Posted Apr 22/14 - Knights Season Preview

The Lexington Knights baseball team has been a mainstay in Lexington since 2009, but this 2014 version brings a new look to the LABL. The team came into the spring as the most unknown of the four teams in the new league, making them a bit of an underdog.   Even as this report hits the press, they still have some unknowns themselves because a group of college ball players will be joining the team once their college tournaments are over.  There are whispers of them lacking athleticism and pitching depth. While there is some truth to those rumors, this team is gritty, features solid hitting and a few arms with potential.  Assistant manager and pitching coach, Matt Roberts commented, "This team just doesn't care about the score, they keep fighting and have fun doing it." They finished the spring losing just one of four preseason games and showed they will be competing for wins on a game to game basis.

The team motto going into the season is "OBP".   With few power bats in the line-up the Knights will have to lean on stringing hits together and working it on the base paths. The Knights will have a very foreign feel when it comes to offensive with Tennessee defector Jesse Lane and from the way north Matt Youngquist.  IF there is any power to be had from this ball club it will be from the slick fielding Duke Gastos or the crafty veteran Wes Drinkard.  The Knights will also rely on the many of the other new ballplayers on this club.  Don’t be surprised if you see Luis Gonzalez, Lowell Douglass, or Mike Speck bringing the lumber to the yard.

Defensively there is a lot for the Knights to work on this year but there are a few players that will have to patrol in-between the lines.  Joey Drinkard and J.R Heiner will patrol the outfield and both can step in behind the plate at a moment’s notice.  Clinton Riddle will be digging out bad throws all year at first base and will be counted on to hurl from the mound.

Speaking of pitching, other clubs are whispering that the Knights have none.   Brother tandem Matt and Mike Roberts plan on doing some whispering of their own this season…with other teams bats…Oh snap. “But for reals,” Mike said,” I’m gonna get people out.”  The Knights pitching staff is going to grind it out this season; put best by Duke, “these guys play tough and rarely give up.”

The Knights will have some ups and downs this year but it will sure be a good time.  Thanks for supporting local amateur baseball.
