Tigers receive National awards
Sat, May 30, 2009 - [Baseball]
Bryan Fuller, Curtis Payne, Chris Curley, Brian Chase, and Nathan Quesenberry.
There were many tears of sadness after the Tigers loss at the NAIA World Series, but many tears of joy were mixed in, as the greatest season in the history of the Tigers baseball program came to an end.
It is so very hard to just get to the World Series, as Head Coach, Beauford Sanders can attest to. Although it was two bitter sweet losses at the World Series, the memories of this season will last forever. This team will go down as the first team to reach the Series and no one can ever take that from them.
Since arriving back from Lewiston, Idaho, many Tigers have been receiving National accolades.
On Wednesday, Bryan Fuller and Curtis Payne were named NAIA Academic All-Americans.
On Thursday, Chris Curley and Brian Chase were announced as NAIA 2nd Team All-Americans. The NAIA recognizes 17 on the 1st and 2nd Team.
Today, following the NAIA World Series Championship Game, the National Tournament Awards were announced, and our very own Nathan Quesenberry is the recipient of the Hank Burbridge Champions of Character player award.
Congratulations to the Tigers on a memorable year.

For Campbellsville University, making its first trip to the NAIA World Series, baseball has been a game of lost opportunities since it arrived in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Tigers left 21 base runners stranded in two games (13 on Saturday) and lost 6-5 to Southern Poly State (Ga.). The loss bumped the Tigers from the tournament and Southern Poly won its first-ever World Series game in its third trip to Lewiston.
Campbellsville led 2-1 and 4-3, but left five runners on base in the last three innings while trying to rally against the Hornets.
For Southern Poly, Josh Grooms stole the headlines with a three-hit game and four RBI ... the last hit a solo home run that proved to be the margin of victory.
The Tigers were potent at the plate, strafing 15 hits and getting a runner on in each inning. Colin Bryan had four singles and Alex Ponich a single and two doubles to lead the Tigers' hitting attack. Chris Curley, and Nick Bertolucci had an RBI apiece and Zach Townsend knocked in two runs on a groundout and a sacrifice fly.
Dustin Carder was the winner in relief of SPS starter Mark Doll.
Eric Mattos shouldered the loss in relief of starter Bryan Fuller. Fuller, probably the most celebrated athlete in Campbellsville University history with his 21 consecutive scoreless innings in the region, relinquished three runs on seven hits and two walks in a starting role. He struck out five.
Mattos was victim of two runs in the seventh that gave Southern Poly a 5-4 lead, even though he gave up but one hit. Southern Poly used a two-base error and two fly balls to plate its fourth and fifth runs.
The Hornets won their 52ndgame in 61 starts. Campbellsville ends its season with a record of 40-12.
The Tigers scored two in the second and one each in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings. CU left two runners on in the fifth and sixth and three on in the eight when they loaded the bases with two outs.
In the second, Rob Elliott scored as a pinch runner for Jimmy Voelker, who reached on an error. Bertolucci's single plated Ponich, who reached on a bunt single.
The Tigers tied the score 3-3 in the fifth when Curley's single scored Tyler Derby who singled to leadoff the inning.
In the sixth the Tigers edged ahead 4-3. Townsend, who walked, scored when Nathan Quesenberry hit into an error at short.
CU's final run came in the ninth when Townsend's sacrifice fly scored Elliott, again running for Voelker who had singled.
In addition to Ponich and Bryan, Curley, Derby and Voelker had two singles apiece, and Bertolucci and Brian Chase a single each.
Spencer Frantz pitched the last inning for Campbellsville.
The season-ending loss signaled the CU careers of seniors Elliott, Fuller, Quesenberry, Marc Wilson, Nick Smith and Voelker.

Tyler Derby had two singles in the 5-2 loss to Lee University.
The Campbellsville University Tigers didn't have any trouble navigating the more than 2,000-mile trip out west for the NAIA World Series, it was the 270 feet of base paths they couldn't complete.
Campbellsville left eight runners on base Friday morning in Lewiston, Idaho and lost to Lee University 5-2.
Playing last year's World Series runner-up, the Tigers relinquished four runs on home runs in the first four innings before starting pitcher Marc Wilson settled in.
Lee's Chris Warters hit his 17thhomer of the season in the first for a 2-0 Lee lead and Chris Dubon and Junior Rodriquez had solo shots in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
Jimmy Voelker had a solo home run in the second to close the lead to 3-1 and a bases-loaded walk to Brian Chase in the third made it 3-2. But the Tigers could not dent the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Campbellsville left five more runners stranded from the fourth to the ninth and could not overcome an unearned run in the seventh that completed Lee's scoring.
Wilson, who gave up six hits through the first four innings, scattered three the rest of the way. He struck out seven.
Tyler Derby and Chris Curley had two singles apiece and Alex Ponich and Nick Bertolucci each hit safely.
Campbellsville plays the loser of the Berry (Ga.) vs. Southern Poly State (Ga.) game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the losers' bracket of the 10-team, double-elimination tournament.

By Joan C. McKinney, news and publications coordinator
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Friday, May 22 is "Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball Day" as a result of a joint city/county proclamation Tuesday behind Hawkins Athletic Complex. Campbellsville Mayor Brenda Allen and Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers read the proclamation which proclaimed the "entire CU baseball Tigers team members have demonstrated a season of excellence, academic achievement, servant leadership and extraordinary performance on the baseball field and have brought national attention to Campbellsville University and the Campbellsville-Taylor County community."
Allen and Rogers spoke about their pride for the Tigers' accomplishment of playing in their first-ever Avista NAIA World Series. The Tigers play Lee University at 11:30 a.m. EDT May 22 in Lewiston, Idaho.
The proclamation also expressed gratitude to Coach Beauford Sanders, and his coaching staff, who "have done a tremendous job in motivating the young men on the Tigers baseball team and Coach Sanders has now won 835 games during his career as a head coach."
The proclamation also mentions the accomplishment of pitcher Bryan Fuller for his "remarkable performance in the NAIA regional by pitching 21 consecutive scoreless innings in three games over a little more than 24 hours."
The baseball team is 39-10 and won the NAIA regional tournament in Lindenwood, Mo., May 15 to advance to the World Series.
Campbellsville University President Michael V. Carter spoke words of support and encouragement to the team during the proclamation ceremony, and Baseball Coach Beauford Sanders expressed his appreciation to the local officials, faculty and staff who gathered to see off the team.
Other visitors included ESPN personnel including Jeremy Schaap, well-known reporter.
An interview done with ESPN is scheduled to air Thursday, May 21, at 11 p.m. on SportsCenter.
An interview done with Coach Beauford Sanders by John Chowning, vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president, will air tonight on TV-4 on Comcast Cable Channel 10 at 7:30 o'clock. Bryan Fuller was also interviewed by Benji Kelly, vice president for development. The show, which features both Sanders and Fuller, will be repeated at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21.
The proclamation further stated that "all of us in this community are cheering for the CU Tigers Baseball Team in the NAIA World Series. "It is further proclaimed that we honor the accomplishments of Coach Beauford Sanders and his coaching staff and the entire team for their many accomplishments in the classroom and community and on the baseball field."

