Lumberjacks fall to Larchwood, IA in Quarterfinal Round of State "B"
(Mitchell, SD Thur. Aug. 11)
Britton's run at a state title was cut short on Thursday as the Jacks were defeated 12-8 by Larchwood. Both teams pounded out 15 hits in a game that was rain delayed for two and a half hours. The rain delay occurred in the middle of the fourth inning with the Lumberjacks trailing 7-6. For the game the Diamonds ended up scoring 3 runs on errors and at least 2 runs on opportunities for outs that Britton squandered.
The Lumberjacks were lead offensively by Terry Tchida and Pat Krause with 3 hits each. Two hits a piece for Aaron Kappes, BJ Richter, and Adam Suther including a 2 run homerun to dead center in the 2nd inning. Mike Babcock, Spencer Sudbeck, and Troy Knecht each added 1 hit to round things out.
BJ Richter pitched the first 3 innings, Spencer Sudbeck then came in four 4, and Terry Tchida pitched the bottom of the eighth. Thcida's eight inning was the only inning that Larchwood did not score a run.
The Lumberjacks end the season with a 12-9 record, and are already anticipating the 2012 campaign. This was the first time since 1992 that a Britton team advanced past the second round of the State Tournament and only the second time in the past seven consecutive tournament apppearnaces that the Jacks have got out of the first round. With the newly renovated field close to completion the Lumberjacks hope to avoid another year such as this where 13 regular season games were lost due to field work and heavy rainfall.
