Posted Mar 8/14 - Riels Claw Back To Win Game #1

Riels 6 vs Twins 4 Tuesday March 4, 2014

FIRST PEROD

It only took 20 seconds for the Twins to score their first goal when Nick Doyle took a weak shot that handcuffed Kyle Vandemosselaer.  Doyle took advantage of a turnover in the Riels zone with assists going to Trevor Slama and Justin Fernando.

Riels tied it up at 6:34 when league leader Brett Charette scored a beauty top shelf beating Twins goal tender Michael Newman with assists going to Brian Dies and Stanislav Izvekov.  The Twins continued their way of playing hard nosed checking game, finishing their checks and not giving the Riels much room.  The hard work paid off for the Twins when Justin Muir scored at 16:22 with help from James Bergal and Darrel Kilburn.  With 41 seconds later, Simon Klassen scored at 17:03 unassisted to make it 3-1 Twins.  Riels made it 3-2 late in the period when Stanislav Izvekov finished a three way passing play from Brian Dies and Brett Charette at 19:22.  Then the pesky Twins dumped the puck deep into Riels zone.   The Twins out hustled the Riels to the puck and Nick Doyle shot the puck in front with two seconds left and Trevor Slama tucked it in the net to finish the period 4-2 Twins.  It sure was a tough first period for the Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer.  Playoff time goal tending has to be at its best.  The Twins outshot the Riels 16-11.

SECOND PERIOD

The Riels came out in the second period a lot more focused.  The Riels power forward Glen Young and Michael Gorrie went out bringing in the second, who was something, the Riels did not do in the first period.  Riels were skating hard, totally dominating the play deep in Twins territory.  Then at 7:57, it paid off when Belarus star Artur Raevskiy slammed a rebound past Michael Newman to make it 4-3 Twins with assists coming from Jens Giesbrecht and Chris Prejet.   At 16:40 of the second period, all-star defenseman Sean Christensen scored a beauty on a nice three-way passing play from Brian Michiels and Glen Young.  That knotted the game at 4-4 ties after two periods.  Twins out shot the Riels 13-9 in the second.

THIRD PERIOD

Riels opened the scoring in the 3rd period on the power play when Brian Dies scored a nice goal from Mike Riffel and Brett Charette.  Its Riels first lead in the game 5-4.  Then at 11:06, Riels Russian star, Stanislav Izvekov scored his second of the night with assists coming from Brett Charette and Brian Dies.  It was a great come back by the Riels.  It was not easy, but they clawed back slowly and got the job done.  Riels were missing three players, Matt Wilson, Russell Trudeau and Travis Ziprick due to injuries.  Hope to see them back soon!  Riels next game is Friday, March 7th at 7:30pm at Century arena.
