Posted Jan 19/14 - Vandemosselaer Backstops Riels to Victory

Riels 3 vs Hawks 2  January 17, 2014

FIRST PERIOD

Hawks scored early when Alex McLean beat Riels goalie Kyle Vandemosselaer high on the left side to take a 1-0 lead at 1:25 of the 1st period with assists coming from Yeroschak and McDonald.

Then at 8:27 Brett Charette took the puck across the Hawks line weaving in and out through 2 defenders and having extreme patience on a beautiful goal, his 20th of the season to tie it at 1-1 with an assist to Travis Ziprick.  Shots on goal were 13-12 Riels.

SECOND PERIOD

Riels came out flying in the second outshooting the Hawks 1-8 in the second.  Riels had 2 power play chances in the second but couldn’t put one past Fleury.  Until at the 12:13 mark, Russian star forward Stanislav Izvekov blasted a puck his 6th of the season past Fleury giving the Riels a 2-1 lead with assists from Mike Riffel and Skyler Eastman.  Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer had only 20 shots on him to this point, but came up big on times where the Hawks could of made it a difference.  Riels lead was 2-1 after two periods outshooting the Hawks 30-20 after two periods.

THIRD PERIOD

The Riels specialty team tonight did not fair too well as they had 3 more power play chances in the third but did not score.  Too much passing, not enough shooting.  Therefore, the Hawks kept it close until the 10:08 mark when the Belarus star Artur Raevskiy potted his 6th of the season beating Fleury with assists coming from Brock Bram and Chris Prejet.  Riels took full control at this point leading 3-1 until late in the third with 8 seconds left on a goal mound scramble as the Hawks scored to make it 3-2.  Hawks Mike Lorange scored his 21st of the season form Desmond.  They outshot the Riels in the third 16-8.  Overall the Riels out shot the Hawks 38-36.

Riels performance tonight was good hard work with the top line being Artur Raevskiy, Skyler Eastman and Chris Prejet.  They easily could of scored 4-5 goals tonight with their hard work winning all the battles all over the ice.

The number one star tonight went to Riels veteran goalie Kyle Vandemosselaer who was super stopping 34 of the 26 shots.  He kept the Riels in certain situations at par making a couple of beautiful glove saves and stopping a breakaway and overall being very focused throughout.  “Great game Kyle.”