Jeremy Schaap, right, ESPN sports reporter, sits under a make-shift canopy to block the harsh morning sun.
Bryan Fuller used to be a solid bullpen pitcher whose arm the Campbellsville University Tigers could depend on in important games. Today, even though he's still a dependable force out of the pen, he's the face of the Tigers, having become a national television, YouTube, blog celebrity after his 21 innings-in-26-hours performance last week in the Super Regional in Lindenwood, Mo.
But Fuller was taking it all in stride Tuesday as his team gathered for one last home practice before heading to Indianapolis for a flight to Lewiston, Idaho and their first-ever appearance in the Avista NAIA World Series.
"It hasn't affected me one bit," Fuller said as teammates walked by poking good fun at him. "It's been unbelievable. It still hasn't sunk in."
Fuller has a lot on his mind these days. Not only is he a big part of the 24-man Tiger traveling roster, he's planning on getting married in the middle of June, taking a honeymoon and finding gainful employment.
But today he had to prepare himself for an interview with well-known SportsCenter reporter Jeremy Schaap.
Schaap flew in from New York along with a production crew and watched two hours of fielding and batting practice and then interviewed Fuller and head coach Beauford Sanders.
The team seemed to be taking it all in stride as well, like an ESPN reporter shows up every day at practice.
One player joked that Schaap was working on his next movie - The Bryan Fuller Story- with Fuller playing himself and Brad Pitt playing the role of pitching coach Scott Hortness.
"It's interesting because he pitched so well and now they're going to the World Series," Schaap said.
When folks at ESPN first heard about Fuller pitching 21 innings in a two-day span they thought the worst. That the coaching staff didn't care about their players' well being.
"That was our first thought," said Tina Cerbone, an ESPN producer. "We found out different after we talked to them."
Schaap was looking forward to the piece because he loves the amateur, innocent side of sports.
"We're dealing with a pure amateur here," Schaap said before the interview, which was conducted along the first-base line at the Tiger baseball field. "It's just a nice story about something we don't hear about that often."
Cerbone said the piece should air on Thursday during the 11 p.m. SportsCenter broadcast. "It's all good," said a smiling Sanders as he watched his players take batting practice.
When asked if he thought he'd ever see Jeremy Schaap in Campbellsville, he said: "I can honestly say that thought never crossed my mind." Campbellsville was to leave to catch its flight at noon, but Schaap's interview spilled over into the noon hour and then Mayor Brenda Allen and Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers showed up, along with several university staff, to proclaimed May 22 "Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball Day."
Fuller's individual accomplishment could well overshadow the body of work of an entire team - a squad that had just won its first region title and berth in the World Series. But the players were savvy enough to know that what has become good for Bryan Fuller was good for the whole team, the school and the community. The ESPN production crew were presented baseball-style caps from Director of Athletics Rusty Hollingsworth and the audio man said he'd be wearing his while working the Indianapolis 500 this weekend.
You can go out and purchase all kinds of advertising and marketing material, but what Bryan Fuller did in 21 innings was put Campbellsville on a lot of people's maps. And the coach said it certainly would help recruiting.
If only they could have talked Schaap into wearing a university T-shirt during the interview. That would have brought it full circle.

Coach Beauford Sanders, who has more than 835 wins, is taking his Campbellsville Tigers to their first-ever World Series
Campbellsville University baseball coach Beauford Sanders was looking for a confessional after his Tigers won three straight games in the NAIA region in Lindenwood, Mo., and their first-ever berth in the Avista-NAIA World Series.
The Tigers open World Series play on Friday in Lewiston, Idaho with an 8:30 a.m. (11:30 EDT) game against Lee University.
Sanders was trying to explain that he was neither a baseball genius nor the chain gang warden in the Paul Newman movie "Cool Hand Luke."
The coaching move to pitch senior right-hander Bryan Fuller for 21 straight innings with a World Series berth in the balance appeared to be the decision of someone who had a crystal ball in the same pocket with his lineup card. Or, maybe a man looking to pen a new chapter in his next book - The Making of the Next Bionic Arm.
Fuller, playing Newman to the chain gang warden Sanders: "I'm still pitching, boss."
"I can't take any credit for it," admitted Sanders. "You have to trust and count on the guys you work so hard with every day.
"I was against it," the coach said with a grin one could almost perceive even though the interview was conducted by cell phone.
Sanders said his whole mindset after his team drilled Lindenwood 17-8, to set up the first rematch with Kansas Wesleyan, was that the Tigers would play tough and if they got to Friday, "we'd win."
Sanders said his squad never got flustered. Lindenwood led twice, but the Tigers put their runs on the scoreboard too, he said, and finally built a lead.
"Oh, Lord ... our guys were just crushing the ball," said Sanders. "Our offense has been so lethal all year. After that game I said 'man, we're going to win it.'"
Sanders inserted Fuller in the sixth inning of the Lindenwood game and he shut the host team down the rest of the way. But the Tigers faced the prospect of playing Kansas Wesleyan in 45 minutes.
"I knew he (Fuller) wasn't used up in relief. He's in such great shape and his conditioning is excellent."
So, Sanders decided to start Fuller for the first time all season and see how many innings he could go.
"We got that lead and his command was excellent ... He just chopped them down."
One inning led to another and when the smoke cleared, Fuller had a complete-game 11-0 shutout, struck out seven and didn't walk a batter.
After all the congratulatory handshakes Sanders was approached by pitching coach Scott Hortness who had, what seemed to Sanders to be, an odd suggestion.
"Hey, what do you think about starting Bryan (Fuller) tomorrow?"
Before Sanders could spit out the word no, catcher Jimmy Voelker walked by and said: "I think Fuller's arm still has something in it."
The Kansas Wesleyan radio announcers had been praising Fuller's ability to keep the Coyotes off stride with a bevy of off-speed pitches and pin-point control.
Fuller complicated Sanders' decision for a Friday starter by telling his coach: "I'm not going to lie to you, my arm feels great right now."
"And dad-gum-it if he didn't get started again," Sanders said.
Campbellsville's defense got behind the senior iron man and Fuller never let a single count go to three balls.
"Just talking about it gets me emotional," Sanders said nearly 24 hours after his team had drenched him with a water cooler.
"We have worked so hard and come so far. The improvements in our facilities, the scholarships, the weight room, the indoor facility ... and our field. Oh my."
By Saturday afternoon Sanders said he'd been inundated by well-wishers ... phone calls and text messages.
"It just blessed my heart." he said. "People we compete against were calling, former players, people around town."
From the looks of things Sanders has only one thing to worry about as his team prepares for a Tuesday flight to Spokane, Wash., and a bus ride to Lewiston - that Bryan Fuller will get too much rest before he takes the mound again.
Lee University
If you think the competition won't be tough in the Avista-NAIA World Series, get this ...
Campbellsville's opponent (Lee University) is the 9thseed and CU the 8th.
But the Flames just got through dismantling Bellhaven in the finals of their region by a 22-4 score as Lee pounded 27 hits.
Lee University (50-12) is situated in Cleveland ,Tenn., close enough for the two teams to have met. But they did not play each other this year.
Campbellsville (39-10) is listed in the top 20 in 11 NAIA statistical categories, led by its team batting average of .253, 10thin ERA (3.8) and 10thin hits allowed (7.16).
Lee is mentioned in the top 20 in seven of the NAIA statistical categories. The Flames are seventh in ERA (2.97), and eighth in both hits allowed (7.13) and runs allowed (3.79)
Lee is returning to the World Series for the third straight year and with its region final victory accumulated 50 wins for the fourth time in the last five years.

CU starting catcher Jimmy Voelker will have a lot of family in Lewiston, Idaho
Jimmy Voelker grew up in California about five miles from Coloma where in 1838 gold was discovered.
Voelker, the starting catcher for Campbellsville University's soon-to-be-World-Series-participating team, has discovered a new kind of gold. It's the kind money can't buy.
He and his dad, who suffers from Lou Gehrig's Disease, had planned on making the trip this year to Lewiston, Idaho, as spectators. Now, Voelker can relinquish his stadium seat ticket to his mom and his parents can watch their son play.
"He already knew," Voelker said in a telephone interview on Sunday. "He'd been listening to our games on the Internet."
The Tigers' regional title was a dream come true for the whole team, but as far as dreams go, the victory took on a whole new meaning for the young man from Placerville, Calif.
Voelker describes his dad in affectionate terms. The father and son went to the World Series last year as spectators. Voelker has a cousin who lives near Lewis-Clark State College where the World Series is being hosted and she was able to finagle a couple of seats.
"When we were sitting there last year we talked about me maybe being able to play on the field where all the teams were competing," Voelker said.
"It was a dream come true," said Voelker's dad, Jim. "The way it happened. We had his mom, sister and his grandparents here and we were all giving each other high-fives."
Now the whole family can make the 13-hour drive to Lewiston and take in all the action.
Lou Gehrig's Disease affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Voelker says his dad's mind and personality are as good as ever, but his ability to do most things that require something physical are affected. He walks with the assistance of a cane.
Voelker played high school baseball with now CU assistant baseball coach Jake McKinley.
After high school Voelker attended Sacramento City Junior College where he redshirted a year and then played two years. He transferred to Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa, and that's when he found out about his dad's disease.
"When I found that out I had a rough couple of months," Voelker said. "I didn't make good enough grades to play, but continued in school, eventually taking a part-time job as a server at a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Dubuque.
"When Jake found out I wasn't playing, I got a call and the rest is history."
The university filed for a hardship appeal in an effort to get Voelker another year of eligibility, but so far that effort has failed.
So the region title couldn't have come at a better time.
Jim Voelker delivered bread for Orowheat for 29 years and his mom is a realtor. Growing up, Voelker says, his dad was never his coach, but was always there for him in a positive and assuring way.
"He taught me a lot about attitude and respect for the game," Voelker said of his dad. "He would help a lot at practices, but he never wanted to be the coach."
It wasn't anything for his dad to pitch several hours of individual batting practice before a game.
"He never imposed himself, never said anything unless I said something first," Voelker said. "He could talk to me and make me feel better. He was a big part of the religion portion of my game."
So, when Campbellsville takes the field early Friday morning, Jimmy Voelker will have an entire crew of well-wishers in the stands cheering him and his teammates on.
One of them, his dad, has continued to give him the inspiration to play.
"We went last year and it was enjoyable," Voelker said. "But this year I get to represent Campbellsville University as well as him."

