PROFILE
Kirk "Sorney" Sorensen is a 1970 graduate of Vermillion High School. Sorney's amateur career began in 1970 when he joined the Vermillion Red Sox after the completion of his high school Legion baseball season. Sorney mostly played catcher, but eventually moved to first base. Sorney was a powerful hitter and to this date holds a hitting record at the South Dakota Amateur baseball tournament (1997 - 6 hits in one game). Sorney continued to play baseball for the Red Sox until 1979 when he became a player/coach. He coached the Red Sox until 1980, but continued to play first base for the Red Sox. In 1987, Sorney again coached the Red Sox for a one-year stint. In 1988, he became a State Baseball Commissioner, a role he continues today. In 1990, Sorney again became the coach of the Red Sox and has continued as manager to the present date. After 33 years with the Red Sox, in 2003, he won his first Class "B" State Baseball Championship. As a further highlight to this accomplishing amateur baseball career, his Red Sox repeated in 2004 as the Class "B" State Baseball Champions. While Sorney mostly manages the Red Sox today, each season he still manages to obtain a few at-bats and a few innings patrolling right field at Prentis Park. Sorney was a member of the 2006 Class A State Champion Vermillion Red Sox. In 2009, Sorney will be playing his 39th season with the Red Sox.
