Posted Nov 21/13 - Riels Win in Shootout

FIRST PERIOD

Riels started off the game having a few chances early, but goaltender Jerret Smith for the Express came up

big, keeping the Riels off the scoreboard. Then at 11:03 on the power play, Isaac Bellan scored his 5th

the season with assists coming from Ryan Leaf and Chad Pearch.

Then 32 seconds later, Raymond Allard scored his 5th

Riels played like they were on their 15th

hard, winning battles on the boards and outshooting the Riels 13-11.

SECOND PERIOD

I am sure the coaching staff was not too pleased of what they saw in the first period. Start of the second

frame, the Riels started skating, getting shots to the net, which paid off early at 1:17 when Jens Giesbrecht

scored his third of the season from Glen Young. Riels dominated that period. At the 8:10 mark, Brian

Dies tied the game at 2-2 scoring his 12th

Travis Ziprick.

The Riels were pressing hard late in the period when again Brian Dies finished off a beautiful three way

passing play from line mates Charette and Trudeau on the power play at 18:26. That made it 3 -2 for the

Riels after the second.

THIRD PERIOD

Riels scored early on the power play at 1:43 when captain Michael Gorrie fired a blast on a three way

passing play from Ryan Wilgosh and Sean Christensen which made it 4-2 Riels.

Then the Riels went back to their ways as they did it the first period. The Express scored at the 2:50

mark to come within one goal. Isaac Bellan scored his third of the year from Pearch and Pokrant. The

Riels took some lazy penalties three in a row. The Express player Chad Pearch scored his 10th

at 10:50 on the power play from Ryan Leaf and Mike Riffel. The game was tied at 4-4. Sean Christensen

found the magic man, Russell Trudeau in front of the Express net when he spun around and backhanded

a beauty past net minder Jerret Smith shorthand goal that placed the Riels back in front 5-4 at 14:14.

All that hard work done by the Riels to kill off the power play and score short handed went by the

wayside when Mason Gibson scored at 15:37 to tie it 5-5. The assists came from Ryan Leaf and Chad

Pearch.

With four seconds left in the game, the Express were given a penalty shot cuz defensemen Brock

Bram deliberately pushed the net off its mourings. Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer made a

big save to keep the game going into overtime. There was no scoring done in the third period. Then

Vandemosselaer stopped all three shots in the shoot out for a win 6-5. Russell Trudeau scored the

winning goal. Riels out shot Express 17-16 in the third.

THREE STARS

First star Russell Trudeau, second star Brian Dies and third star Ryan Wilgosh.

COACHES CORNER

Key factors - We have to play 60 minutes

of the season from Greg Myall and Mike Riffel.

day road trip. Take nothing away from the Express who worked

of the season with helpers coming from Brett Charette and

- When they were down 4-2 early in the third, Riel’s work ethic was a 5 out of 10.

- All respect to Express for not quitting