Bryan Fuller
Campbellsville University will be making its first trip ever to the NAIA Baseball World Series after a 4-0 win over Kansas Wesleyan on Friday in Lindenwood, Mo.
Riding the pitching arm of senior hurler Bryan Fuller, who threw 21 consecutive innings in a 26-hour span, the Tigers won three straight games after a 5-4 loss to the team they beat for the Region title.
Fuller, from Lewisburg, Ky. pitched the last three innings against Lindenwood University on Thursday afternoon, nine against Kansas Wesleyan Thursday evening in an 11-0 shutout and nine today.
Fuller threw more than 180 pitches in the two-day span.
In the two games against Kansas Wesleyan Fuller gave up 12 hits, four in the 4-0 championship game triumph. He struck out six.
Campbellsville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and that proved to be all the Tigers needed. The Tigers got the majority of their offensive production from the top of their order. Of the Tigers' nine hits, six came from Tyler Derby, Nathan Quesenberry and Nick Bertolucci.
Bertolucci scored twice and had an RBI. Derby and Quesenberry also had RBI.
Campbellsville got solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
In the fourth Bertolucci singled and scored on a two-out single by Quesenberry. In the sixth Colin Bryan, who was hit by a pitch, went to second on Derby's single. He stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Campbellsville enters the World Series with a 40-10 record and beat a team that compiled a 26-game winning streak coming into post-season play.
The game was not without some drama. The Tigers committed two errors in the top of the ninth with one out before shortstop Bertolucci scooped up a grounder, stepped on second and threw to first for a double play. It was the fifth twin killing of the game for the Tigers.
The Avista-NAIA College World Series begins Friday, May 22 in Lewiston, Idaho.

Campbellsville, Kentucky
Jimmy Voelker was a force for the Tigers with 4 hits and 4 RBI
It was a gorgeous afternoon in Campbellsville and it was the perfect setting for two top ten schools to lock horns. The #10 Campbellsville University Tigers came in with an overall record of 31-8, and the Bulldogs of Union College were 37-7 before game time. Both teams battled each other, each having big innings of their own, but in the end, #10 Campbellsville prevailed, winning the game 12-6.
The Tigers were the first to score. Brian Chase (San Jose, California) singled with two outs in the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a bobble in the outfield. Jimmy Voelker (Sacramento, California) followed suit and hit a soft liner into shallow centerfield to plate Chase, giving Campbellsville the 1-0 lead.
For the Tigers, Marc Wilson (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) got the start and came into the game with a 7-0 record. Wilson held the Bulldogs scoreless until the third, when Union put up five runs. A slew of hits and defensive blunders had Union send ten batters to the plate, giving Union a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Campbellsville came to life. Nick Bertolucci (Cupertino, California) ignited the fire with a perfectly executed drag bunt to lead off the inning. Tyler Derby (San Jose, California) and Chris Curley (Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky) followed Bertolucci by drawing walks to load the bases with nobody out. Brian Chase then came up and blooped a single to shallow right to plate one run, and the bases remained loaded. Still with nobody out, Jimmy Voelker stepped in and laced the 0-0 offering into the left center gap, closing the gap to just one. Junior Alex Ponich (British Columbia, Canada) then hit a soft ground ball to second, scoring the run and tying the game. Zach Townsend (Fremont, California) then continued the rally, reaching on an infield single, once again giving Campbellsville the lead. The Tigers would never look back. Nick Bertolucci capped the inning with an opposite field homerun that sliced just inside the left field foul pole. It was Bertolucci's third homer of the season. The Tigers finished the inning, scoring eight runs and led the game 9-5.
Bryan Fuller (Lewisburg, Kentucky) was summoned out of the Tiger Bullpen and pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, picking up his fourth win of the season. Spencer Frantz (Rogue River, Oregon) pitched the final two innings of the game. The Tigers would add three more before the contest was over, winning the game by the final of 12-6. Campbellsville now sits with a record of 32-8.
On the day, the Campbellsville offense was led by Nick Bertolucci, who went 4 for 4 with his third homer of the year. He had 3 RBI on the day and scored two runs. Brian Chase finished the day going 4 for 5, scoring three times, and Jimmy Voelker also was 4 for 5, with 4 RBI.

Brian Chase hit his 10th homer of the year in the sweep
Campbellsville, Kentucky
Ranked #8 in the nation, the Campbellsville Tigers Baseball team got back at it this weekend with a three game conference series against visiting West Virginia Tech. All series long, the Tigers bats came alive and led to a dominating three game sweep over Tech. The Tigers won game one of the series 14-0, the second game 7-1, and the final game 10-4. In the series, Chris Curley blasted his 30th career homerun to become the all time homerun leader in Campbellsville history.
In game one of the series, Ian Pick took the hill and moved to 5-0 in a complete game shutout effort. Pick allowed just two hits in the contest. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. The Tigers only needed four innings of offense before the game was called after five innings of play due to the ten run rule. Offensively, Chris Curley led the charge with a 3 for 3 day where he homered, doubled, and tripled. Zach Townsend was also a perfect 3 for 3 and Logan Smith hit his fourth homer of the season.
On Saturday, the Tigers finished the three game series in a double header. Game one had a similar feel to Friday's game as Senior left hander Marc Wilson moved to 5-0 with a complete game victory. In seven innings pitched, Wilson Scattered five hits, allowing just one run, and striking out seven. Wilson walked zero Golden Bear hitters as he used just 69 pitches in the complete game effort. Offensively, Jimmy Voelker cranked his sixth homer of the season and Brian Chase hit his tenth. Zach Townsend led the way with his second straight 3 for 3 performance and Townsend also had 3 RBIs.
In the series finale, it was once again the Tiger bats that helped complete the series sweep. Starting pitcher Eric Mattos got all the help he would need, moving to 3-0 on the season. Mattos tossed four innings, giving up just one hit and one run. Mattos struck out five on the day, walking just one. Curtis Payne picked up his first save of the season in a long relief appearance. The Tigers used four homeruns to pick up their ten runs. Brian Chase and Chris Curley each homered for the second time in the series. The big story however, was when junior shortstop Nick Bertolucci hit his first collegiate homerun in the third inning down the right field line. Bertolucci was not done though, because he would do the same thing in his next at bat, becoming the sixth Tiger of the season to put together a multi homer game.
The series sweep moves the #8 Tigers into a large lead in the MSC as they are now 13-1 in conference and 27-6 overall. They will look to take this momentum into their next game which will be a conference makeup game at Lindsey Wilson College. Game time will be this Monday night at Lindsey. First pitch is slated for 6:00 P.M.
INSIDE THE SERIES:
Chris Curley; 4 for 8, 2 HR (13). Set all time school record in HR.
Ian Pick; moved to 5-0 on the season with his fourth CG shutout of the season.

Logan Smith had a career best day, going 4 for 4 with a HR and 6 RBI
Campbellsville, Kentucky
Winners of their last four, and eighteen of their last nineteen, The #8 Campbellsville University Baseball team hosted the Bulldogs of Union University on Tuesday in mid-week, non-conference action. The results could not have been any better as the Tigers knocked off Union (RV) 12-1. The game was called after seven innings due to the ten run rule.
The Tigers sent sophomore Alex Tolmachoff out on the mound for his second start of the year. Tolmachoff did more than give the Tigers a chance to win. Tolmachoff scattered five hits in a complete game effort, needing only 68 pitches to notch his fourth win. The Peoria, Arizona native tied Ian Pick with the best record on the team, moving to 4-0.
Offensively, the Tigers did most of their damage in the fourth inning as they put up 8 runs and they sent 12 batters to the plate. Zachary Townsend had two hits in the inning, including a leadoff triple into the right center gap that got the inning going. Logan Smith put the icing on the cake as he launched his second homerun of the year in that inning over the right field wall. Smith had the best game of his collegiate career, going 4 for 4 with 6 runs batted in. Brian Chase also had a big day as he went 3 for 4 and had two RBIs of his own.
Announced just after the game, the NAIA has voted Campbellsville into the #8 spot in the country. They were just three points out of the #7 spot. The Tigers will look to take this momentum into their weekend series with Lindsey Wilson. In conference play, the Tigers still sit with a perfect 9-0 record and are 22-3 overall.

