49ers back in playoff race; sweep weekend
The Brownsville 49ers reeling off a tough loss last weekend versus league leading Rubicon 5-1 rebounded and stayed alive with must wins this past weekend versus Horicon and new rival Mayville.
Sunday the 49ers hosted Mayville/Brownsville with anything but a win would probably end the 49ers chance at post-season. The 49ers struck first with a run in the first. Jeremy Bartelt lead off the game with a single, was moved over to second on a bunt, and scored on a rbi single by Shawn Wozniak. The 49ers added another run in the third with the hot hitting Bartelt leading off with a double. He was then plated by J.J. Rafliks double to the left center gap. However, the was all the scoring the 49ers could muster until the dramatics late in the game.
The Mallards got back in the game in the 5th. Former 49er standout David Soda lead off with a single. He was then moved to second by a walk by former 49er E.J. Dornfeldt. Who was 3 for 3 on the day. After a groundout by former 49er Aaron Johnson moved the runners up, Kevin Schultz hit a hot grounder to third which was booted for an error. Then former 49er Kurt Roeder doubled to the left center gap. However, a great relay from Hall to Bartelt to Goody nipped a sliding Schultz at the plate.
The game stayed tied until the ninth. As former 49er Tyson Apfelbeck mixed his pitches to the max and held the 49er scoreless thru the 7th. Former 49er Kurt Roeder came into the game in the 7th to strike Goodfellow and Wozniak with the bases loaded. "That right there I thought was the ballgame, stated manager Tim Norton. Never did I think he (Kurt ) would strike out our 3 and 4 hitters."
However, 49er Standout pitcher Tyler Witkowski held serve. After surrendering 10 hits, he still got into and out of trouble all day. "I would say this is the worst stuff I have seen Tyler have in a long time" noted Norton. "Even Tyler admitted to me he had nothing but a fastball all day." Well Witkowski got tough and battled his way till the ninth.
The 49ers started the ninth with a Hall flyout. 2nd baseman Raddant drew a walk followed by a bloop single by Bartelt. The hero then came to the plate. J.J. Raflik then fell behind 0-2 in the count and coaxed a ball, then hit a lazer down the right field line. The throw was late and that was the ball game. "A huge win for us, we are still alive, breathing, but we still have alot of work ahead of us", said Norton.
On Saturday the 49ers bats exploded for 19 runs and 21 hits. Hitting stars were Bartelt, Raflik, Wilson and Raddant who all collected 3 hits apiece. The pitching was led by freshman Tyler DeBoer who was not sharp, but got the win with 5 innings of work. "Overall a nice win, but not exciting because they didn't come to play", noted Norton.
Next week the 49ers travel to visit their number one rival the Oakfield Oaks. Game time is Sunday at 1:30p.m. in Oakfield. Come out and see if the 49ers can continue their winning ways.
The 49ers were also suppose to finish their Plymouth championship game next week, but this has been moved back to August due to scheduling conflicts with Kewaskum.
