11-0 & 18-2 Longhorn Wins Against The Hampton Bulldogs

*Sawyer Ward now has an amazing 23 RBI in our first ten games of the 2011 season (20 RBI led the team in 2010-Tyler Fenner), as he had 7 runs batted in, in our doubleheader sweep of the Hampton Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.  Ward hit a home run (3rd of the year) and two triples on the day.  He has also earned his second win (2-0) of the season, as he pitched a shutout in the five inning complete game.

*Junior designated hitter, Harley Reece, hit his 2nd homer of the 2011 season, a 3-run shot in the bottom of the 1st.

*Senior third baseman, Mark Jennings, went 7-7 (all singles) in the doubleheader sweep.

*Ward, Jennings and sophomore shortstop, Judd Hammons, each scored four runs each in the two games combined.

*Junior right handed pitcher, Andy Stout, earned his second career Varsity win (both against Hampton) as he struck out six Bulldogs in the game two win.

*The Longhorns had an amazing eighteen hits in the 18-2 game two victory.

Note-Hampton is a ball club we normally beat and no offense to them, but we often play down to their level, but on Friday, we played nice baseball in all three phases of the game, offense, defense, and pitching.

JV Longhorns earn two 5-3 decisions against University High
*Sophomore right handed pitcher, Ryan Mahala, struck out 8 in a complete game effort and hit his first career home run, as the JV Longhorns earned a hard fought 5-3 win in game one of the Saturday doubleheader.  It was a hard fought victory, because the first pitch was thrown at 10:00 AM.  This was after the JV Horns who play both Varsity and JV had played seven baseball games during the week.  Sophomore, Andy Woods, improved to 3-0 on the season, as he gave up 2 earned runs in 3 2/3 innings of game two in the 5-3, five inning win..  All of the runs Woods gave up (3) came in the first inning, so he settled down nicely.  Freshman left handed pitcher, Jake Sutherland, pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn his first career save in game two.  The University High Junior Bucs had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 5th in game two, but Sutherland got a ground ball to shortstop, Judd Hammons, that started a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.  Sophomore centerfielder, Jacob Henson went a combined 5-6 with an RBI 2B, two runs scored, and 3 stolen bases on the day.  Junior, Bobby Taylor, continues to improve, as he knocked in 3 runs on the day.  He had a couple of base hits, a sac. fly, and made a couple of nice catches in left field.  Sophomore catcher, Ryan Smith, also continues to swing a much improved bat, as he went 2-5 on the day.  Smith also scored runs in both games.  We hope Saturday was an indication that big sophomore first baseman, Daniel Helm, is about to get hot with the bat, as he went a combined 3-6 on the day with a 2B and a run batted in.  Helm also displayed a nice glove at first base.  The JV Longhorns are now 7-2 on the season.