Jimmy Voelker hit his fifth homerun of the year in the four game sweep over Pikeville
Campbellsville, Kentucky
After the second NAIA national polls were released, the Tigers saw themselves with the second highest ranking in the history of their program. Ranked #12 in the nation, the Tigers did exactly what they should have done. They hosted Pikeville College in a four game set at home and pounced on the Bears in dominant fashion, winning all four games and allowing just two runs all weekend. The Tigers now sit at 21-3 overall, and they are all alone in first place in the MSC with a 9-0 record.
The first day of action featured two blowout games where each game was called in the fifth inning thanks to the ten run rule. The Tigers took the first game of the series by a final of 15-1. Ian Pick started for the Tigers, moving to 4-0, as he allowed no earned runs in the outing. Pick had all the help he would need as Chris Curley and Brian Chase blasted homeruns in the game.
Game two was hauntingly similar as the Tigers upended Pikeville, this time the final was 10-0. Marc Wilson moved to 3-0 with the win, tossing his first shutout of the year. Brian Chase homered for the second straight game and Jimmy Voelker hit his fifth homer in the game.
On the second day of the double header weekend, the Tigers completed the four game sweep. Freshman Jake Kutsukos took the mound for the Tigers in game one and pitched well enough for the Tigers to keep it close. Tied 0-0 in the fifth, the Tigers pulled away as Chris Curley hit a grand slam in the six run inning. It was Curley's tenth homer of the year. Bryan Fuller picked up the win in relief, and he moved to 3-0 on the year.
In the final game of the series, Eric Mattos took the hill and followed suit with all of the other Tiger starters. Mattos had perhaps the most dominant outing of the weekend, tossing six innings, and allowing no runs on two hits. Mattos moved to 2-0 with the win.
Baseball now sits with a 21-3 record and they will use mid week tuneups against Union University tomorrow and they will host Indiana University Southeast on Wednesday. First pitch tomorrow at Tiger Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 P.M.

Ian Pick needed just 68 pitches to throw a complete game shutout against Georgetown last week
Campbellsville, Kentucky
The Campbellsville University Tiger Baseball team is off to a hot start to say the least. They are now sitting with an overall record of 15-2 and they are a perfect 4-0 in MSC play. In the four game series against Georgetown, the Tigers consistently found themselves in tight pitching duels and as a pitching staff, they had a 0.50 ERA on the weekend. A major contributor to this was Ian Pick, who dominated in his outing against Georgetown, earning him Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
In his outing against Georgetown, Pick had a record setting day for the Tigers. Not only did he toss a complete game shutout, he only needed 68 pitches to do so. On top of that, Pick scattered just three hits and no Georgetown player ever reached second base. On the day, Pick punched out four opposing hitters and did not even have a three ball count to any hitter.
With the outing, Pick moved to 2-0 on the season, and his ERA is still 0.00. The Tigers were 6-0 last week and are 2-0 already this week. They will travel to Williamsburg this weekend to take on rival University of the Cumberlands this weekend in a four game series.

Chris Curley blasts 3 homeruns in game one of the double header. Curley now leads the MSC in round trippers.
New Albany, Indiana
For lovers of offensive Baseball games, yesterday's game was a must see. 1st place Campbellsville traveled to Indiana University Southeast to play the Grenadiers in mid-week action and the bats were hot to say the least. All the Tigers did was score 39 runs in the two games, and they used 41 hits to do so. They won the first game in what looked like a Football score by a final of 21-7, and finished the two game sweep with an 18-3 victory.
The Tigers wasted no time to start roping the ball early and often. In the first inning, Colin Bryan (San Jose, California) drew a lead off walk Tyler Derby (San Jose, California) singled to right. Chris Curley (Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky) then came up with two runners on and blasted a 1-1 breaking ball over the scoreboard in left field to put the Tigers up 3-0. Curley's day had just begun.
After putting up a four spot in the top of the first, IUS answered back with a run of their own in the bottom. The Tigers however decided to one up their first inning performance and this time, put up five runs in the second inning. Again, it was a Chris Curley homerun that capped the inning, but this time, it was a 3-2 fastball that Curley drove the other way. Curley still wasn't finished.
With Campbellsville leading 14-7 in the sixth, they would put it away for good. This time, to no surprise it was again Curley that blasted his third homerun of the game to cap the 6 run inning. The final was 21-7. Bryan Fuller picked up the win, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Game two had a similar theme, as the Tigers got going early and never looked back. Freshman Justin Berman (Jupiter, Florida) took the mound in his first college start and tossed three solid innings. Berman got more run support than he needed though as the Tigers this time provided 18 runs of support. They were led by Brian Chase (San Jose, California) who was 4 for 5 with his 6th homerun of the year.
Both the offense and pitching are clicking on all cylinders right now, and it showed after these games. As of right now, every starter in the Tiger lineup is batting over .300, with four players batting over .400.
Big hitters on the day included:-Chris Curley (6 for 9, 3 HR, 11 RBI)
-Jimmy Voelker (6 for 8, 5 RBI, 5 R)
-Tyler Derby (4 for 5, RBI, 3 R)
-Brian Chase (6 for 10, HR, 5 RBI, 6 R)
-Alex Ponich (4 for 7, 5 RBI, 4 R)
On the game, Head Coach Beauford Sanders remarked, "In all my years of coaching, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a day with so much offense and it was all thanks to our good approaches at the plate."
The Tigers will look to carry their momentum into this weekend which will be their biggest series of the year so far. They will take on The University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg in a four game series. Campbellsville sits at 15-2 overall, 4-0 MSC...Which Cumberlands is 9-4-1 overall, and 4-0 in MSC play.
Sanders Earns Career Victory #800
Fri, Feb 20, 2009 - [Baseball]
Beauford Sanders notches win
#800 for his coachin career.
On a day that saw the Tigers take a 7-1 lead going into the 5th inning, lose the lead in the 6th inning where visiting Indiana Tech put up a 7 spot to take the lead, the Tigers rebound to tie it in the bottom of the sixth, then win it in the bottom of the 7th on sacrifice fly. All this drama for Head Coach, Beauford Sanders to win his 800th career coaching victory. Wouldn't have it any other way!!!
Junior first baseman, Bryan Chase had a good day, going 2 for 4, with a homerun, and 2 RBI. Solid pitching performance for starter Marc Wilson, coming out with a 7-1 lead. Unfortunately, it didn't work out to a win for Wilson, but it did work itself out to a team victory, a historic one at that.

Head Coach Beauford Sanders won his 799th game today against Asbury
Campbellsville, Kentucky
After starting the 2009 season with a bang, the Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball team managed a split today against visiting Asbury College. It would an understatement to say game one resembled a bad dream as the Tigers fell 12-0, but they did rebound and salvage the split as they won the second game by a final of 3-2.
In the first game of the double header, Asbury had a massive second inning and it was more than enough. A combination of a grandslam, three walks, and a hits batsmen led to a seven run inning for the Eagles. The seven runs were plenty and Asbury added five more throughout the game and followed by shutting out the bats. No Tiger offensive player had multiple hits.
After facing defeat, Campbellsville went on to prevail in game two. This one was a pitcher's duel though, as freshman Jake Kutsukos (Jupiter, Florida) made the first start of his college career. Kutsukos was brilliant in 5.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit and two runs.
Down 2-1 in the sixth inning, Tyler Derby (San Jose, California) led off the inning with a walk. With Derby on first, the table was set for Chris Curley (Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky). With a 1-1 count, Curley laced his third homerun of the year to left, to give the Tigers the lead.
Junior Ian Pick (Santa Clara, California) came on to close the game down allowing no hits and striking out one to lock his first save of the year.
Campbellsville now sits with an overall record of 4-2 and they will host three teams in their annual Cancer Classic Tournament this upcoming weekend. Head Coach Beauford Sanders is currently sitting at 799 wins and will go for win number 800 this weekend.

