REDFIELD — The Mount Vernon 15-16-year-old teener baseball team took the consolation championships at the Maurice Ratigan Memorial Tournament in Redfield over the weekend.

After losing its first-round game Saturday to Garretson, 21-4, Mount Vernon fought back with two wins Sunday.

It also received the tournament’s sportsmanship award, which was voted on by the coaches and umpires.

Against Garretson, Cam Deinert was the losing pitcher. He threw two innings, allowed four hits and 12 runs, two of which were earned.

Brian Vermeulen was 4-for-4 with an RBI, Deric Denning was 2-for-2 with a double and Jake Sonne was 1-for-3. Nate Zens was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Sunday, Mount Vernon defeated Madison, 4-1, and Redfield, 7-4.

Against Madison, Zens threw five innings. He allowed four hits, no earned runs and struck out 10.

Vermeulen was 3-for-3, Sonne was 2-for-2, Zens was 2-for-3 with a double and Cody London was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Vermeulen picked up the win against Redfield. He threw four innings, allowed five hits, two earned runs and walked four.

Deinert was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Sonne was 1-for-2 with a double, Denning was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Justin Davis was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Mount Vernon is 9-2. It plays next at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Corsica.
