Posted May 31/13 - CARDS HANG ON TO DUMP DODGERS

With strong swirling winds and blowing dust it was not the best night for baseball and it was apparent that it was going to be a long game when leadoff batter Garrett Krawchuk, with two strikes, popped a towering fly-ball to the Humboldt Dodgers short stop.  Normally this would be an easy out, but Krawchuk was rewarded with a single when the ball dropped out of the fielder’s glove.  Krawchuk’s second life was short lived as Nolan Machibroda took his place at first after hitting into a fielder’s choice.  Machibroda’s life on the bases ended when he was gunned down at two for the second out of the inning.  The Cards salvaged two runs in the first inning, when Bryden Gore was hit home by Shawn Lewis and Ryan Crilly scored Lewis on a hard hit ball through the gap.

Gore started for the Cards on the mound, giving up two runs, but had to leave after the first with an upper body injury.  Machibroda took over going 3 and 2/3 innings with 4Ks while Ethan Meyer, with his new contact lenses, finished the game on the mound going 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 unearned runs with 4Ks.

With a 5-2 lead at the bottom of the 7th it looked like it was going to be an easy victory for the Cards.  However, the Dodgers answered back with two runs.  With 2 runners in scoring position, Lewis got the final out along the first base side to end the game.

Offensively the Cards were led by Gore and Lewis who both went 2/3.  Crilly, Meyer and RJ Vinding each had singles.  The Cardinals defensive star of the game was Tyler Stadnichuk who sucked up ground balls like a Hoover cleaning a rug.

The Cards have Friday off before meeting up again with the Dodgers on Saturday morning.
