Posted Apr 3/14 - CARDS HOLD FIRST OUTDOOR PRACTICE

KAMLOOPS: The weather was not ideal for the Saskatoon Bantam AAA Cardinal's first outdoor practice of the year, but for first year head coach Greg Krawchuk, the weather couldn’t have been any better.

"This is great. I feel good," said Krawchuk, who spent the last four years as an assistant coach with Cardinals. "I’ve played many a games in colder weather like this. This is warmer than last year, that’s for sure."

Krawchuk is trying to turn around a team that stuggled last year, and wants to bring the program back to the elite status it once boasted.

The first year head coach wants his team to know that it will have to earn everything.

"We’ve got the guys here that have worked very hard, and are very competitive, and that’s what we wanted," Krawchuk said. "We want a competitive atmosphere and guys making sure that those spots are just not given to them. They had to earn them and we have a lot of guys that worked really hard to earn those spots."

With the new direction in which Krawchuk is taking his team, he still believes it is important to remind his team of what transpired last season.

Krawchuk can sense urgency from his players to get back on the field and prove themselves.

"They certainly do have a chip on their shoulder," he said. "They feel that last year was a tough year, and not only from them, but for our fan base, and our baseball team. It’s just excitement that we can use around our guys. They’re anxious, excited, and we’re ready for tomorrow to get here."

The Cards open the 2014 season tomorrow morning against Prince George.
