WAGNER — Tri-Valley used its depth to overcome a five-title day by Wagner, beating the Red Raiders 194.5-171 for top honors at the Wagner Invitational on Saturday.
Tri-Valley had 10 wrestlers earn top-four finishes, including two champions and four runners-up. The Mustangs’ Ryan Schuman (38-0) remained unbeaten at 120 pounds, edging Wagner’s Sage Zephier 2-0. Also for Tri-Valley, 220-pounder Thad Johnson improved to 32-0, scoring a 6-2 win over Elk Point-Jefferson’s Luke Forsling for the title.
Wagner had eight placewinners, including five champions and a runner-up. Alex Kocer remained unbeaten at 152 pounds, winning by technical fall in the final.
Parkston, which finished third, also had two champions. Elk Point-Jefferson, Faulkton Area, Garretson, Alcester-Hudson and Vermillion each had one champion.
At 126 pounds, Flandreau senior Cody Reed (30-1) suffered his first loss of the season, dropping a 4-3 decision to Wagner’s Tyler Dion in the final.
Vermillion 132-pound Brett Bye remained unbeaten, improving to 27-0 with a 10-3 victory over Tri-Valley’s Austin Oyen, the top-ranked wrestler in Class B.
Will Mart placed second at 285 pounds dropping a decision to Robbie Aesoph of Faukton with a close score of 3-0.
