Announcing 2014 Salem Senators Baseball

The Salem Senators are a single “A” baseball team sponsored by Salem American Legion Post 136.  The Senators are proud to announce an all new management and coaching staff:  James Mensing manager-coach and Lane Biggs coach-manager.

2014 Salem Senators Mission Statement:  The Senators are a developmental baseball team seeking quality players interested in playing a high level of amateur baseball.  Our focus is to develop players who will go on to play “AAA” legion ball with Post 136 Withnell Dodgers or Post 58 Canyon Crushers.

What Makes a Win?  There are no other  legion “A” teams in the Willamette Valley.  Therefore, many of our games will be against older more experienced teams.  We won’t always win based on the score. It is important that we gauge our wins not just on the score at the end of the game, but if we played our best game for personal development of skills and character.  If you share this philosophy, this will be an excellent opportunity to play quality summer baseball.

Play-Time:  Play- time is not guaranteed, but the coaching staff will make every effort to give players many opportunities to develop their skills.  In games where a win is essential to advance, coaches will play those players deemed most likely to carry the team to a victory on that day against that particular competition. All roster and play-time decisions will be made by staff only.

Cost:  The player fee for the Salem Senators 2014 summer season is $500.  Be aware that this is not a sufficient amount of money to carry the team to state or regional play-offs if we should qualify in our “A” division.  We estimate that players would need to contribute an additional $200 in July if we qualify for the state tournament.  The Oregon “A” champions qualify for a regional tournament in Anchorage, Alaska in August.  If we have this opportunity, players will need additional funds.  If you or your employer are in a position to sponsor a player, please contact James or Lane.

TryoutsTryouts for both the “AAA” Withnell Dodgers and the “A” Salem Senators are Tuesday and Wednesday, May 27 and 28 at 4:00 at the Willamette University baseball field inside the football stadium.  On the 27th, players should arrive as close to 3:00 as possible to allow time to fill out paperwork. The $500 fee is due on the first day of try-outs, and will be fully refunded if a player fails to make the team.
