Braves push Eagles to limit but fall short of state finals

Posted by on May 13th, 2013 // No Comment

The Socastee High baseball team took Airport to the wall Monday night before the Braves finally ran into one.

After winning three straight games to reach the winner-take-all Lower State final, including a 12-1 victory over the Eagles in the first game of Monday’s doubleheader, the Braves (21-9) finally ran out of gas in the nightcap.

Airport claimed a 2-0 win over Socastee thanks to Austin Hawley’s four-hitter, spoiling an equally solid outing by Socastee’s Dylan Thompson, who allowed only five hits but gave up a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Braves also committed two errors after combining for none in their previous three outings.

The finale was in stark contrast to the opener, when the Braves erupted for 11 hits and capitalized on four errors by the Eagles. Thompson went 4-for-4 at the plate and Dalton Smith and Buck Bacot had a combined four hits and seven RBIs.

Too bad the Braves didn’t save some of the offense for the finale, but Hawley defeated them for the second time in the Lower State tournament and Airport advances to the Class 3A state title series.
