It was a Payne-full day for the squad from New Prague. St. Benedict pitcher Drew Payne shut them down for 8 innings. Oriole starter Dan Novak on the other hand had trouble keeping the Saints off the bases and from circling them. The Saints scored 5 runs off of Novak before he was pulled in the bottom of the fourth inning, unable to get the third out. Oriole righty Ross Skluzacek came in to put the fire out, he gave up one run over the last 4 and a third innings to keep the Orioles in the game. The orange and black had trouble mustering anything in the later innings, even though Keith Rynda kept prodding them to get something going. The O's never gave up and in the 9th inning the hits started to drop. Big Dust Steinhoff led off with a single, he was pinch ran for by the speedy Brian Pumper. Dan Novak drilled a triple into right field scoring Pumper and finally putting the O's on the board. Aaron Shetka singled in Novak, and that was followed by a hit from Ted Nytes. Dan Shetak would reach on an error with one out, scoring a run, this was follwed by the second out. Dan Meger would reach on a hit and the O's had something going. They were down by 3 with the bases loaded and two outs. Steve Olson stepped to the plate. If anybody was going to drive one out it would be Ole, but alas,somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in New Prague -- mighty Steve grounded out.
