VERMILLION — Local wrestlers punched their final tickets to the Class A State Meet in the Region 2A wrestling tournament on Friday night in Vermillion.

Championship and consolation bouts topped off the evening, but first it was the consolation semifinal matches to decide which athletes would move on to state and which would see their season come to a close.

Yankton’s Spencer Huber, ranked ninth in Class A at 106 pounds, defeated Conner Rowbotham of Brandon Valley in the 106-pound consolation semifinal to start off the evening by virtue of a 7-0 decision to clinch a state meet berth. Huber later claimed third place by defeating Matthew Mazourek of Lennox by a tight 7-4 decision.

Carter Kratz of Vermillion won third place at 120 pounds with a 7-0 decision over Tea Area’s Trayce Ruotsalianen. Kratz’s teammate Brett Bye won the 132-pound title with a major decision victory over Washinton’s Dylan Larson. “Kratz had a great region tourney and Bye wrestled a tough championship match,” Vermillion head coach Kyle Seibel said.

Even those athletes not wrestling for championship matches on Friday still had reason to be excited. “For our kids moving on to state, it is the culmination of hard work all year long, including the summer,” Seibel said. “They’ve earned the right to go to state and in my mind I see some of our kids finishing high on the podium because they’ve worked hard and went the extra mile; the results are not a fluke.”

Casey Skillingstad sealed the 132-pound third place match for the Bucks by pinning Lincoln’s Tyler Nordlund.

Vermillion’s Regan Bye fell in a 2-1 overtime decision in the 138-pound final.

The 145-pound championship match saw Brandon Valley’s Mason Bender defeat Logan Smith of Yankton by virtue of a 5-3 decision. Yankton’s Levi Davis won the 152-pound consolation match with a 14-7 decision. James Hisek added a Buck championship match victory at 160 pounds with a 4-3 decision over Washington’s Michael Buchman.

CJ Warren gave Yantkton yet another championship match victory when he pinned Alex Osborne of Vermillion in the 170-pound final.

“CJ and James both wrestled very smart, intense, physical style matches,” Yankton head coach Ryan Hage said. “I see a lot of good things headed into the state tournament; we’ll see what draws are on Sunday and go from there.

Thomas Kruse of Yankton was third at 195 pounds. Vermillion’s Will Mart used a 5-2 decision to claim third place at 285 pounds.

Washington claimed the team title with 209.5 points. Warrior head coach Marc Murren credited a strong effort on Thursday nigh with the victory. “We had some big upsets yesterday,” Murren said. “We had kids win matches against kids who had already beaten them two or three times this year.”

Washington had two individual champions to lead them to victory. With the region title in hand, the Warriors now turn their focus to the state tourney. “We want to be in the top eight at state and medal as a team,” Murren said.

Sioux Falls Lincoln finished runner-up with 175 points while Brandon Valley was third. Vermillion and Yankton tied for fourth place with 141 points each.

Yankton only saw one wrestler’s season come to an end. Royce Reisner fell to Vermillion’s Will Mart at 285 pounds.

Kyle Seibel (106), Brandon Hertz (152) and Seth Heine (220) all lost their consolation semifinal bouts and are now done for the season.

Dakota Valley saw Tripp Shuey’s (113) and Tyler Schrunk’s (120) seasons come to an end.

Washington’s coach Murren was named Region 2A coach of the year.

The South Dakota Class A Wrestling Tournament will be held Feb. 24-25 in Aberdeen.
