had a much needed good offensive game with 2 hits, including a double, Andy Stout continued his good overall play with a 2 RBI single and stolen base from the eight spot, and Jacob Henson added a sacrifice bunt, walk, and a double from the ninth position in the batting order.  Designated Hitter, Harley Reece was the only Longhorn offensive starter without a hit.  Chad Hodgkiss, playing defense for Reece, made a nice catch on a shall pop up going to his left from his second base position.  In all we had 11 hits and only committed 1 error on defense.  It was a great way to finish up what had been a nightmare of a week.  We hope it's a sign of things to come, as Mark Jennings, who has been resting a sore arm, will take the mound on Monday at the Elizabethton Cyclones in Three Rivers Conference action.
