Vanderbilt's Sonny Gray wants to play for U.S. again

Sonny Gray went overseas for the first time a year ago when he made Team USA and played in Japan as a warmup to the World Baseball Challenge tournament in British Columbia.

The Vandy junior right-handed pitcher leaves today to try for another international baseball opportunity.

Tryouts for spots on the 22-player United States roster begin Tuesday at Cary, N.C. The roster will be announced July 11, and the tournament is July 30-Aug. 7 in Tokyo.

Gray said despite making the team in 2009, he is not taking the tryouts for granted.

"I'm going in with the mind-set of winning a spot," Gray said. "I want to get another opportunity to play. Hopefully, I will be one of the most experienced guys on the team."

Gray went 10-5 with a 3.48 ERA this past season in his first year as Vandy's No. 1 starter. He was named to the national Gold Glove team. Those stats may have been helped by last summer's experience. Gray made eight appearances for Team USA in 2009, pitching 24 innings with a 0.75 ERA, three victories and 27 strikeouts.

"Last year was my first time to go (out of the country) so I had to go get a passport," Gray said. "That was very exciting. It's like a culture shock when you get off at the airport. People are there with eyes big, wanting to take pictures of you because you have USA stuff on."