Logan Smith broke the game open in the fifth inning of game one with his 2 RBI double
Montgomery, Alabama
Just less than 24 hours after dominating #15 Auburn University Montgomery, the Campbellsville University Tigers Baseball team set out to Faulkner University to complete their four game road trip. Faulkner (recieved votes nationally) came ready to battle and the two teams would go back and forth all day. Campbellsville went on to win the first game 6-3, and Faulkner would make a late comeback in game two to give the Tigers their first loss of the season by a score of 7-3.
In game one, the Tigers got started immediately. Right fielder Colin Bryan (San Jose, California) led the game off with a single up the middle. Two pitches later, the Tigers called a hit and run and junior Tyler Derby (Los Gatos, California) laced a double off the right center field wall scoring Bryan. The 1-0 lead would hold until the third inning when Faulkner scored three runs on one swing of the bat.
Down 3-1 in the fifth, Campbellsville prevailed. With the bases loaded and one out, Jimmy Voelker (Placerville, California) came up and hit a slow roller to third. The funny spin on the ball was too much for the third baseman to handle and Campbellsville closed the gap by one. Three pitches later, sophomore Logan Smith (Campbellsville, Kentucky) laced a double into the right center gap giving the Tigers the lead. They would never look back, going on to win the game 6-3.
Eric Mattos (San Jose, California) started the game for the Tigers and pitched them into the fourth inning. Alex Tolmachoff (Peoria, Arizona) relieved Mattos and picked up his first win of the season. Jon Bourassa (Prince George, British Columbia) pitched a perfect ninth to grab his first save of the season.
Game two had a similar feel as game one, only this time the Tigers were on the wrong end of the outcome. The Tigers jumped out to a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Brian Chase's (San Jose, California) two run homer to center field. Faulkner battled right back to tie the game at two a piece in the bottom of the frame.
In the top of the fourth, Campbellsville would regain the lead on a Jimmy Voelker RBI single to left. It was Voelkers team high 13th RBI in four games.
Faulkner grabbed all the momentum back though in the bottom of the fifth. A combination of two hits, two errors, and two hits batsmen led to a five run inning giving the Eagles the 7-3 victory.
The 2009 season as a whole has started off very well for Campbellsville. They now sit with a record of 3-1 and will have their home opener tomorrow as they will host Asbury College. Game time for the double header is scheduled for 1:00 PM.

The Tigers are coming off a season where they were the MSC Tournament champions.
If there is one certainty, it is that the Campbellsville University Baseball team has a lot of momentum going for them, and the season hasn't even started. Every year since 2003, the Tigers have appeared in the Regionals, and are have taken a form of an MSC Championship for four straight seasons. Despite recent and past success, many new faces will be on the field this year for the Tigers. A slew of Junior College transfers compliment a handful of seniors and they will go to battle this weekend in Montgomery, Alabama.
At this point of the Tigers' preparation for the '09 season, 19th year Head Coach Beauford Sanders said, "Of the three main components of the game, offense, defense, and pitching; pitching and defense have probably been our strongest points for the past several years. This season due to injuries, lack of experience, and an academic casualty, our offense and defense as of now are stronger."
Sanders went on to say, "A trademark of our team over the years has been solid 'team chemistry' and once again that appears to be very true. If our pitching arrives by season's end we should be one of the better teams within the region."
This year's team appears to have a good blend of talent and character and they all expect big things. Of the group of guys, Sanders added, "We are a good team today and we'll be a good team tomorrow. The question is, are we willing to commit to becoming a great team? This group has a legitimate chance to become great. That's the bottom line."
In the most recent polls, the Tigers were picked to come in 2nd place in the MSC, falling just one vote behind favorite University of the Cumberlands which placed 1st.
Due to rain, the Tigers will now open up against #18 Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama. They will play a double header against the Senators who currently sit with a record of 5-1. The next day, they will travel to Faulkner University (RV) and complete their four game road trip. The starting rotation for the Tigers will include new faces with one returner. The projected rotation for the week is:
Game 1; Marc Wilson, LHP. (2-1, 3.94 ERA in 2008 for Campbellsville)
Game 2; Ian Pick, RHP (10-2, 3.03 ERA in 2008 at West Valley CC (CA))
Game 3; Eric Mattos, RHP (5-4, 3.80 ERA in 2007 at SJCC (CA))
Game 4; Tyler Derby, LHP (1-0, 3.54 ERA in 2008 at West Valley (CA)
The start time for the double header Saturday should be announced sometime today and will updated as soon as it is announced. Stay tuned for game results this weekend.
Head Coach Beauford Sanders has referred to this year's fall ball as a huge success.
After a six week fall season, the Campbellsville Tiger Baseball team will now go into their individual work to prepare for their season opener in February. Head Coach Beauford Sanders was especially pleased with the team's ability to compete on the field and feels the team worked very well as a unit. "We have a lot of new guys and some solid returners this year. Every guy from top to bottom in the program worked hard and bought into what the coaching staff is trying to get teach."
The team kicked the fall off with their first annual Tiger Baseball Tennis Tournament. The Tennis tournament bracketed all players in the program in a single elimination tournament. The championship match featured new comers Jimmy Voelker (Sacramento, California) and Ryan Kerstens (Manitoba, Canada). Kerstens knocked off Voelker in dominating fashion as the true freshman swept the match.
After weeks of practice and intrasquads, the Tigers finished their fall with a maroon-black world series. Team captains Nathan Quesenberry (Maroon) and Marc Wilson (Black) drafted their respective teams and the series concluded late last week. Maroon ended up winning the series 2-1 in a well played series. Game one was taken by Maroon as senior first baseman Nick Smith (Elizabethtown, Kentucky) was named player of the game with his 3 for 3 performance. With their backs against the wall, Black rebounded winning two by a final of 2-1. Juco transfer Tyler Derby (San Jose, California) was named game two's MVP as he was 2 for 3, he stole home, and he threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save. Maroon sealed the deal in game three in dominant fashion behind the strong pitching performance of Eric Staples (Somerset, Kentucky) who was named player of the game. The junior right hander went six strong innings, allowing two earned runs en route to the win.
As the players continue their individual work, Tiger fans...be on the lookout. The Tiger Baseball team will be putting on their fifth annual TALENT SHOW right here in the heart of Campbellsville. Stay tuned as the date, time, and location will be announced later this week.
Head Coach Beauford Sanders announced the signing of Alex Tolmachoff last week.
19th year Head Coach Beauford Sanders announced the signing of Right Handed Pitcher Alex Tolmachoff last weekend. The righty will transfer in as a sophomore after playing his Freshman season at Bethany University (CA). The Phoenix, Arizona native will certainly be a huge help to the Tigers after having a true freshman year that teetered on dominant for the Bruins out west.
The 6 foot, 180 pounder made twelve starts for Bethany in the 2008 season, helping lead the Bruins to their second best finish in school history. As the undisputed staff ace, Tolmachoff finished the year with 4-1 record and a staunch 2.24 ERA. In that time, he walked less than one batter per nine innings and averaged a strikeout per two innings.
Tolmachoff is a crafty sinker-baller with good breaking ball. He will arrive in early January with the rest of the squad following winter break.
Coach Sanders on the signing of Alex Tolmachoff: "We look forward to having Alex in the program. He is a great character guy that will undoubtedly help us. He dominated in Region 2 last year, and we look for him to do the same for us."

