Posted Mar 20/11 - Recap Of A Weekend Of Longhorn Baseball
A busy weekend of baseball for the Longhorn Baseball Program began on Friday, with a trip to Virginia, to play the Holston Cavaliers.  Sawyer Ward, at least for the time being, wrapped up the third spot in our starting pitching rotation, with a great performance against the Cavaliers.  He struck out 8 Holston batters in 6 innings pitched, with a dazzling curveball and nasty slider.  He threw 106 pitches on the day.  We really think that Ward's working as a pitcher since November, being on our throwing program, has really helped him feel like a true pitcher, instead of a position player who can pitch if need be.  Mark Jennings was due to throw a bullpen on Friday and earning a save in the 7th inning to close the Holston game down was a great way to get a pen in.  Harley Reece provided all the offense the Longhorns needed in the 5-1 win, as the big designated hitter hit a 3-run bomb over the left field fence to give Johnson County a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.  A full boxscore is available by clicking on the this game on the schedule page on the left.

The JV Longhorns went 3-0 on the weekend, as they beat the Holston Cavs. by a score of 12-3 on Friday and beat the Mitchell County Mountaineers by scores of 9-1 and 12-0, on Saturday at home.  Andy Woods earned his first career win on Friday night as he struck out five Cavaliers in 4 innings on the mound.  Freshman, Jake Sutherland, made his career debut, as he pitched the last 2 innings for Johnson County.  Jacob Henson and Ryan Mahala shut down the Mountaineer offense on Saturday.  Mitchell County only had one hit off of them on Saturday (a 1B off Henson in game one).  Mahala pitched a five inning (mercy rule) no hitter in game two on Saturday.  Daniel Helm knocked in four runs for the JV Longhorns on Friday and Judd Hammons and Jacob Henson both hit triples for Johnson County on Saturday.  Complete boxscores for these games are available.

The Longhorns (1-1) travel to Sullivan North for a key early season doubleheader on Tuesday, and the JV Longhorns have a 4-0 record, but it's came against teams they were expected to beat.  On Thursday the competition steps way up, as they travel to Bristol to play the TN High Vikings in JV action.  Hope to see you at the ballpark.  Thanks for supporting Longhorn Baseball!!
