St. Louis Surge Hosts Power Supporter Dinner

Posted May 6, 2014

More than 25 influential women gathered for the first-ever Power Surge Supporter Dinner at Brazikat Brazilian Steak & Seafood. The Power Surge Supporter Dinner was a private dinner reception, hosted by St. Louis Surge Owner, Khalia Collier. The dinner provided a platform for Collier to share her vision of building a women’s basketball professional franchise supported by female visionary leaders who support the evolution of women’s sports.

During the dinner, Collier directly asked guests for their support.

“I have a dream and a vision; one that will not only impact the Surge organization, but the entire St. Louis community. I need the support of influential women who support the evolution of women’s sports, so I called upon all of you,” said Collier.

According to Collier, the evolution of women’s sports is being able to market female athletes as dynamic role models and mentors in the community and not just their athletic talents. Last season, the Surge dedicated countless hours to several volunteer and community initiatives, youth training camps, as well as speaking arrangements at various educational seminars.

During the event, Surge players, Jaleesa Butler, Rebecca Harris, Leah Kassing, Devonna Smith had the opportunity to share with the group why they are Surge supporters.

“I joined the Surge because I have a passion for basketball and I am looking forward to what the Surge will be doing in the community this year,” said Harris, a new 2014 recruit.

In addition to Surge players, Power Surge Supporters, Beth Davis, President of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment; Miho Tanaka MD, Director of Women’s Sports Medicine Initiative Regeneration Orthopedics; and Jenny Dibble, Vice President of Digital Engagement at Coolfire Studios had an opportunity to share why they are supporters.

“I support the St. Louis Surge, not because Khalia is infectious, as we all know, but because she has a business mind-set and more importantly a dream,” Davis said. “We all have had a dream at some point, which has pushed us further into our careers. But now it is time for us to give back, so let’s help Khalia reach her dream.”

Tanaka addressed her passion for women’s athletics, medical research surrounding women’s athletics, as well as the importance of knowing how to treat female injuries.

Lastly, Dibble expressed how athletics played an important role in her childhood and how the Surge is helping to fill the gap of women’s professional athletics in St. Louis.

“I cannot wait to bring all of my nieces to the Surge games,” said Dibble.

Everyone in attendance will have an opportunity to receive exclusive perks throughout the Surge season, as well as the prestigious title of “Power Surge Supporter”.
