Posted Feb 11/14 - Friday Night Tykes

The Esquire Network show Friday Night Tykes takes the audience on a journey through the TYFA youth football league if you have yet to watch this show take a moment when you have nothing else on the agenda to do so I'm not going to judge the show that's for you to decide if you should watch a segment, I will discuss my observation's first using my experience as a TV broadcaster and then as a coach .

First of all any semi for real show will need conflict this show has that element here are just a few things noticed in the three shows I watched on 1-7-2014 a coach leading his team of nine year olds through a chant of F##K the opposing team while parent's sat on the side watching before practice, another coach telling his team to ear hole helmet shot an opposing teams players if they were standing around a pile and of course the one parent leading taunting yells at the other team that's always a main stay for any youth football game.

Another segment had the coach telling his team the opposing team would spit, curse, take dirty shots on them now remember these are nine year old kids so intimidation isn't that hard to project, here is an example of costing yourself the game before it's played because as they aired the game you guessed it this coaches kids were quitting some didn't even need any contact they were checking out of the game any way they could get off the field.

These are a mixer of observation but now let's move into coaching one coach gave his team no opportunity to be in the game when at halftime he was giving his pep talk on how good they had been trailing 13-0 at half he made no adjustments and well you already know what happen they were blown out in second half I have seen this even at the high school level so this isn't just a youth football thing, another coach wondered why the plays he ran at the 7 year old level were not working as they had just a season before, the first answer would be of course the kids are a little faster and if you have almost no team speed you should play power football with limited outside play coaching 101.

These final two observations are right out of very bad coaching x book on how to coach the first one (You should use your god given right to rip their heads off and make them bleed) this is a pre game pep talk I have seen this speech given in person a few times it leaves young players preplexed as to what is sportsmanship, this last one I have lived through in high school this coach on the show wanted to discipline his team when he caught two of his players playing around on the sideline of what was a blowout game he gathered them after the clock ran out and he then preceeded to run them mind you they had just finished a game my old high school junior varsity coach ran my junior varsity team after every game and at halftime we would run 40 yard dashes our record that season 5-5 by season end over a third of the team had walked away to wait for varsity football and in those games we had no energy in the second half of games and by season end the injury bug had also took out most of that team, to watch this tactic being used here in 2014 well no coach should be allowed to get away with it and to show this doesn't workout well for coaches still using such a tactic my high school coach took this to another school and the parents went before the athletic director and had him fired today he is a ref.and works high school games .

The show while interesting and somewhat don't watch TV it is also giving an inside look at where youth football of old still is, today's football is yes still mental and yes some of the kids get treatment not too far off the mark of those coaches on this show but to continue to in some way a level of abuse. I know such a strong word there are better ways of communicating and far better ways of giving players at this age a better way of growing to become heathly people in more ways than physically this comes back full circle again understanding the show wants ratings and if it should make a second season there just may be more balance they did show some of those type of moment's on the show but does the show really air anything that is not going on weekly in youth football the answer is no it offers the viewer an inside look at what many coaches and players of youth football encounter.
