Pieper lifts H/D

HUSTISFORD — Derek Pieper picked up the win and belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning as Hustisford/Dodgeland held off visiting Mayville, 10-6, in Friday's Division 2 baseball regional opener.
"After Tuesday, we came out real aggressive," H/D coach Rich Padron said. "We put the ball in play and we were opportunistic.
"Derek did enough to keep us in the game. We played solid defense behind him."
Pieper went 6.2 innings and struck out four. Ben Fredrick hit two doubles while Austin Neu had two hits with a double.
"The top of our order was solid," Padron said. "Neu and the guys behind him are producing.
"Derek's homer was huge and it was like frosting for us. We felt we'd be in control after that."
Cody Wasmund had two hits including a solo homer for Mayville (9-12). Mike Gionet doubled and tripled while Randy Hurst had two hits.
Next up for H/D (14-7) is a trip to defending state champion Waupun Tuesday.
"We're looking forward to it," Padron said. "If we play steady like tonight, we'll have a pretty good chance.
"We know they're a good ball club and they're the defending champs."

Horicon downs Cards in 8

HORICON — Shaun Dickinson's RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth lifted host Horicon to a 3-2 Flyway victory over Mayville Thursday.
"I was extremely happy for the guys," Horicon coach Jeff Wolf said. "We've had a lot of woulda, coulda, shoulda games this year. We played a complete game today."
Andrew Wasmund was dominant on the mound for the Marshmen (3-10), striking out 13 and walking three.
The only hit he allowed was a solo homer to Cody Wasmund in the fourth inning, tying the score at 1.
It stayed that way until the eighth when two Horicon errors allowed an unearned run to score for a 2-1 Mayville edge.
Horicon got things going quickly in the bottom of the inning off Cardinals pitcher Zach Wilderman.
Jeff Ritschard led off with a single and Mike Michalovitz sacrificed him to second. But the throw went high and both runners advanced into scoring position.
Tyler Mintzlaff followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ritschard. A walk and an error set up Dickinson's game-winning hit.
"Andrew was as good as anyone I've seen in quite some time," Wolf said. "Zach pitched a heck of a game as well."

ROSENDALE — Zach Wilderman scored on a wild pitch with two out in the top of the ninth for Mayville as the Cardinals came away with an 8-7 win over Laconia in Tuesday's Flyway baseball contest.