19th year Head Coach Beauford Sanders has announced the 2009 Campbellsville University baseball schedule has been released. It is one of the most challenging schedules yet for the Tigers, as they will battle eleven opponents whom were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 at some time in 2008. Five of the teams have been NAIA World Series participants in the past two years (Cumberland University, Walsh University, Spring Arbor University, and Lindenwood University in 2007; and Union College and Spring Arbor University in 2008). Spencer Frantz is another Junior College signee that could make an instant impact.
Three more recruits have announced their commitments to play baseball at Campbellsville University in the 2008-2009 school year. Two more pitchers will join the staff and another position player will come on board. All three of the signees are junior college transfers and will all be expected to make instant impacts. The total number of off season signees is up to 15 players, with 13 of those players transferring from junior colleges. Again, three different states are represented in this bunch (California, Florida, and Oregon). The three recruits are:
Utility man Spencer Frantz will join the Tiger's mix and will be a welcomed addition. He is known as being an extremely versatile player as he is capable of playing all eight defensive positions. Primarily an infielder, Frantz can also be an option as a corner outfielder and can catch. He played his freshman year at Bethany University (CA) where he saw most of his action at third base. He then played his sophomore season at Chemekita and saw time at short and first.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Spencer Frantz: "I am very impressed with Spencer on all levels. His primary concern is what is best for the team and that is why I know he will be a great fit for us. He is a great athlete and his versatility will be welcomed."
Skylar Brewar, RHP/OF, Skyline Community College, Pacifica, California:
Skylar Brewar has committed to the Tigers for the 2009 season after serving as duel player for Skyline Community College. Prior to his sophomore season, Brewar pitched at NCAA Div-1 Sacramento State. Brewar is 6-4, 215 pounds and offers a good hard fast ball that touches 90 mph. He will also compete for a spot in the outfield for the Tigers as he possesses tremendous power.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Skylar Brewar: "The sky is the limit for Skylar. He has a great build and will continue to get better. We expect him to help us a great deal on the mound and with the bat."
Justin Berman, LHP, Palm Beach Community College, Palm Beach, Florida:
The coaching staff is thrilled to announce the signing of Justin Berman as he will add even more depth to an already deep pitching staff. The lefty will transfer after playing at Palm Beach Community College (FL). Berman sits in the mid to upper 80's and will be able to compete for a great deal of time on the mound.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Justin Berman: "Adding another lefty to the mix is huge for us as we finish up recruiting. Justin has a live arm and has good stuff. He will get better with time and we anticipate him being a difference maker right away."

Lefty Dave Masinter could spearhead the rotation in 2009
It was announced yesterday that the Tiger pitching staff would become even deeper in 2009 with the addition of three more pitchers. Head Coach Beauford Sanders announced that the commitments of one high school, one junior college, and one four year player have been made. They all come from different backgrounds and they are all from three different states. Sanders says this trio is solid and all three of them will have the chance to be impact players next season. The total number of commitments is now up to 13. 10 Junior College players, 1 four year transfer, and 2 high school players are all in the mix. The three new additions are:
Ryan Branscum, RHP, Volunteer State Junior College, Gallatin, Tennessee
Ryan Branscum will be a Tiger in 2009 after playing two seasons at Volunteer State JC in Tennessee. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 220 lbs, and can be used in multiple roles. As a sophomore for the Pioneers, Branscum appeared in 13 games, while making 4 starts. He compiled a 4-2 record and struck out 43 batters in 44 innings of work. He will be able to help the Tigers immediately with a good hard fastball and good off speed stuff.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Ryan Branscum: "We're not sure what role Ryan will be in next year, but one thing we're sure of is that he will help our program right away. He is a competitor that will do well either as a starter or a reliever. He's a team guy and will be a perfect fit."
David Masinter, LHP, Lewis-Clark State College, Los Gatos, California
After taking a medical red shirt in 2008, big left hander Dave Masinter will transfer to Campbellsville and don the Tiger uniform in 2009. Prior to signing with LC State, Masinter played Junior College ball at West Valley College in Lost Gatos, CA. and is now the fourth West Valley player to sign with Campbellsville. In his sophomore year with WVC, Masinter served as a weekend starter and closed when he wasn't starting. He finished with a 7-3 record and was a perfect 5 for 5 in save opportunities. He also averaged a little better than a strikeout per inning. His fastball is in the upper 80's, he can touch the low 90's, and his off speed stuff teeters on dominant.
-Coach Sanders of the signing of Dave Masinter: "The addition of Dave to our mix is going to help us immensely. He has great stuff and should be one of the region's best pitchers. He knows how to pitch and should be a welcomed addition to our rotation."
Ryan Watson, RHP, Bowling Green, Kentucky
Ryan Watson becomes the second high school player to commit to play Baseball for the Tigers in 2009. The second high school pitcher, Watson played his prep ball in Bowling Green and worked under former Tiger All-American Donnie Johnson. Watson will have a legitimate shot as a freshman to see significant time for the Tigers with a firm fastball and a great changeup. He is mature well beyond his years and should be a perfect fit into the Tiger Baseball family.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Ryan Watson: "Ryan will be a perfect fit next year. As a freshman, he will have a shot to get right in the mix and compete on the hill for us. He is very mature and he is a hard worker, both attributes that fit right into our program.

Bertolucci was the starting shortstop for West Valley College who finished #3 in California
Head Coach Beauford Sanders announced yesterday that shortstop Nick Bertolucci would be joining the Tiger Baseball program in 2009. Sanders is thrilled about the addition of Bertolucci who not only brings a lot to the table offensively, many coaches and scouts on the west coast have reffered to Bertolucci as one of the state's finest defensive shortstops. He is the third player to sign out of West Valley Community College (Los Gatos, CA) joining teammates Ian Pick and Tyler Derby. Bertolucci is 5'10, 165 pounds and he hits from the left side. He has gap to gap power and is a major base stealing threat.
Bertolucci served as West Valley's sparkplug in their run during the state championship. He was their everyday shortstop in the state tournament and made just one error in the postseason where West Valley made it to the state's final four. Offensively, he was their best weapon as he was 15 for 30, good for a .500 batting average. In regional play, he hit just under .700. Bertolucci also pitchced for West Valley. He served out of the Viking bullpen with a mid 80's fastball.
Bertolucci will be looked at to make an instant impact with the bat and defensively in the Tiger lineup in 2009.
-Coach Sanders on the signing of Nick Bertolucci: "Adding Berto is huge for the program. He is very consistent defensively and he can do a lot with the bat. He runs as well as anyone we have signed and should be a sparkplug in our lineup."
Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 2:32 PM - [Baseball] - article courtesy of Campbellsville U. Sports Info.
Entering his 19th year at the helm, Head Coach Beauford Sanders announced the signing of eight new players.
It was announced today that Campbellsville Baseball will be adding eight recruits to the program, starting in the fall of 2008. The recruiting class is marked by speed offensively and includes a handful of pitchers that will be immediate difference makers. Head Coach Beauford Sanders has referred to this recruiting as exceptional as speed and power are the primary makeup . The class includes seven Community College Transfers and one High School signee. The eight recruits makes up for a big portion of the '08-'09 signees, but there are still a few more players the Tigers hope to ink in the coming summer months. Below is information about each of the players signed:
Colin Bryan, 2B/SS, Mission College, San Jose, California The Tigers will welcome switch hitting second baseman Colin Bryan to the mix in 2009 and he should see significant time seeing that he is extremely versatile. In 2008, Bryan finished with a .404 batting average, which was second highest in the Coast Conference North earning him first team all-conference honors. Bryan also led the Saints in hits, doubles, and RBIs on top of having the highest fielding percentage on the team. The switch hitter was Mission's every day number two or three hitter.
-Coach Sanders on Colin Bryan: "We are excited to have Colin because he is so versatile. He can play five different positions on defense and will be in the middle infield mix. He runs well and has good bat control."
Tyler Derby, 1B/LHP, West Valley College, Los Gatos, California Two way standout Tyler Derby will don the Tiger uniform in 2009 and it is projected he will be an impact player right off the bat. While at West Valley College, Derby proved to be one of the best players in California. He finished the season with a .404 batting average as West Valley's everyday first baseman. Defensively, Derby finished with a .995 fielding percentage at first base. A first team all conference selection, Derby also has great speed as he stole the second most bases for West Valley. On the mound, Derby works in the mid to upper 80's and averaged 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings for the Vikings. His efforts led West Valley to #9 national rating and they finished #3 in California. Prior to signing with Campbellsville, Derby was being recruited heavily by Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State.
-Coach Sanders on Tyler Derby: "We are thrilled about Tyler's decision to come to Campbellsville. We expect great things at first base and on the mound. He is a verbal leader that has great wheels and will be a likely candidate to hit in the middle of our lineup."
Erik Fortner, LHP, Cincinnati, Ohio Joining the pitching staff in 2009, Erik Fortner has perhaps the highest ceiling in the class. The only high school signee at the moment, Fortner stands at 6'6 and has good velocity from the left side. Multiple scouts have projected Fortner as one of the best left handed arms coming out of the Cincinnati area. He will have a legitimate chance to be a difference maker as a freshman.
-Coach Sanders on Erik Fortner: "Erik has a high ceiling and we are projecting him to be a major contributor as a freshman. We expect big things right away, and we are also aware that he will only get better as time passes."
Ian Pick, RHP, West Valley College, San Jose, California Campbellsville will warmly welcome the addition of big time right hander Ian Pick in 2009. Standing at 6'6, 225 pounds, Pick brings an electric fastball to the Tigers rotation. He is projected to be at the top of the 2009 weekend rotation as his fastball sits at 87-89 mph, and tops out at 92. Pick led West Valley's charge to the final four in 2008 as he finished with a 12-2 record and his ERA was a staunch 2.75. Pick has made vast improvements in the last year and should shine for the Tigers over the next two years.
-Coach Sanders on Ian Pick: "I expect Ian to be the guy next year. He has great stuff that should anchor our rotation. If all goes as planned, he should be one of the conference's best arms."
Josh Shroeder, RHP, Mission College, Santa Clara, California Sinker baller Josh Shroeder will join the Tiger's rotation in 2009 after serving as Mission College's number one starter for the last two years. He throws from a low three quarter arm slot and sits in the mid to upper 80's. He has flashed 90 on multiple occasions. The 6'2 righty finished the 2008 season throwing 58.2 innings and allowing just one homerun to go along with being the team leader in opposing batting average as opposing hitters hit just .249.
-Coach Sanders on Josh Shroeder: "I see Josh thriving in our program. He has great stuff and knows how to pitch. He put up great numbers at Mission and we expect nothing less next year."
Dillon Tindall, UTIL, Mission College, Campbell, California Tiger Baseball is thrilled about the signing of Dillon Tindall as he has a wide array of talents to bring to the table. Known for his homerun power, Tindall showed off his speed in 2008 as well. As a member of the Saints, Tindall led the Coast Conference North in homeruns and also led his team in stolen bases. As a member of the Tigers, Tindal provides all five tools and offers a great deal of versatility. He can play in the outfield or corner infield positions. On top of being an offensive force, Tindall can also log innings on the mound with an upper 80's fastball.
-Coach Sanders on Dillon Tindall: "Dillon has the potential to be a major force in the MSC. As he shortens his stroke, he will hit even more homeruns and increase his on base percentage. He can flat out fly and I love the intensity he plays with."
Zach Townsend, OF, Ohlone College, Freemont, California The speedy Zach Townsend will join the Tiger outfield in 2009 after being a member of the Ohlone Renegades. While at Ohlone, Townsend was the everyday centerfielder and was a threat with the bat and on the bases. Townsend was known as one the Coast Conference's fastest players and showed pop with his bat late in the season. Defensively, Townsend was phenomenal for the Renegades as he led the team in fielding percentage, making just one error. Townsend will compete for an everyday role in the Tiger outfield.
-Coach Sanders on Zach Townsend: "Zach will be a perfect fit for our program. He is aggressive, fast, and scrappy. He has gap to gap power and will be a major base stealing threat. Defensively, Zach is second to none."
Jimmy Voelker, C, Sacramento City College, Sacramento, California Standing at an imposing 6'3, 220 pounds, Jimmy Voelker will join Logan Smith in the Tiger's catching duo. In 2007 Voelker was national power Sac City's catcher helping lead them to the state championship game. Voelker has what many call a big league arm behind the plate, throwing a consistent 1.8 down to second. Offensively, Voelker has big time power and should be a major threat in the Tiger's lineup. Voelker and Logan Smith will likely split up time at catcher and DH.
-Coach Sanders on Jimmy Voelker: "Jimmy gives us a great 1-2 punch behind the plate and he will also see time in the DH role. He has a great presence about him and will be a great leader. He is great with pitchers and he is a very intelligent young man."

