Benda Throws No-Hitter!
The Coalminers went 3-1 on bathtub weekend as they beat-up on the Northwest Honkers and took their only loss in Victoria against the Mavericks.
The star for game one was Joey Benda, as he dominated the Honkers throwing a complete game no-hit shutout with 11 k's as Nanaimo won 2-0. Not to be out-done was Mike Collins hitting the Coalminers' first homerun of the season in his first action of the year.
Game 2 was more of the same as Nanaimo's pitching shutout the Honkers offence once again led by Jordan Rogers who picked up the win throwing 6 innings pacing Nanaimo to a 4-0 victory. Dale Ballance led the offensive attack going 3-3 with an rbi and 2 runs scored.
The Coalminers put an exclamation point on their 3 game series with Northwest winning 10-0. Jon Przybyl picked up the win on the mound throwing 5 strong innings, while Mike Collins picked up his 2nd homerun at the plate. The Miners then had to travel to Victoria where they lost 8-2.
Next Weekend Nanaimo heads to Kelowna where they intend to win their first provincial championship since 2005!
Coalminers Split Double-Header Against Langley:
The Miners split their double header with Langley this weekend winning game one 6-5, and losing game two 9-2.
Nanaimo received another strong start from Joey Benda as he pitched 5 2/3 innings, with 4 k's, picking up the no-decision as Cody Phipps picked up the win in relief. Bill Hadden and Dale Ballance picked up a hit and an rbi a piece, while Jeff Vickers was 1/3 and scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th on a passed ball.
Game 2 was all Blaze as Langley clubbed out 14 hits in the 9-2 win. Donny MacQuarrie was 2/5 at the dish while Cairns, Vickers, Kris Small, Cody Phipps, and Grant Kendrick picked up a hit each in the loss. Mike Jones had an impressive showing in relief throwing 4 scoreless innings.

Miners place 4th @Kelowna Canada Day Baseball Blast:
Despite a lack of arms the Nanaimo Coalminers managed to advance to the semi-final where they lost to Thurston County and ulitimately finished 4th in a tournament that the team has struggled in during recent years.
Highlights from the tourny include Joey Benda's pitching performance, going 1-1 with a save in 3 appearances on the mound in 4 days, including a complete game victory. Also, Jordan Blundell hit .429 (6/14) for the tournament which was his first action of the 2011 season. Furthermore, Ben Cairns finished the tournament on a tear getting 7 hits in his last 10 at-bats.
Miners Sweep Coquitlam!
After Saturday's games in Burnaby were rained out, the Coalminers took two from Coquitlam on Sunday playing error free baseball to improve there record to 7-7.
The Miners won game 1 7-1 behind yet another solid start from RHP Joey Benda who went 6 innings with 3 k's and allowed just 1 run. Dale Ballance was 3/3 at the dish with 3 runs scored, Jeff Vickers hit a double and drove in a run, and Greg Wallace went 2/3 with 2 rbi singles and 2 runs scored.
Game two was tightly contest with Nanaimo coming out on top 3-1. Shane McQuade got the win on the mound pitching 4 innings, with 2 k's, and allowed 1 run. Cody Phipps picked up the save. Jeff Vickers delivered a big 2 run double in the first.
Miners Bounce Back After Tough Road Trip:
After a tough road trip to Tacoma the Coalminers bounced back and took two wins from Victoria 7-6, and 3-2 at Serauxmen Stadium this weekend.
First year Coal Miner Cole McKaig led Nanaimo's offence in game one going 2/3 with a double, 2rbi, and 2 runs scored. Greg Wallace hit a double and scored 3 times in his first game with the team this summer while Ben Cairns added two hits, scored twice, and drove in a run with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th. Bill Hadden picked up the win in relief after another solid start from Shane McQuade.
Game two was another tightly contested contest with an emphasis on pitching and defence. Wallace made an impact smacking a triple and driving in 2. Joey Benda pitched 5 scoreless innings and picked up the win, striking out 3. Dale Ballance recorded his 2nd save of the season in relief.
Coal Miners Split in Coquitlam:
After having their double header against Victoria cancelled the Miners travelled to Coquitlam and split their double header.
In Game 1 the Miners lost a heartbreaker 2-1 in 10 innings as the winning run scored on an overthrow. Bill Hadden had 2 hits and 2 sb's and scored the only run for Nanaimo while Brandon Lymer drove in their only run. Joey Benda threw 7 innings of shut out baseball and Dale Ballance took an unfortunate loss in relief.
The Coal Miners came back strong taking game 2 from Coquitlam 7-4. Cody phipps got the win for Nanaimo pitching 5 and 1/3 strong innings giving up just 1 earned run. Phipps also had a strong showing at the plate as joined Ben Cairns, Evan Olsen, and Bill Hadden in collecting two hits a piece. Ballance, Phipps, Kris Small, and Tyler Moretti had an rbi each for the ball game.The Miners continue their season this weekend in Tacoma where they will play a 4 game set vs the Studs.
Miners Drop 2 in Home Opener:
It was a tough day at the yard for the Miners this past weekend as they lost both games to the Burnaby Bulldogs due primarily to a lack of offence. Burnaby's Tim Fehr threw a complete game 2 hitter, with 8 k's to defeat the miners 2-1. Joey Benda thew well unfortunately picking up a complete game loss. Bill Hadden drove in the Coalminers' only run of the game.
Game two was a lopsided loss for the Miners as they were unable to come back from an early deficit and lost 8-0 in 6 innings. Sinclair picked up the win for Burnaby while Dorman got the Loss for Nanaimo. A bright spot on an otherwise rough day was the performance of new Coalminers Cole Mckaig and Evan Olsen, as they both picked up two hits a piece in their Miner debut.
Coalminers Open 2011 with 2 Wins!
The Miners opened the season with 2 wins in Victoria this weekend. Joey Benda threw 4 strong innings in game one picking up the win against the A's. Mike Jones drove in 2 runs while Ben Cairns and Dale Ballance each picked up two hits as the Miners won 5-1. Bill Hadden picked up the win in relief in game two as the Miners won 10-7 against the Cardinals despite a rain delay in the 3rd inning. Grant Vickers led the way at the plate with three hits as the offense was able to come back from an early deficit and put up 10 runs in the victory.
The Coalminers are back in action next weekend at Serauxmen Stadium for their home opener against the Burnaby Bulldogs.
PIL Coalminers Release 2011 Schedule:
The Nanaimo Coalminers have released their preliminary schedule for the 2011 season with only a few remaining dates to be filled. Highlights include the Kelowna Canada Day Baseball Blast running through July Long weekend, and of course the provincial tournament (also held in Kelowna) at season's end.
Lead by Player/Coach Dale Ballance, the 2011 Miners are poised to make a run for a provincial title. With the return of key veterans and the addition of some young talent this year's team hopes to capture their first provincial championship since 2005.
