Posted Apr 6/11 - Rawlings Cardinals Clubs Conquer Maryland Heights

In a rare feat, both the 11u and 13u Rawlings Cardinals win Championships in same tournament on same weekend....

With emotions running high and this weekends tournament in the wake of Coach Yorkovich passing away the 13u Birds started things off Friday night with a blitzkrieg, scoring 15 runs in the top of the first before one out was recorded.  The final score in three innings -  17-2 over the Missouri Strykers.  Following the game Gina Yorkovich was presented with the game ball.

Saturday morning the 'lil birds started off hot, dominating the first game 17-5 over a solid St Charles Titans team.  In their second game of the morning the 'lil Birds were overmatched 13-1 by the Black Sox.

In the afternoon, the Big Birds returned to action but started off slow against the Illinois Diamond Dawgs, trailing 7-1 in the last inning only to lose 7-5 with the tying run at second base.  The momentum did not carry over however, as they trailed 8-0 in the second inning of the next game.  In true Cardiac Cardinal fashion, and as they did so many times last year, the Big Birds rallied to make the score 9-8 going into the last at bat, and with two outs scored two runs to win the game 10-9 vs the Missouri Diamond Dawgs to take the #1 seed into Sundays Championship.

Championship Sunday was the story of rematches, with the Big Birds facing the same team they defeated less than 24 hours earlier, the Missouri Diamond Dawgs.  The story line looked to be a repeat with the Dawgs scoring 4 runs in the top of the first.  Once again the Big Birds battled back and in a game that took 3 hours and 40 minutes, the Rawlings Cardinals took charge and dominated the remainder of the contest defeating the Diamond Dawgs a second straight day by the score of 18-10 to win their first Championship of the season.

Not to be outdone, the 'lil birds took the field Sunday afternoon with their own sights on revenge.  In the semi-final matchup, the #3 seed 'lil Birds were facing the the #2 seed Black Sox, whom they were dominated by less than 24 hours earlier.  The 'lil Birds started off slow trailing 6-1 in the second inning.  Presumably taking notes from their fellow nest dwellers, the 'lil Birds came roaring back to defeat the Black Sox 9-6.  Thus setting up a Championship Game against the undefeated #1 seeded JC Slam.

In the Championship game, the 'lil birds won the coin toss and the winning was just beginning.  Not to be without suspense though, the 'lil Birds found themselves trailing 9-2 going into the bottom of the third inning.  The Birds took charge and dominated the final 5 innings, outscoring the Slam 16-3.  Thus also taking their first Championship of the season by the score of 18-12 and completing a sweep of the top two seeds.  Coach Yorkovich is undoubtedly smiling down on Cardinal Nation!!!