Story by Bryan Blair.
Georgetown, KY - Campbellsville came out firing in the first inning, when senior Temple Macdonald hit a three-run homer to take and keep the lead in the Tigers' 6-2 win over Georgetown in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday.
The game was a rematch of yesterday's marathon that took 16 innings before Georgetown emerged with an 8-6 win but Saturday was different.
Campbellsville's homerun parade continued with Jason Beale's solo homerun in the seventh and two-run homer in the ninth.
Georgetown sent in reliever Kyle Lucal to help starter Steven Mavroles in the seventh inning and committed no errors on the night but couldn't stop the offensive run of their conference rival.
Campbellsville's Bryan Fuller got the win in relief of Marc Wilson, who faced 18 batters and giving up five of Georgetown's seven hits on the night. However, Georgetown left seven runners on base and couldn't capitalize when needed. Jeff Duda picked up his second save of the day and fourth of the season.

"Logan is quality catcher who will be an asset to the team, immediately. He is very strong defensively, with a strong arm. He has pop in his bat and will use all fields. May 10, 2007 Tigers to Play in Regional Championship
After losing earlier in the day in the winners bracket final to Cumberland University 3-2, the Tigers beat Trevecca Nazarene 8-3 to reach the championship game tomorrow.
They will face Cumberland University for the right to play in the NAIA Super Regionals. The Tigers will have to win twice in order to have the opportunity.
May 9, 2007 9th Inning Comeback
It was a pitchers duel for the majority of the game until the 9th inning. Tigers Chris Lemay and Trevecca's Barrett Brown both were dominating all night.
Trevecca were able to capitalize on a lead off walk and an error to put up a deuce in the top of the 9th inning. This gave them a 2 run lead going to the bottom of the ninth. Trojans Barrett Brown who struck out 11 batters, walked the first two hitters in the ninth. A sacrifice moved the runners to second and third. Next batter was Jason Neufeld who singled to deep short, scoring one and moving the runner to 3rd base. Jason Beale grounded to the hole at second and the Trojans were not able to turn the double play on the speedy Beale. A matter of fact the Trojans threw the ball in the dugout, giving Beale 2nd base. This brought up the #9 hitter, Nathan Quesenberry who hit a line drive off of the Trojans ace closer's ankle. The ball bounced into foul territory, giving Beale the opportunity to score from 2nd base, giving the Tigers the victory.
The victory means the Tigers will face Cumberland University in the Winners' Bracket final. The two undefeated teams will meet at 12 noon tomorrow. The winner will advance to the Region XI final and would have to be beat twice.
May 9, 2007 More Post-Season Honors
For the first time, NAIA honors baseball players with the Rawlings Gold Glove Award. Two Tigers were honored in the Mid-South Conference; Temple Macdonald in right field and Hector Urbaneja at shortstop. Macdonald was also honored as the Gold Glove recipient for Region XI.
Chris Curley was selected to the NAIA All-Region XI team. He will now be a finalist for the NAIA All-American team.
May 6, 2007 NAIA Regional Tournament Schedule
The Tigers will enter the NAIA Region XI Tournament as the #3 seed and will face, for the 8th time this season and 4th game in a row, Lindsey Wilson College. This game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8th, 3:30pm at Georgetown College. The seeding is as follows:
#1 Cumberland University #2 Trevecca Nazarene University #3 Campbellsville University #4 Lindsey Wilson College #5 Georgetown College #6 Crichton University

May 2, 2007 Tigers Blow 4-Run Lead
One strike from a three-peat of the MSC Tournament Championship, the Tigers blow 4-run lead to Lindsey Wilson. The loss means a second game to decide the MSC Tournament Championship.
Missed opportunities, offensively, early in the game allowed LWC to hang around. Walks to the bottom of the order by the pitching staff allowed them to score in the last two innings. Not challenging the bottom of the order hurt them. LWC has a couple of guys at the top who can hurt you, and did. A walk-off grand slam to the lead off hitter ended the game.
The Tigers will have to rebound tomorrow, as it is for all the marbles. Stay tuned.
May 1, 2007 Tigers Look to Three-Peat
After an undefeated weekend at the conference tournament this weekend, the Tigers, for the third year in a row, will host the championship game on Wednesday, May 2 at Tiger Field, starting at 2pm.
The Tigers opened the MSC tournament with a win on Thursday against West Virginia Tech, 12-2. On Friday, they knocked off University of the Cumberlands, 10-2. And today they won the winners bracket by defeating Lindsey Wilson College, 11-5.
The opponent for the championship game is Lindsey Wilson College.

