LY GLOBE Jackson&#039\;s Blaise Jacobsen celebrates after launching a home
run during an amateur baseball game on Sunday in Jackson. JACKSON — Jerra
d Meinders lifted the ball over the left-field fence twice Sunday afternoo
n at Wacker Field\, driving in three of his game-high four RBIs and making
sure that the Wilmont Cardinals will again play in the Minnesota State Am
ateur Baseball Tournament later this month.\n\nJust a half-inning after Ja
ckson’s Blaise Jacobsen had launched a two-run homer over the right-field
fence to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning\, Meinders
answered with a two-run blast of his own in the top of the sixth\, puttin
 g the Cardinals back up by a pair\, 6-4.\n\nTwo innings later\, Meinders s
tepped to the plate again and delivered a deep solo home run over the barr
ier near the scoreboard in left-center field\, increasing Wilmont’s lead t
o 7-4.\n\nThe Bulls scored a run in the bottom of the frame and the Cardin
als matched that in the top of the ninth.\n\nJackson\, which stranded 13 b
ase runners in the game\, sent just four batters to the plate in the botto
m of the ninth and Wilmont’s three-run lead held up\, giving the Cardinals
  an 8-5 victory in Game 3 — and a sweep — of the best-of-five Region 13C p
layoff series.\n\nWilmont (21-11) put itself in the driver’s seat for the
sweep by winning a one-run contest (4-3) in Game 1 at Jackson (Aug. 4) and
then tagged a dozen hits in a 12-4 victory in Game 2 at Wilmont two night
s later.\n\nJackson\, which finished its season with an 18-10 record\, nee
ded a win Sunday.\n\nBut the Cardinals soared out of the gate quickly\, pl
ating two runs in each of the first two innings and taking an early 4-1 le
ad.\n\nThe Bulls\, however\, roared back and gave the home crowd reason fo
r optimism in the middle of the game\, as Kody Johnson — a draftee from th
e Windom Pirates — pitched a trio of consecutive shutout innings and drove
in Jacobsen (hit by pitch) with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the thir
d\, trimming the gap to 4-2.\n\nAfter being pounced on early for five hits
in the first two frames\, Johnson retired nine straight Cardinals before
Justin Saufley smacked a two-out single in the top of the fifth.\n\nWilmon
t’s next batter\, however\, popped out to Bulls’ first baseman Kip Wachal\
, ending the inning and keeping the momentum shifted Jackson’s way.\n\nWac
hal led off the bottom of the fifth with an opposite-field single into sha
llow right and then the left-handed batting Jacobsen pulled the first pitc
h he saw well over the right-field fence\, hitting the street and knotting
the score at 4-all.\n\n“Blaise is a good hitter and he really crushed tha
t one\,” exclaimed Meinders\, who had driven in Wilmont’s third run with a
two-out infield single in the bottom of the second.\n\nWilmont’s starting
pitcher Andy Ogdahl — a draftee from the Milroy Irish — induced an infiel
d pop-up\, a fly out and a 6-4 fielder’s choice groundout (to get the forc
e on Johnson\, who had tagged a one-out single) to end the inning with no
more damage.\n\n“Andy was a little wild at first\, but he gave us five sol
id innings\,” praised Wilmont manager Todd Rogers. “That’s what we were ho
ping for and then Adam Diekmann did a really good job\, finishing it up we
ll over the last four innings.”\n\nIn the top of the sixth\, with the scor
e tied at 4-all\, Wilmont repeated what Jackson had just done in the previ
ous frame.\n\nJoe Ahrens (2-for-5) sprayed the first pitch into right fiel
 d for a leadoff single\, giving the Cardinals a runner on first.\n\nFollow
ing a fake bunt attempt by Jesse Teerink\, Jacobsen erased Ahrens from bas
e with a sharp pickoff throw — and again Jackson was making some big plays
.\n\nTeerink (3-for-5)\, however\, delivered one of his three timely singl
es on the day and Wilmont again had a runner on first.\n\nMeinders then st
epped to the plate and drove the second pitch just over the fence near the
left-field foul line.\n\n“I didn’t think it was going out\,” said Meinder
s after the game. “I thought it was just going to a long fly out to left.”
