Posted Apr 12/10 - Record-setting day leads CU track and field at Cumberlands
Personal records and school records decorated Campbellsville University's results Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands track and field meet. Campbellsville finished fifth in the 11-team field with 81 points, 3.5 points behind Union College and 15.5 behind Cumberlands.

The Tigers took 13 points in the first event they competed in, the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Qualaun Reed beat out Jarrod Wilder of Berea College by two-tenths of a second to win his first steeplechase at CU with a time of 9:54.11.

The win, along with seventh- and eighth-place finishes by Armando Pina and Dashan Craft, put CU in second place by Berry College after two events.

"Que is a great finisher. He's got good speed, and he puts himself in position to make it a foot race to the finish line," CU track coach Joe Stockton said.

Reed went on to help the Tigers set records in the 4x800 relay with a second-place time of 8:13.57 and in the 4x400 relay with a first-place time of 3:28.38.

In the 4x800, Reed teamed up with Geovanni Popca, Craft and Tyler Nilsen to beat the school record by 19 seconds. In the 4x400, he was joined by Kenneth Johnson, Matt Oliver and Darren Long to edge the CU record by two seconds. CU was also sixth in the 4x100 relay with a time of :44.61.

Dale Kerr, a freshman from Orlando, Fla., trumped two school records in the field to help steal the show. Kerr became the first Tiger to throw a discuss more than 40 meters two weeks ago. Saturday, he topped his school record with a first-place throw of 41.8 meters. He also went on to win the javelin competition in his first time to compete in the event collegiality, beating the school record by two feet with a winning throw of 46.1 meters or 151 feet, 3 inches.

"I actually saw that winning throw, and believe me, it was jaw dropping," Stockton said.

Kerr also finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 13.31 meters.

Other personal records went to hurdlers Walker Church and Detrick Briggs.

Briggs finished seventh in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:01.54, while Church set a PR of 1:01.97 with a ninth-place finish in the event. Church, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, also set a personal record with a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of :17.30.

"Walker did a great job of attacking the hurdles this week, and the times showed it," Stockton said.

Other Tigers to place at the event were Popoca in the 5,000-meter run (4th, 15:45.53), Briggs in the long jump (5th, 6.19m) and Long in the triple jump (5th, 12.41m).

Campbellsville has one meet remaining before the Mid-South Conference Championships. The Tigers travel to Richmond, Ky., Friday for the Eastern Kentucky University Open, beginning at 3 p.m. The MSC Championships are March 23-24 in Rio Grande, Ohio.