April 9, 2007 Macdonald, Curley, Earn MSC Honors
Temple Macdonald earned MSC Player of the Week. Temple batted .400 last week for the Tigers, including extra base hits of 3 doubles and a home run. He scored 6 runs on the week, had 6 RBI's and also received 4 walks.
Chris Curley earned MSC Pitcher of the Week. Chris threw a complete-game, two-hitter against West Virginia Tech last weekend. He had 6 strikeouts and allowed no free passes in the 4-1 win.
April 8, 2007 Curley's Streak Ends at 21 Games
Chris Curley may be a freshman, but he has been hitting like a seasoned upperclassman. Curley, who hails from Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky is leading the Mid-South Conference in batting average for the last few weeks. On the season he is hitting .417, with 11 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 36 RBI. He has a slugging percentage of .614 and an on-base percentage of .479.
Heading into today's Mid-South doubleheader with West Virginia Tech, Curley had hit in 20 consecutive games, dating back to March 13. In the first game of today's doubleheader, he doubled in the 4th inning, extending the streak to 21 games. It ended in the second game, going 0 for 2. During the streak, he batted .487, with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homeruns, and 23 RBI.
Campbellsville University hadn't kept stats on hitting streaks, but we believe this may be one of the longest in the history of the program. Congratulations Chris! Now you are ready to begin another chapter.
April 4, 2007
The game versus Trevecca Nazarene scheduled for 3pm today has been cancelled due to field conditioning stemming from last nights storm. No make up date has been scheduled. The Tigers next action will be this weekend for a MSC match-up with West Virginia Tech. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1pm at Tiger Stadium.

NORTHWOODS LEAGUE ANNOUNCES
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BORDER CATS INK FIVE CANADIANS
The Thunder Bay Border Cats announced the signing of five Canadian players for the upcoming 2007 Northwoods League season.
Morgan Carlile, Cory Hall, Chris Lemay and brothers Andrew and Temple MacDonald have all committed to play for the Border Cats this summer, bringing plenty of homegrown flavor to the roster.
“I am excited to have these five Canadian born players suiting up for us this year,” said Border Cats general manager Greg Balec. “Canadian kids are always a big hit with our fans as well as with the American players in the clubhouse” added Balec.
Carlile, a junior from Summerside, PEI, is a 6’5” 210 pound left handed pitcher with Campbellsville (KY) University whose name will ring familiar with Cats fans. Morgan was a part of the Border Cats roster that captured the 2005 Northwoods League Championship. He was also a member of the 2004 Canadian National Junior Team and was drafted by the New York Mets in the MLB Amateur Draft in 2004.
Hall, a 6’2” 215 pound freshman right handed pitcher who hails from Regina, SK, currently suits up with Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. This past fall Cory pitched Team Canada to a bronze medal at the 2006 World Junior Baseball Championships in Sancti, Cuba, going 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA in the tournament. Hall was recently nominated in the Youth Male Category at the Saskatchewan Sports Awards and is no stranger to Port Arthur Stadium having pitched for Team Saskatchewan in the 2004 Baseball Canada Cup.
Lemay, who hails from Winnipeg, MB, is a 6’2” 185 pound junior left handed pitcher with Campbellsville (KY) University and a 33rd round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005.
Temple Macdonald, a 6’1” 215 pound junior outfielder from Charlottetown, PEI also from Campbellsville (KY) University is no stranger to summer ball, having spent the 2005 summer with the Lethbridge Bulls of the Western Major Baseball League.
Andrew Macdonald, who suits up for the Niagara University Purple Eagles, is a 5’11” 205 pound infielder who hails from Charlottetown, PEI. Andrew has earned Second Team All-Conference honors in 2005 and 2006.
March 17, 2007 Carlile Throws No-No Mid-South Conference action began yesterday and the Tigers got off to a great start in game 1. Morgan Carlile, junior, from Summerside, PEI, Canada, no-hit the Tigers of Georgetown College, striking out 5 and walking just one. Carlile had all of his pitches working, especially his change-up. He kept Georgetown hitters off balance all day, getting many easy pop-ups. Temple Macdonald provided all the offense the Tigers needed with a 3-run homerun in the 3rd inning. From then on, it was all Carlile. He now moves to 3 and 1 on the season, with an era of 1.82. The Tigers won game 1, 5-0.
The second game did not go quite as well as they were soundly beaten 12-5. Chris Curley and Jason Beale each homered in game 2, but that was all the offense they could muster. The two teams will battle again today, beginning at 12 noon. The Tigers will send 3 and 1, Chris Lemay to the mound in game 1, and 2 and 0, Jason Neufeld in game 2. The Tigers are currently 16 and 5 on the season, 1 and 1 in conference play.

February 16, 2007 Season Preview
The 07 version of Tiger Baseball will be younger and less experienced when opening day rolls around. Head Coach Beauford Sanders though has a good “feeling” about this unproven squad. “Truthfully our team chemistry and day to day approach toward practice and attention to responsibilities have been superior to last season when we had (14) seniors. We have (4) seniors this year and these four are good examples for everyone else to follow! We could experience some big bumps along the road as our season unfolds but I believe if the guys will stick together, not panic or get frustrated that we could be one of the better teams in Region XI come May 1.
First Base We have a very good battle here between Soph. Nick Smith and transfer Reid Carlson. Both are big and strong , one RH and one LH. Both are legit in DH consideration too. Reid will probably get the nod but don’t count Nick out. Both of these guys need to put up offensieve production! Curtis Payne a freshman is our No. 3 and adds another bat off our bench.
Second Base Andrew Carroll is our starting second basemen. In my opinion he was our MVP last year. Due to Andrews’ versatility and need to help us at other positions Nathan Quesenberry should contribute a lot at second base and if he improves his hitting could become an excellent all around infielder. Bryan Fuller will provide middle infield depth for us along the with his mound work.
ShortStop Hector Urbaneja is our projected starter and he needs to have a steady consistent defensive effort for us to do well this year.He has the potential but he needs to realize that! Chase Ezell and Andrew Carroll will be our primary back-ups.
Third Base Clayton Howell, if he gets his eligibility for this year, will be a big force for us defensively and offensively. He will split time between the plate and at the hot corner. Chris Curley will be a good back up as he continues to improve and may become a solid “dual” player. Matt Lepage may also see duty at third base.
Outfield Once again fleet footed Jason Neufeld will be directing traffic in CF. Jason is a fine defender with a great arm. Flanking him in RF will be “Big Mac” Temple Macdonald, Temple means so much to this team and he will anchor the middle of our line up. In left Jason Beale is our projected starter and should be our lead off hitter. Our depth will come from two freshman Taylor Reed and Chance Harker both are working hard and will have some chances to play in situations.
Designated Hitters Nick Smith, Reid Carlson, Chris Curley, and Kyle Schwartz will comprise our primary pool of candidates. All will be involved as pinch-hitters when not already in the game.
Catcher Matt Lepage did a good job as our number 1 last year and he looks to be improved this year. His hitting is better and he will play some third base.
Clayton Howell is a great catcher too and will also be seeing time at third base if eligible. We need to find ways to keep Lepage and Howell in the line-up every game. Rob Elliott, the hardest worker on this years team, will spot start occasionally and aid us tremendously with his bull pen work.
Bench Depth Good question. Depends on the attitude of the non-starters. Taylor Reid is going to have the opportunity to be our primary designated runner.Hopefully our reserves will respond and be ready when called upon.
Pitching Morgan Carlile, Jason Neufeld, and Kyle Schwartz need to have solid years in order for us to be competitive. If they don’t we are in trouble. Two more important factors will be how projected rotation guy Chris LeMay and projected closer Weston Jones perform. Both of these guys are new to the program and both will have a lot of expectations placed upon them. Another big change this year will be having two freshman who are expected to see some starts and log innings this being Brian Edelen and Chris Curley. Rounding out our staff will be Bryan Fuller, Travis Biggs, Curtis Payne, Ryan Clark, Mike Curtis, and Joe Manning. These guys must cover our mid week games and be prepared to step up when others may be off in their game on the weekends.
SUMMARY The fact is we are less experienced and younger. How do our new people respond and will Clayton Howell become eligible? “I remain optimistic. I really think that we are going to develop a good pitching staff. We are going to have to tinker with different people in different slots or roles to find what works best with our position players. The players and coaches need to be patient and flexible.” There are a lot of unknowns and that is very different form what Tiger Baseball has been the past three years. If this group will keep their focus long term the Tigers should be plenty tough at tournament time.
Our first basemen and DH have to be good RBI guys that keep opponents from pitching around Macdonald. How good will our number 3 and 4 rotation guys be? Can Weston Jones become a legitimate closer? Some interesting scenarios to be played out this season. Very interesting!
