Young Lakers’ squad off to a 2-1 start
Heron Lake’s amateur baseball team
plays at Jackson tonight
Already three games into the 2009 season, the Heron Lake Lakers’ amateur baseball team has been busy, with a solid mix of veterans and first- or second-year players making up a full20-man roster.
After opening the season May 10 with an 8-7, 10-inning loss at home to Hadley, the Lakers earned a pair of victories Sunday afternoon at Laker Field. Heron Lake, which went 7-16 last season, defeated Mountain Lake 12-2 and Luverne 4-3 to improve to 2-1 this year (see separate story for details on those games).
Heron Lake, which plays at Jackson tonight (7:30 p.m.) in its first road game of the year, is again managed by Chad Knutson. Now in his eighth season as the Lakers’ skipper, Knutson is confident the team can be competitive on a game-to-game basis with many of the teams in the First Nite and Gopher Leagues.
“We have about 20 guys on the roster, so we should have good depth - possibly the best that we have had in recent years,” Knutson said. “We have a lot of young players who will be playing amateur baseball and using wood bats for just the first or second season in their careers. We also have several experienced veterans who we will count on to provide leadership.”
Mark Fest is the team’s most-experienced player, having played for the Lakers for more than 20 years. He will see time in the outfield.
Matt Franks, Tony Jorgensen and Ike Rogers have each played at least five years for Heron Lake. Franks returns as the team’s ace on the mound, Jorgensen will likely see action in the outfield, and Rogers is back as the Lakers’ top catcher.
Lucas Knutson (infield, outfield) and Keith Rogers (outfield, pitcher), along with Chad Knutson (infield, outfield), give the Lakers three more players with lots of experience.
That leaves 13 players who will be playing amateur baseball for just the first or second time. Jerrad Meinders, Josh Olson, Trevor Leopold, James Anderson and Brad Sowles were all regulars in their first year with the Lakers a season ago.
Thomas Albrecht and Alex Leopold each played some last season and join Eric Milbrath, Lon Eichenberger, Bill Blumberg, Kirk McBreen, Ben Scheevel and Octavio Jimenez in their first full seasons at the amateur level.
“We are excited to have these guys on our team,” Chad Knutson said. “We should have good talent once again, but our depth will be much-improved. We would like to have at least 15 players available for most of our games, and we think we will once we get into the summer months.”
Kevin Rogers is also a part of the team in an assistant coaching role.
Heron Lake will play at Tracy Sunday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
Lakers win two games Sunday After dropping a tough one-run game the week before, the Heron Lake Lakers came back and won a pair of amateur baseball games Sunday afternoon at Laker Field. Heron Lake (2-1), which lost to Hadley 8-7 in 10 innings in the season-opener May 10, hosted Mountain Lake and Luverne in a pair of scheduled seven-inning games. The Lakers opened with a 12-2 victory over Mountain Lake in six innings before capturing an exciting, walk-off victory over Luverne. Alex Leopold, who pitched eight and one-third stellar innings, delivered an RBI single up the middle to give the Lakers a 4-3 victory in nine innings. Heron Lake’s Matt Franks tossed a complete game in the opener, striking out five and walking four while allowing two runs on four hits. The Lakers’ Keith Rogers went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run double to end the game early in the bottom of the sixth. That capped a six-run frame for the Lakers, who scored three runs in the first to take control early. Heron Lake had leads of 3-0, 4-1 and 6-2 before ending the game via the 10-run rule with six runs in the sixth, giving Franks lots of run support. The Lakers also played errorless defense behind Franks. Alex Leopold was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple, and both Jerrad Meinders (two-run single) and Bill Blumberg (RBI double) had a key hit for the Lakers. Ike Rogers and James Anderson each had a single, while Lucas Knutson drew three walks and scored two runs for Heron Lake. Leopold then tossed a solid ballgame in the nightcap, going eight and one-third innings. He allowed just three runs (two through eight innings) on eight hits and one walk while fanning six batters. Lon Eichenberger picked up the win, pitching the final two-thirds of an inning. Luverne scored a run in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 lead. Heron Lake, though, rallied with two runs in the bottom half to claim the victory. Trevor Leopold ripped a one-out single to center to start the comeback. Ike Rogers later reached on a two-out error, giving the Lakers runners on first and second. Meinders followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Leopold with the tying run. Then, with runners on second and third, Alex Leopold laced a single up the middle to score Meinders with the walk-off, game-winning run. Alex Leopold and Chad Knutson each had two singles for the Lakers, who scored a run in both the first and second innings and had a 2-0 lead for most of the game. Luverne scored a run in back-to-back innings (fifth and sixth) to tie the game, sending it to extra innings. Eichenberger singled and scored in the first inning, while Keith Rogers and Josh Olson each had a single for the Lakers. Heron Lake visits Jackson tonight (7:30 p.m.) and Tracy Sunday (2 p.m.).