\n\nBut the ball cleared the fence and Wilmont took a 6-4 lead into the bo
ttom of the sixth — after Johnson recorded a strikeout and flyout to end t
he frame.\n\nDiekmann\, who played shortstop for the Cardinals during the
first five innings\, took over on the mound for Wilmont and held Jackson s
coreless in both the sixth and seventh frames.\n\nJackson also changed pit
chers when Craig Fandel took the mound in the top of the eighth.\n\nFandel
struck out the first batter he faced\, but then Meinders greeted him with
a towering solo home run that traveled some 380 feet over the fence in le
ft-center field.\n\n“I knew that one was going far and was hoping for a do
uble\,” Meinders said later. “I was feeling pretty good and seeing the bal
l well — both those guys (Johnson and Fandel) are good pitchers\, so I was
just glad that I was able to connect well and help out the team.”\n\n“Jer
rad hit a couple of bombs — those were big\,” declared Rogers. “We had lot
s of other key base hits\, too\, like the ones we got early and the two th
at we had in the ninth.”\n\nFandel induced a pair of groundouts to end the
inning and then the Bulls rallied with a run in the bottom of the inning.
 \n\nPat Rients (2-for-5) stroked a one-out single up the middle\, advanced
to second on a balk and moved to third a groundout off the bat of Wachal.
\n\nWith Jacobsen at the plate\, Rients streaked home on Wilmont’s only er
ror of the game\, but Diekmann worked out of the jam by getting a flyout t
o left and Wilmont maintained a 7-5 lead.\n\nThe Cardinals padded that mar
gin by plating an insurance run in the top of the ninth.\n\nSaufley starte
 d things with a one-out single and Brandon Diekmann drew a walk.\n\nSaufle
y was retired at third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ahrens\, but t
hen Josh Feller — who had caught four flyballs in left field in the precee
ding two innings (all three outs in the seventh) — ripped an RBI single to
center\, scoring Diekmann from second.\n\n“We were sending Brandon there
no matter what\,” explained Rogers later. “That was a nice run to get\, as
it was the second time that we answered a Jackson score with one of our o
wn.”\n\nTrent Sukalski drew a one-out walk for Jackson in the bottom of th
e ninth\, but Adam Diekmann was able to get the other three Bulls out and
Wilmont had completed its sweep.\n\n“It’s always nice to win a playoff ser
ies and this feels good\,” summed up Rogers.\n\nWilmont had taken a 2-0 le
ad in the top of the first when designated hitter Jay Scheidt led off the
game with a double\, moved to third on Adam Diekmann’s groundout and then
scored on a booming RBI triple by catcher Steven Kremer.\n\nA sacrifice fl
 y by Saufley plated Kremer\, giving the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead.\n\nJac
kson answered in the bottom of the first — aided by three walks and a hit
batsman.\n\nJacobsen’s RBI walk with the bases-loaded plated leadoff batte
r Grant Madison.\n\nWilmont stretched the lead to 4-1 in the top of the se
cond\, as Ahrens smacked a leadoff double to deep right and Teerink follow
ed with a sharp single to center\, putting runners on second and third wit
h no outs.\n\nMeinders’ infield single scored Ahrens. Scheidt drew a one-o
ut walk to load the bases and Meinders crossed the plate on a groundout RB
I by Adam Diekmann.\n\nThe game turned into a pitcher’s duel between Johns
on and Ogdahl for a couple of innings\, before Jacobsen and Meinders excha
nged home runs\, keeping Wilmont in command.\n\nThe Cardinals now await th
e remainder of the Luverne vs. Fairmont series and will play the winner on

ll over the last four innings.”\n\nIn the top of the sixth\, with the scor
e tied at 4-all\, Wilmont repeated what Jackson had just done in the previ
ous frame.\n\nJoe Ahrens (2-for-5) sprayed the first pitch into right fiel
 d for a leadoff single\, giving the Cardinals a runner on first.\n\nFollow
ing a fake bunt attempt by Jesse Teerink\, Jacobsen erased Ahrens from bas
e with a sharp pickoff throw — and again Jackson was making some big plays
.\n\nTeerink (3-for-5)\, however\, delivered one of his three timely singl
es on the day and Wilmont again had a runner on first.\n\nMeinders then st
epped to the plate and drove the second pitch just over the fence near the
left-field foul line.\n\n“I didn’t think it was going out\,” said Meinder
s after the game.
Fairmont series and will play the winner on
Saturday for state tournament seeding purposes.\n\nThe state tournament b
egins Aug. 20 at fields in Willmar\, Bird Island and Spicer.\n\nR H E\n\nW
