Andrea Innis

Hudson County player of the year:
After leading Secaucus as a forward for two years, 5-10 junior Andrea Innis moved over to point guard, where she still led the team in every offensive category.

“It was definitely different being the point guard, but my team really stepped up and made it easy,” said Innis. “I knew I could count on them to do the job.”

A three-year starter, Innis led Secaucus (21-5) with game averages of 18.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, five assists and 3.8 steals while guiding her team, which started five underclassmen, to the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 1 semifinals.

“I really was not looking to score,” said Innis. “I was looking to let everyone else score. I am proud that we were able to get so far this year with such a young team.”

After setting the school's single-season scoring record last year with 539 points, Innis is on track to set the school career scoring record of 1,791 points, set by Cory Roesing in 2007. She now has 1,324 points.

“That’s in the back of my mind, but I try not to focus on it," said Innis. "The team comes first. If the team does well, that's all that matters.”

"Andrea has been an invaluable member of our team for the past three years," said Secaucus coach John Sterling. "Her passion, commitment, and work ethic are the main reasons that we had such a successful season.”

The junior, who moved from forward to point guard, was named Hudson County Player of the Year by The Star Ledger.

Few could match the toughness or all-around package of this 5-foot-9 guard. Denmark led the Royal Knights in scoring (17 points per game) and steals (5.3 per) to go with 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists a contest. She had 27 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists in the HCT quarterfinals against St. Anthony.

All League - Honorable Mention

Kristina Nieves, Fair Lawn High School

Fair Lawn’s Kristina Nieves, left, beats Paramus’ Jessica Reuveni to the ball.

In order to take some of the weight off my guards, they are continuing the tradition of pounding the ball inside to the likes of Nieves.

"I’ve done better with the help of my teammates," said Nieves, who averages 10 points, 3.2 blocks, 9.1 rebounds, and 2 steals. She is a 85% foul shooter

"I know that my guards can handle the ball. They always look in to me because they have confidence in me to make my shots count. I have the luck of having good point guards."

Being a third year varsity player, she received honorable mention all league this year.

A tribute to Coach Cecil King:

Being the original founder of the Gazelles, Coach King is the inspiration behind the NJ Gazelles.  He stepped forward in our time of need to help assist in setting up the program, offering his own Gazelles program and its resources to lay the groundwork.  Without Coach King, it would have been very difficult to get the NJ Gazelles aau program up and running.

Coach King embodies everything right about aau basketball.  He is a no-nonsense gentleman in the truest sense of the word.  A gentleman who stands so much taller than his stature might lead one to believe!  Thank you Coach King for leading by example.
