Starting pitcher was Jordan Gau going 7 1/3 innings striking out 6 and taking the loss. At the plate the Angels struggled to produce runs.

When asked about Sunday’s loss, head coach Chris Marek said, “ It’s early in the season and hitting struggles are not uncommon. Also being a new team, it takes some time to develop cohesion. For some of us, it has been a while since we have played with one another and for others these are new teammates, so learning how to play together and who is comfortable in what position will take some time. Anytime you lose it is disappointing but it is still early.” The team’s next action will come when they meet the Dimock-Emery Raptors Thursday, May 19th.  8pm start in Emery.

Alexandria native Tyson Gau hoping for good news after second MRI on right elbow

Alexandria native Tyson Gau has had two MRIs on his right elbow since he last pitched for the Augustana College baseball team.

Alexandria native Tyson Gau has had two MRIs on his right elbow since he last pitched for the Augustana College baseball team.

Gau, who is expecting to hear back from doctors today with results from the second MRI, hurt the elbow during a game against St. Cloud State (Minn.) on May 11.

“The first game of the conference tournament, in the fifth inning, that’s when I hurt it,” Gau said. “I didn’t think it was that bad, so I finished that inning.

“It didn’t feel too good the next day.”

Gau said the first MRI showed that he had a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The UCL is “the Tommy John ligament,” Gau said. Tommy John surgery is known medically as UCL reconstruction surgery.

“They injected a bunch of dye into the second MRI so they could get a better look at it,” Gau said.

Gau finished the fifth inning and earned the win in the last start of his sophomore season. The Vikings beat St. Cloud 5-4 in the opening game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.

After that game, Gau tried to throw on May 17 while the Vikings were getting ready for the NCAA Championships.

“They wanted to see if I could pitch, but I threw a couple balls and it didn’t feel too good,” he said.

That was the last time Gau threw a baseball.

“He had some swelling and stuff at the end of the year,” Augustana coach Tim Huber said. “We want to be cautious with him and work through the summer; we haven’t made any definite decisions yet until we see all the results from the MRI.”

Gau, a 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher/outfielder, recorded a team-high seven victories during his sophomore season.

He finished the season 7-3 with a 3.49 ERA. He appeared in 13 games — starting 11 — and threw three complete games and one shutout.

He tossed a team-high 67 innings and struck out a team-high 67 batters, while walking 22. Opponents had a .230 batting average against him — right-handed hitters hit .181.

He went 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in NSIC action.

For his collegiate career, he is 12-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 25 appearances for the Vikings. He has struck out 89 batters in 110 2/3 innings in his two seasons.

He is on the Alexandria amateur baseball team’s roster, but has not played this summer.

“It’s just pain in the elbow,” Gau said. “Ever since that day, it’s been hurting; it’ll feel good for a while and then I’ll shut a car door or something like that and it’ll act up.

“I’m just waiting now. It’s been really boring.

Brothers Chris, Cory Marek say being on the same team has ‘been a blast’

Sunday, brothers Chris and Cory Mark each hit a home run in the same inning

By: Luke Hagen, The Daily Republic

ALEXANDRIA — Brothers Chris and Cory Marek have excelled separately for much of their baseball careers.

Growing up, they each played for the Mitchell high school and Legion teams. But they were never on the same team at the same time.

They also went on to play collegiately at Dakota Wesleyan, but both played for the Tigers during different years.

“We were always apart because there’s five years between us,” Chris Marek, 28, said.

Although they’ve followed much of the same baseball paths, their first time playing on the same team wasn’t until six years ago, when they joined Salem’s amateur baseball team.

Thursday night, the two suited up for Alexandria — the new amateur team they joined and helped form at the beginning of the season — in a Sunshine League game against the Mitchell Mad Dogs. Chris started the game on the mound, while Cory was at shortstop. But by the top of the fourth inning, Cory geared up, and was behind the plate doing the catching for his older brother.

“It’s relaxing time with your brother,” Cory Marek, 23, said. “Playing with your brother, in your favorite sport, it’s one of a kind.”

Sunday, in a game against Platte held in Alexandria, Chris started on the mound and Cory caught, but it was an offensive oddity that occurred for the first time in their careers together.

For the second time this season, they each hit home runs in the same game, but it was the first time they each hit a long ball in the same inning. Cory hit a two-run homer in the second at-bat of the bottom of the first, and Chris hit a three-run shot three batters later. The early runs led to a 15-5, 7-inning victory.

“We made a few jokes that the older brother always has to do better than the younger brother,” said Cory, whose only hit against Platte was the homer, while Chris added an RBI double to go with his long ball. “He hit the bomb a lot further than I did, so he just had to show me up.”

Before playing with Alexandria, the pair joined Salem’s amateur team in 2006. They played four years with the Salem Cubs before helping start Alexandria’s amateur team at the beginning of the year.

The Marek helped the Alexandria Angels moved to 7-1 in Sunshine League action after defeating the Mad Dogs 7-2 Thursday night. Alexandria is 8-2 overall.

Chris and Cory each had two hits in the win. Chris pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters.

“Since we started, it’s been a blast,” said Cory Marek, who was an All-American honorable mention selection for Dakota Wesleyan in 2005. “The guys on the team are fun to play baseball with and are competitive. It’s been a good time.”

Although they are not Mitchell natives, Chris Marek said they call the town home. They were both born in Rapid City, but moved to Mitchell when Chris was 13 and Cory was 8.

Chris joined Dakota Wesleyan in 2001 and played both catcher and infield. Cory joined in 2006, the year after Chris graduated, and had stints as pitcher and as an infielder.

That same year, the brothers joined together for the first time to start a run of years playing on the same team that hasn’t stopped.

“Growing up, being the big brother, I always tried to tell (Cory) or teach him how to do things,” Chris Marek said, “and once you get to amateur ball, it’s more of a friendship and camaraderie of playing and having fun together, rather than being the mentor or role model.”

Alexandria tops Mitchell Mad Dogs 7-2

ALEXANDRIA — The Alexandria amateur baseball team defeated the Mitchell Mad Dogs 7-2 Thursday in Sunshine League action.
