  U10 Rules and Guidelines

 1.     U10 will play 8 vs. 8, this is our official playing numbers policy, and will use a #4 sized ball.  If coaches want to play 9v9, BOTH coaches must VERBALLY agree, with referee present, BEFORE the game.  Since team wins, team losses and team goals are NOT kept in U10, no shootouts (i.e overtime) will ever occur.  Winning should NOT be stressed, as you can’t win or lose games that have no official records.  This is instructional league Soccer, teach the kids the game and encourage the kids to have FUN!

 2.     Length of Game – Four (8) minute quarters with (2) minutes between 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th, 5 minutes for halftime.  Time will be kept by referee, not coaches.  Time is based on a running clock, no injury time is added!

 3.     NO free substitutions!  Exceptions:  Player is injured while playing and cannot continue to play or starts feeling sick and tells the coach they aren’t feeling well.  Coaches MUST get referee’s OK before making a substitution (substituted player cannot return in same quarter).  If a player gets hurt, immediately ask the referee stop the game, and attend to that injured player. (PARENTS must stay on the sidelines unless the referee has permitted them on the field).  Have players kneel  down on the field in their current positions.  Play will be restarted with either a dropped ball, throw-in or goal kick.

 4.     If a player does an incorrect throw-in, the Coach or Referee will show the player how to do a correct throw-in, he/she will then get one more chance to correctly throw it again.  If the second throw-in is incorrect, the ball goes over to the other team, ETC.

 5.     No offsides will be normally be called, however players cannot cherry-pick or camp out at the opposing Goal and neither team can take advantage of this NO offside rule.  Ex:  sending a player downfield to get behind the defenders before the ball is put into play.  If a team does take advantage of this rule, the Referee will stop play and bring the ball back to midfield and do a drop ball.

 6.     A penalty kick is awarded against a team which commits an offense for which a direct kick is awarded, inside its own penalty area (18yard line) and while the ball is in play.  Coaches, please encourage your players during practices and games to NOT engage in "handling" the ball.  "Handling" the ball involves deliberate contact with the ball by a player's hand or arm (including fingertips, or outer shoulder).  Be aware that all player "fouls" may not result in immediate stoppage of the game!  If the fouled teamed retains possession, and in the opinion of the referee has an "advantage" type of situation, he/she may signal (with hands or verbal) to "play on", which will result in the whistle NOT being blown for the foul.  Please help educate your parents on this rule.....

7.     There will be NO rough play, cursing or calling of any names.  All that should be said to the opposing team is “Good Game” or compliments in that nature.  Coaches AND referee should remain in the middle of the field during this end of game process.

 8.     During the game, the referee has the right to:  address the team coach and/or players and ask them to control the player’s remarks/rough play.  If it continues, the referee can stop play and ask the coach to sit the player out for the remainder of the quarter (this may be done verbally and/or with displaying of a yellow card).  If the rough play or other inappropriate behavior continues, the Referee has the right to suspend that player(s) for the rest of the game (this may be done verbally and/or with the displaying of a red card).  A substitute player is allowed for either a yellow or red carded player.

 9.     Coaches are to stay on their side of the field at all times (WITHIN the painted Coaches box, if provided), and not to come on the field unless permitted by the referee.  Spectators and/or parents are also to stay on their side of the field.  NO ONE is permitted behind the goals or goal line at anytime during the course of the game (so no goalie parent/coach), unless they are only passing through.  This includes "spectators" in lawn chairs, all spectators should be on the sidelines for safety purposes.

 10.     The referee will also monitor parent/coaches’ remarks/behavior.  Any inappropriate behavior will be addressed with a warning.  If the inappropriate behavior continues; the referee will report the parent/coach to the soccer coordinator for further disciplinary action.  VINTON BOOSTER CLUB WILL NOT TOLERATE REFEREE ABUSE.
