CLARK — The Platte-Geddes 15-16-year-old baseball team won the Class B state VFW baseball tournament Sunday at Dickinson Park.
It capped the tourney with an 11-8 win over Mount Vernon in the championship.
Earlier in the day, Irene topped Clear Lake 6-3 for third place and Clark rallied for an 8-7 win over Howard-Canova in eight innings.
Saturday, Platte-Geddes and Mount Vernon notched semifinal wins.
Platte-Geddes rallied to beat Clear Lake 8-7 in 11 innings and Mount Vernon rolled to a 16-1 win over Irene. In consolation semifinal games, Howard-Canova beat Selby and Clark topped Lyman by 7-5 scores. Howard-Canova won in eight innings.
Four-run outbursts in the fourth and fifth inning helped Platte-Geddes turn back Mount Vernon in Sunday’s title game. Austin Plooster went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in for Platte-Geddes. Cody Wagner was the winning pitcher and helped his cause with two hits.
Trey DeHaan doubled and drove in two runs.
Jake Sonne and Dean Frey each went 2-for-4 for Mount Vernon.
Howard-Canova led 7-1 after 5 1/2 innings in the consolation championship before host Clark rallied.
Clark scored five runs in the sixth, tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh and won the game on Lane Hovde’s game-winning double in the eighth.
Evan Donahue scored three runs for Howard-Canova.
Starter Landon Laible notched six strikeouts. |
