Baseball Academy Fall Newsletter 2011

1.       The Baseball Academy is in the midst of a successful Fall Instructional League with trips to Okotoks, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat.  Overall the Baseball Academy will play over 85 games.

2.       The Baseball Academy has been split into five rosters for the first time.  The Black roster which is primarily made up of graduating students, the Blue Roster which is made up of grade 11 students, the White roster which is made up of grade 10 students and the St. Thomas More Students who have two rosters that are split into teams of pee wee ages and bantam ages.

3.       The Baseball Academy hosted a successful Showcase tournament on September 23 to 25 at Telus Field and Centennial Park in Sherwood Park.  There were 23 games played over a 3 day period which included teams from the University of Calgary, Prairie Baseball Academy, Vauxhall, Medicine Hat, Sherwood Park, Okotoks, Professional Baseball Force and Ft. McMurray.  The tournament was also attended by MLB professional scouts and College Scouts from across the Country.

4.       Spring Training is also again on the agenda for this year’s group of Baseball Academy students.  They high school academy students will play games in Clearwater, Florida against teams from Minnesota, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Florida.  The Junior High School students will again make a trip to British Columbia to play games against Pee Wee and Bantam teams from the lower mainland.

5.       Cory Scammell who was selected in the MLB draft did sign his first professional contract in August and is currently attending instructional league in Peoria, Arizona. 

6.       The Baseball Academy students represented well again this year on Alberta Select Teams.   The Western Canada Summer Games team had four students and three instructors on that roster.  The Team Alberta Canada Cup team had eight players and one coach on that roster.  There were well over twenty students on rosters for showcases and Zone Teams at various Alberta identification tournaments.

7.       The Baseball Academy had three students attend the Mizuno Camp in Toronto, Ontario at the Rogers Center in September.  Cole Schneider, Ryan Anderson and Markus Blair all participated in a Baseball Canada event that helps identify players for the National Junior Team.
